ABSTRACT

A facile reduction and doping process is employed with the supercritical ethanol drying method to form RuNi alloy aerogels. The optimized heterostructure comprising RuNi metal, RuO2, and NiO phases is synthesized through partial oxidation. When applied to the surface of Ni foam, the multiphase aerogels form a morphology of highly porous 0D colloidal aerogel networks on the surface. RuNi alloy-Ni foam oxidized at 350 °C (RuNi-350@NF) has an overpotential of 89 and 61 mV in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 media at 50 mA cm-2, as well as satisfactory long-term stability. Additionally, the Tafel slopes in alkaline and acidic media are found to be 34 and 30.9 mV dec-1, respectively. Furthermore, it exhibits long-term stability (35 h) in alkaline and acidic media at high current densities of 50 mA cm-2, respectively. This study presents a novel strategy for developing exceptionally efficient and free-standing 3D porous aerogel electrocatalysts with potential applications in hydrogen production.

ABSTRACT

To selectively target and treat murine melanoma B16BL6 tumors expressing αvß3 integrin receptors, we engineered tumor-specific functional extracellular vesicles (EVs) tailored for the targeted delivery of antitumor drugs. This objective was achieved through the incorporation of a pH-responsive adjuvant, cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic acid peptide (cRGD, serving as a tumor-targeting ligand), and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU, employed as a model antitumor drug). The pH-responsive adjuvant, essential for modulating drug release, was synthesized by chemically conjugating 3-(diethylamino)propylamine (DEAP) to deoxycholic acid (DOCA, a lipophilic substance capable of integrating into EVs' membranes), denoted as DEAP-DOCA. The DOCA, preactivated using N-(2-aminoethyl)maleimide (AEM), was chemically coupled with the thiol group of the cRGD-DOCA through the thiol-maleimide click reaction, resulting in the formation of cRGD-DOCA. Subsequently, DEAP-DOCA, cRGD-DOCA, and 5-FU were efficiently incorporated into EVs using a sonication method. The resulting tumor-targeting EVs, expressing cRGD ligands, demonstrated enhanced in vitro/in vivo cellular uptake specifically for B16BL6 tumors expressing αvß3 integrin receptors. The ionization characteristics of the DEAP in DEAP-DOCA induced destabilization of the EVs membrane at pH 6.5 through protonation of the DEAP substance, thereby expediting 5-FU release. Consequently, an improvement in the in vivo antitumor efficacy was observed for B16BL6 tumors. Based on these comprehensive in vitro/in vivo findings, we anticipate that this EV system holds substantial promise as an exceptionally effective platform for antitumor therapeutic delivery.

ABSTRACT

Silica aerogels and their derivatives have outstanding thermal properties with exceptional values in the thermal insulation industry. However, their brittle nature restricts their large-scale commercialization. Thus, enhancing their mechanical strength without affecting their thermal insulating properties is essential. Therefore, for the first time, highly thermally stable poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) partial sodium salt is used as a reinforcing polymer to synthesize hybrid P(AAm-CO-AAc)-silica aerogels via epoxy ring-opening polymerization in the present study. Functional groups in P(AAm-CO-AAc) partial sodium salts, such as CONH2 and COOH, acted as nucleophiles for the epoxy ring-opening reaction with (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane, which resulted in a seven-fold enhancement in mechanical strength compared to that of pristine silica aerogel while maintaining thermal conductivity at less than 30.6 mW/mK and porosity of more than 93.68%. Moreover, the hybrid P(AAm-CO-AAc)-silica aerogel demonstrated improved thermal stability up to 343 °C, owing to the synergetic effect between the P(AAm-CO-AAc) and the silica aerogel, corresponding to the thermal stability and strong covalent bonding among them. These excellent results illustrate that this new synthetic approach for producing hybrid P(AAm-CO-AAc)-silica aerogels is useful for enhancing the mechanical strength of pristine silica aerogel without impairing its thermal insulating property and shows potential as an industrial heat insulation material.

ABSTRACT

We previously proposed the Gut Microbiome Wellness Index (GMWI), a predictor of disease presence based on a gut microbiome taxonomic profile. As an application of this index for food science research, we applied GMWI as a quantitative tool for measuring the prebiotic effect of oligosaccharides. Mainly, in an in vitro anaerobic batch fermentation system, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), xylooligosaccharides (XOS), inulin (IN), and 2'-fucosyllactose (2FL), were mixed separately with fecal samples obtained from healthy adult volunteers. To find out how 24 h prebiotic fermentation influenced the GMWI values in their respective microbial communities, changes in species-level relative abundances were analyzed in the five prebiotics groups, as well as in two control groups (no substrate addition at 0 h and for 24 h). The GMWI of fecal microbiomes treated with any of the five prebiotics (IN (0.48 ± 0.06) > FOS (0.47 ± 0.03) > XOS (0.33 ± 0.02) > GOS (0.26 ± 0.02) > 2FL (0.16 ± 0.06)) were positive, which indicates an increase of relative abundances of microbial species previously found to be associated with a healthy, disease-free state. In contrast, the GMWI of samples without substrate addition for 24 h (-0.60 ± 0.05) reflected a non-healthy, disease-harboring microbiome state. Compared to the original prebiotic index (PI) and α-diversity metrics, GMWI provides a more data-driven, evidence-based indexing system for evaluating the prebiotic effect of food components. This study demonstrates how GMWI can be applied as a novel PI in dietary intervention studies, with wider implications for designing personalized diets based on their impact on gut microbiome wellness.

ABSTRACT

The data reported in this article contain eleven (6 female and 5 male) individual speaker's speech production patterns for the word-initial voiced and voiceless stops (/p,t/ and /b,d/) in American English. The production patterns are documented in the acoustic parameter: the Integrated Voicing Index (IVI) obtained from Voice Onset Time (VOT) and voicing duration in the stop closure (Voicing-in-Closure), in various prosodic contexts: lexically-stressed vs. unstressed; accented (focused) vs. unaccented (unfocused); phrase-initial vs. phrase-medial. The data also contain a CVS file with each speaker׳s mean values of the IVI, VOT and Voicing-in-Closure for each prosodic condition for the voiced and voiceless stops, along with the information about the speaker gender. ABSTRACT

This study demonstrates some new aspects of preboundary lengthening and preaccentual shortening on a test word banana in American English. Preboundary lengthening was found to be extended to the initial unstressed syllable beyond the main-stressed syllable, presenting more complexity than has previously been assumed. Preaccentual shortening was observed regardless of boundary strength or the stress pattern (trochaic vs iambic) of the following context word, suggesting that it operates globally at an utterance level. The locus of preaccentual shortening, however, was modulated by prosodic boundary: It is realized on the final vowel IP-finally but on the non-final stressed vowel IP-medially.
