ABSTRACT

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors of ankle instability by using Cumberland ankle instability tool (CAIT), which have been frequently used as ankle instability tools. The participants were divided into the normal ankle group and the instability ankle group. Maximum strength, proprioception, dynamic balance and maximum rage of joint motion were compared in order to find out factors of instability in the questionnaires. [Participants and Methods] A total of 44 participants were classified into the control (CON) group and the chronic ankle instability (CAI) group according to questionnaire types. Muscle strength, proprioception, dynamic balance and maximum joint angle were measured. The independent t-test was used. [Results] In the case of maximum ankle strength, it showed significance in CON group and CAI group ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. In proprioception, it showed significance in CON group and CAI group. In dynamic balance, it showed significance in anterior (ANT) direction of the CON group and CAI group. Maximum joint angle produced significance in dorsiflexion of CON group and CAI group. [Conclusion] Information on maximum strength, proprioception, dynamic balance of anterior direction, and maximum joint angle of dorsiflexion is available through questionnaire CAIT.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] This study assessed the exercise capacity of healthy adults while performing the inline lunge exercise by using Functional Movement Screen (FMS). Compared the difference in muscle activity of the quadriceps according to the exercise capacity. [Participants and Methods] Thirty two healthy participants (12 males, 20 females) participated in this study. The surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to measure the electrical activities for the vastus medialis (VM), rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL) of quadriceps. [Results] Both groups had significant difference when sitting up and getting up during the inline lunge. In scores 3 group, vastus medialis showed higher muscle activity than vastus lateralis. On contrary, in scores 2 group, vastus lateralis had higher muscle activity than vastus medialis. [Conclusion] Therefore, this study suggests that inline lunge can help to strengthen the quadriceps effectively by showing the difference of quadriceps activity according to exercise capacity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of this study was to identify the effects of physical therapy modalities and exercise therapy on myofascial pain syndrome by assessing the degree of effect size (ES) and related variables. METHODS: Related studies published between 1st January 2008 and 31st December 2019were retrieved from national [KCI, RISS, National Assembly Library and DBpia (n = 405)] and international [PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar and Cochrane library (n = 1,600)] databases. According to the selection criteria, 25 studies were selected for review. RESULTS: The degree of ES in the physical therapy and exercise therapy combined group (1.83) showed the largest mean ES. The size of the effect according to the number of people to be treated was 41 or more (1.64), and showed the largest mean ES. The size of the effect according to treatment period was 16 to 30 days (1.41). The size of the effect for 6 to 10 treatments (1.51) showed the largest mean ES. Trim and fill results showed that the calibration ES was 0.67. CONCLUSION: Physical therapy modalities and exercise therapy had a great effect on myofascial pain syndrome in the neck and shoulders, and the effect differed according to the methods of intervention, and the methods of evaluation.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] The objective of this study is to identify the influence of ocarina practices on the lung function of a group of healthy female ocarina players aged 40 and above in comparison to an age-matched group of females with no experience with ocarina playing. [Participants and Methods] Spirometry measurement has been conducted on both groups of 35 healthy females aged 40 and above, one with regular participation in ocarina practices (experimental group) and the other without (control group). [Results] FEV1 and FEV1/FVC values of those in the experiment group who practiced ocarina on a regular basis turned out to be significantly higher than the control group, and there was no significant difference on FVC. [Conclusion] This study indicates that ocarina practices on a regular basis helps middle-aged females improve their lung functions particularly in FEV1 and FEV1/FVC.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] There have been many study ipsilateral erector spinae in regard of prone hip extension (PHE). However, mediating methods have been focusing on the reinforcement of gluteus. Hereupon, this study is intended to identify how an increase of gluteus maximus influences on posterior oblique sling (POS) and suggest a mediating method to effectively reinforce them. This study shows the seclective POS strength exercise. [Participants and Methods] This study has been conducted on normal male (13) and female (13), and participants were asked to proceed PHE exercise and prone hip extension with hip abduction with knee flexion (PHEAKF). Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the contralateral latissimus dorsi, contralateral erector spinae, ipsilateral erector spinae, ipsilateral gluteus maximus, and ipsilateral biceps femoris. A paried t-test was used to compare muscle activity POS. [Results] EMG activity of the contralateral latissimus dorsi, ipsilateral erector spinae, and ipsilateral gluteus maximus was significantly greater performed PHEAKF than PHE. As for ipsilateral biceps femoris, muscle activation was lower in PHEAKF than PHE. [Conclusions] According to the results of this study, increase in muscular activation from the direction of muscular fiber and posterior oblique sling seems to be an important factor that influencontralateral crector spinae on muscular activation of POS.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] Although much researches have been conducted on the hippotherapy, the intervention methods of the previous studies focus on the pelvis posture. Thus, this study analyzed the electromyogram (EMG) of trunk muscle and lower limb muscle to analyze the kinetic factors. Based on the analysis, this study aims to compare the muscle load and suggest effective exercise method. [Participants and Methods] This study checked the muscle activity of Rectus abdominis (RA), Erector spinae (ES), Rectus femoris (RF), Adductor magnus (AM) during the exercise using horse riding machine in dorsiflexion position by bending 20 degrees and in neutral position. Each position was performed for 5 minutes and the speed of the horse riding machine was set to medium speed. [Results] Rectus abdominis showed higher muscle activity in dorsiflexion position and the groups had significant differences. Elector spinae showed higher muscle activity in dorsiflexion position and the groups had significant differences. Rectus femoris showed higher muscle activity in dorsiflexion position and the groups had significant differences. Adductor magnus also showed higher muscle activity in dorsiflexion position and the groups had significant differences. [Conclusions] The study result showed that exercise with horse riding machine in dorsiflexion position activates trunk muscle and thigh muscle effectively. Thus, the study suggests more effective posture for the modern people who exercise with horse riding machine for strengthening physical health.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] The purposes of this study were to strengthen gluteus maximus and trunk muscles depending upon the hip joint direction by bridging exercise on an unstable and stable surface, and to suggest an intervention method for efficient and selective exercise. [Participants and Methods] The test measured the muscle activities with the external rotation and internal rotation of 25 degrees and hip joint neutral position of 0 degree on a stable and unstable surface each exercise 3 times for 9 seconds. [Results] External oblique abdominis showed a higher muscle activity on the unstable surface and internal rotation. Erector spinae showed no significant difference on the surfaces and demonstrated the highest muscle activity at the internal rotation. Gluteus maximus showed a higher muscle activity on the stable surface and external rotation and the interaction effect between the surface and the angle indicated a statistical significance as well. [Conclusion] Muscle activities appear different depending upon the change of surface and joint angle, and it can be said that the correct mobilization of muscle fiber relying on the muscle arrangement direction and muscle contraction direction is the most important factor for gluteus maximus.
