ABSTRACT

The production of ceramics from uranium coordination compounds can be achieved through thermal processing if an excess amount of the desired atoms (i.e., C or N), or reactive gaseous products (e.g., methane or nitrogen oxide) is made available to the reactive uranium metal core via decomposition/fragmentation of the surrounding ligand groups. Here, computational thermodynamic approaches were utilized to identify the temperatures necessary to produce uranium metal from some starting compounds─UI4(TMEDA)2, UCl4(TMEDA)2, UCl3(pyridine)x, and UI3(pyridine)4. Experimentally, precursors were irradiated by a laser under various gaseous environments (argon, nitrogen, and methane) creating extreme reaction conditions (i.e., fast heating, high temperature profile >2000 °C, and rapid cooling). Despite the fast dynamics associated with laser irradiation, the central uranium atom reacted with the thermal decomposition products of the ligands yielding uranium ceramics. Residual gas analysis identified vaporized products from the laser irradiation, and the final ceramic products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. The composition of the uranium precursor as well as the gaseous environment had a direct impact on the production of the final phases.

ABSTRACT

Details of the carbothermic reduction/nitridation to synthesize hafnium nitride (HfN) and hafnium carbide (HfC) are scarce in the literature. Therefore, this current study was carried out to evaluate two pathways for synthesizing these two refractory materials: direct nitridation and carbothermic reduction/nitridation. Two mixtures of hafnium dioxide and carbon with C/HfO2 molar ratios of 2.15 and 3.1 were nitridized directly using flowing nitrogen gas at elevated temperatures (1300-1700 °C). The 3.1 C/HfO2 molar ratio mixture was also carbothermically reduced under flowing argon gas to synthesize HfC, which was converted into HfN by introducing a nitridation step under both N2(g) and N2(g)-10% H2(g). X-ray diffraction results showed the formation of HfN at 1300 and 1400 °C and HfC1-yNy at ≥1400 °C under direct nitridation of samples using a C/HfO2 molar ratio of 2.15. These phase analysis data together with lower lattice strain and greater crystallite sizes of HfC1-yNy that formed at higher temperatures suggested that the HfC1-yNy phase is preferred over HfN at those temperatures. Carbothermic reduction of 3.1 C/HfO2 molar ratio samples under an inert atmosphere produced single-phased HfC with no significant levels of dissolved oxygen. Carbothermic reduction nitridation made two phases of different carbon levels (HfC1-yNy and HfC1-y'Ny', where y' < y), while direct nitridation produced a single HfC1-yNy phase under both N2 and N2-10% H2 cover gas environments.

ABSTRACT

UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 was subjected to laser-based heating─a method that enables localized, fast heating (T > 2000 °C) and rapid cooling under controlled conditions (scan rate, power, atmosphere, etc.)─to understand its thermal decomposition. A predictive computational thermodynamic technique estimated the decomposition temperature of UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 to uranium (U) metal to be 2236 °C, a temperature achievable under laser irradiation. Dictated by the presence of reactive, gaseous byproducts, the thermal decomposition of UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 under furnace conditions up to 600 °C revealed the formation of UO2, UIx, and U(C1-xOx)y, while under laser irradiation, UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 decomposed to UO2, U(C1-xOx)y, UC2-zOz, and UC. Despite the fast dynamics associated with laser irradiation, the central uranium atom reacted with the thermal decomposition products of the ligand (1,4-dioxane = C4H8O2) instead of producing pure U metal. The results highlight the potential to co-develop uranium precursors with specific irradiation procedures to advance nuclear materials research by finding new pathways to produce uranium carbide.

ABSTRACT

Doxorubicin (DOX) is known to cause cognitive impairments in patients submitted to long-term chemotherapy (deficits also known as chemobrain). Therefore, there is an urgent need for therapeutic strategies capable of returning cancer survivors back to their previous quality of life. The present study investigated whether resveratrol (RSV) or curcumin (CUR) administration could affect mnemonic function and brain morphological changes following DOX administration in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: DOX group (2.5 mg/kg/week for 4 weeks, i.p., plus distilled water for 28 days, oral gavage - OG), DOX + RSV group (DOX, 2.5 mg/kg/week for 4 weeks, i.p., plus RSV, 10 mg/kg/day for 28 days, OG), DOX + CUR group (DOX, 2.5 mg/kg/week for 4 weeks, i.p., plus CUR, 100 mg/kg/day for 28 days, OG) and control (CTR) group (0.9% saline solution weekly for 4 weeks, i.p., plus distilled water for 28 days, OG). Behavioral analyses (open field - OF - and the novel object recognition test - NORT) were performed. Brains were collected and analyzed by hematoxylin-eosin and luxol fast blue staining techniques and by immunohistochemistry for GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein) expression in astrocytes and Iba1 (ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1) expression in microglia. DOX-injected rats presented short-term and long-term memory impairments as seen in the NORT at 3 and 24 h after habituation and increased GFAP and Iba1 expression, respectively, in astrocytes and microglia of the frontal cortex, hypothalamus and hippocampus. Such cognitive deficits were prevented by CUR at both periods and by RSV at 24 h. DOX-induced astrogliosis and microgliosis were avoided by RSV and CUR. No signs of demyelination or neuronal loss were found in any group. Thus, CUR and RSV prevented memory loss, astrogliosis and microgliosis induced by DOX monotherapy.

ABSTRACT

This work presents the results for identification of chemical phases obtained by several laboratories as a part of an international nuclear forensic round-robin exercise. In this work powder X-ray diffraction (p-XRD) is regarded as the reference technique. Neutron diffraction produced a superior high-angle diffraction pattern relative to p-XRD. Requiring only small amounts of sample, µ-Raman spectroscopy was used for the first time in this context as a potentially complementary technique to p-XRD. The chemical phases were identified as pure UO2 in two materials, and as a mixture of UO2, U3O8 and an intermediate species U3O7 in the third material.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The coverage for acupuncture for chronic lower back or knee pain by the statutory health insurance was introduced in 2007. The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics of patients and providers of acupuncture and temporal and regional trends in the utilization of acupuncture. METHODS: This retrospective observational study used anonymized statutory health insurance claims data from a sample of roughly four million subjects. The sample is representative of the German population regarding age and gender in 2013. RESULTS: Lower back pain was the most common coded indication (86%) for billing acupuncture. Women were more often treated with acupuncture than men; the mean age was 61.1 years. For 63% acupuncture was billed in 2014 for the first time, 37% already had an acupuncture treatment in 2012 or 2013. Premature termination (<6 sessions) was observed in 14% of all insurants receiving acupuncture for the first time in 2014 for knee pain and in 21% of those with back pain. Overall there was a statistically significant decrease in the utilization of acupuncture from 2008 to 2015. Regional differences between East and West Germany and city states were observed. Half of all acupuncture treatments in 2014 were provided by 11% of all physicians who billed acupuncture at least once. DISCUSSION: Higher utilization of acupuncture by women reflects the epidemiology of back and knee pain and their preference for alternative complementary medicine. On the one hand, the large proportion of patients treated repeatedly with acupuncture suggests perceived benefits. On the other hand, provision of acupuncture services is decreasing continuously and a relevant proportion of subjects are terminating treatment prematurely.

ABSTRACT

Recent expeditions have revealed high levels of biodiversity in the tropical deep-sea, yet little is known about the age or origin of this biodiversity, and large-scale molecular studies are still few in number. In this study, we had access to the largest number of solariellid gastropods ever collected for molecular studies, including many rare and unusual taxa. We used a Bayesian chronogram of these deep-sea gastropods (1) to test the hypothesis that deep-water communities arose onshore, (2) to determine whether Antarctica acted as a source of diversity for deep-water communities elsewhere and (3) to determine how factors like global climate change have affected evolution on the continental slope. We show that although fossil data suggest that solariellid gastropods likely arose in a shallow, tropical environment, interpretation of the molecular data is equivocal with respect to the origin of the group. On the other hand, the molecular data clearly show that Antarctic species sampled represent a recent invasion, rather than a relictual ancestral lineage. We also show that an abrupt period of global warming during the Palaeocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) leaves no molecular record of change in diversification rate in solariellids and that the group radiated before the PETM. Conversely, there is a substantial, although not significant increase in the rate of diversification of a major clade approximately 33.7 Mya, coinciding with a period of global cooling at the Eocene-Oligocene transition. Increased nutrients made available by contemporaneous changes to erosion, ocean circulation, tectonic events and upwelling may explain increased diversification, suggesting that food availability may have been a factor limiting exploitation of deep-sea habitats. Tectonic events that shaped diversification in reef-associated taxa and deep-water squat lobsters in central Indo-West Pacific were also probably important in the evolution of solariellids during the Oligo-Miocene.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to use plainfin midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus) as a general model to explore how fishes localize an underwater sound source in the relatively simple geometry of a monopole sound field. The robust phonotaxic responses displayed by gravid females toward a monopole sound projector (J-9) broadcasting a low-frequency (90 Hz) tone similar to the fundamental frequency of the male's advertisement call were examined. The projector's sound field was mapped at 5 cm resolution azimuth using an eight-hydrophone array. Acoustic pressure was measured with the array and acoustic particle motion was calculated from pressure gradients between hydrophones. The response pathways of the fish were analyzed from video recordings and compared to the sound field. Gravid females at initial release were directed toward the sound source, and the majority (73%) swam to the playback projector with straight to slightly curved tracks in the direction of the source and in line with local particle motion vectors. In contrast, the initial direction of the control (sound-off) group did not differ from random. This paper reports on a comparison of fish localization behavior with directional cues available in the form of local particle motion vectors.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyse whether substitution of phenylalanine in position 124 of the human (h) 5-HT1B receptor by cysteine, a naturally occurring variant of this receptor, modifies not only ligand binding, but also G-protein coupling and second messenger formation. Stably transfected rat C6 glioma cells, which express either the h5-HT1B variant receptor (VR) or the wild-type receptor (WTR) were used. In saturation experiments with [3H]5-carboxamidotryptamine ([3H]5-CT), the maximum binding (Bmax) of the VR amounted to only 60% of that to WTR. In competition experiments with 1 nM [3H]5-CT, the following 5-HT receptor ligands exhibited a higher affinity for the mutant receptor than for the WTR: L-694,247, 5-CT, 5-HT, sumatriptan (agonists listed at decreasing order of potency) and SB-224289 (a selective h5-HT1B receptor inverse agonist with competitive antagonistic properties). In contrast, the mixed 5-HT1B/1D receptor antagonist GR-127935 exhibited equal affinity for both isoforms. The efficacy of L-694,247, 5-CT, 5-HT and sumatriptan in stimulating [35S]GTPgammaS binding (a measure of G protein coupling) to membranes of cells expressing the VR was approximately 50-65% lower compared to membranes of cells expressing the WTR, but their potency was 2.8-3.6-fold higher. SB-224289, which decreased [35S]GTPgammaS binding when given alone, but not GR-127935, was more potent in antagonizing the stimulatory effect of 5-CT on [35S]GTPgammaS binding to membranes expressing the VR compared to membranes expressing the WTR. In whole cells expressing the VR, 5-CT and sumatriptan inhibited the forskolin-stimulated cAMP accumulation 3.2-fold more potently than in cells expressing the WTR. In conclusion, our data suggest that the Phe-124-Cys mutation modifies the pharmacological properties of the h5-HT1B receptor and may account for pharmacogenetic differences in the action of h5-HT1B receptor ligands. Thus, the sumatriptan-induced vasospasm which occurs at low incidence as a side-effect in migraine therapy may be related to the expression of the (124-Cys)h5-HT1B receptor in patients with additional pathogenetic factors such as coronary heart disease.

ABSTRACT

A whole-genome radiation hybrid (RH) panel was used to construct a high-resolution map of the rat genome based on microsatellite and gene markers. These include 3,019 new microsatellite markers described here for the first time and 1,714 microsatellite markers with known genetic locations, allowing comparison and integration of maps from different sources. A robust RH framework map containing 1,030 positions ordered with odds of at least 1,000:1 has been defined as a tool for mapping these markers, and for future RH mapping in the rat. More than 500 genes which have been mapped in mouse and/or human were localized with respect to the rat RH framework, allowing the construction of detailed rat-mouse and rat-human comparative maps and illustrating the power of the RH approach for comparative mapping.

ABSTRACT

Amoscanate is a highly effective antischistosomal agent when administered as a 5% absorbable aqueous suspension. This preparation produces lesions in the brains of young adult rats given extremely high oral doses. Lesions are confined to areas adjacent to the lateral ventricles and are dominated by necrosis of the neuropil of the medial striatum, with relative sparing of bundles of myelinated fibers in the necrotic zone. There is a striking accumulation of calcium-containing microgranules in these areas. The ependyma survives on the ventricular wall overlying the necrotic zone, but pyknosis and increased extracellular space are apparent among ependymal and subependymal cells in the region. Occasionally, fibers of the fornix are focally damaged in immediate proximity to the lateral ventricle; the corpus callosum is rarefied, and microhemorrhages also occur. It is hypothesized that high concentration of the toxic agent in ventricular cerebrospinal fluid plays an important role in pathogenesis. The neuropil of the medial striatum is selectively vulnerable.

ABSTRACT

Duane's retraction syndrome (DRS) is a congenital eye movement disorder characterized by adduction deficiency, abduction limitation, globe retraction, and palpebral fissure narrowing on attempted adduction. In a case of unilateral DRS, the right side of the brainstem, cavernous sinus, and orbit were completely normal. The left abducens nucleus contained no cell bodies from motor neurons, but in its rostral portion, it contained several small cell bodies believed to be compatible with internuclear neurons. The left abducens nerve was absent. The left lateral rectus muscle was partially innervated by branches from the inferior oculomotor nerve.
