ABSTRACT

Aim: This post-marketing surveillance study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of lenvatinib as first-line treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma in Korea.Materials & methods: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and other safety and effectiveness end points were assessed in patients who initiated lenvatinib according to the approved label in republic of Korea.Results: Among 658 lenvatinib-treated patients, ADRs were reported in 57.8%; ADRs grade ≥3 in 13.5%. The most common grade ≥3 ADRs were asthenia (1.2%) and hepatic encephalopathy (1.2%). Physician-reported tumor responses (n = 511) were complete (1.0%) or partial (12.9%) response and stable (45.2%) or progressive disease (40.9%); objective response rates were higher with longer lenvatinib treatment duration (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Lenvatinib was generally well tolerated and effective in real-world clinical practice in Korea.Clinical trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05225207.

ABSTRACT

Currently, the steelmaking process uses a pulverized coal injection (PCI) system that serves as the heat source and reductant for ironmaking (blast furnace and FINEX) where system uses expensive high-grade coal and high operating costs. Hydrogen steelmaking is currently being developed to achieve carbon-free operation. To achieve a soft-landing during this phase of rapid change, the use of biomass and inexpensive, thermal coal, and coke dust is necessary. Research on their combustion characteristics is necessary to apply these alternative fuels to PCI. Therefore, this study analyzed the combustion characteristics of ignition delay, devolatilization, and char combustion using a laminar flow reactor visualization equipment that simulates blast furnace (BF) and FINEX PCI tuyere, using flame image data processing. The ignition time were generally longer in BF than in FINEX, and the char combustion length and time also showed the same trend due to the high oxygen rate which indicate under 2 ms on ignition delay, under 16 ms on char combustion. Also, the volatile cloud was qualitatively shown in the image to be highest in thermal coal and biomass with high volatile matter. Based on the correlation and theoretical calculation with proximate analysis and the results, ignition delay time had a combined effect of volatile matter and moisture except coke dust, and char combustion time affected unburned carbon. The combustion chemical characteristics were discussed with chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) model parameter. Through SEM image and BET analysis, the surface area has been increased more than 10 times after combustion. Consequently, the biomass and high moisture thermal coal could cofired within 10 % and coke dust could be cofired within 9 %, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Humanized mouse models to recapitulate human biological systems still have limitations, such as the onset of lethal graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), a variable success rate, and the low accessibility of total body irradiation (TBI). Recently, mice modified with the CD47-SIRPA axis have been studied to improve humanized mouse models. However, such trials have been rarely applied in NOD mice. In this study, we created a novel mouse strain, NOD-CD47nullRag2nullIL-2rγnull (RTKO) mice, and applied it to generate humanized mice. Methods: Four-week-old female NOD-Rag2nullIL-2rγnull (RID) and RTKO mice pre-conditioned with TBI or busulfan (BSF) injection were used for generating human CD34+ hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) engrafted humanized mice. Clinical signs were observed twice a week, and body weight was measured once a week. Flow cytometry for human leukocyte antigens was performed at intervals of four weeks or two weeks, and mice were sacrificed at 48 weeks after HSC injection. Results: For a long period from 16 to 40 weeks post transplantation, the percentage of hCD45 was mostly maintained above 25% in all groups, and it was sustained the longest and highest in the RTKO BSF group. Reconstruction of human leukocytes, including hCD3, was also most prominent in the RTKO BSF group. Only two mice died before 40 weeks post transplantation in all groups, and there were no life-threatening GvHD lesions except in the dead mice. The occurrence of GvHD has been identified as mainly due to human T cells infiltrating tissues and their related cytokines. Discussion: Humanized mouse models under all conditions applied in this study are considered suitable models for long-term experiments based on the improvement of human leukocytes reconstruction and the stable animal health. Especially, RTKO mice pretreated with BSF are expected to be a valuable platform not only for generating humanized mice but also for various immune research fields.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Quantification of the skeletal muscle response can help better understand the fundamentals of the musculoskeletal system and can serve as a diagnostic measure or recovery assessment tool during rehabilitation for neurological injuries. Surface electromyography (EMG) is commonly used to measure muscle activity, but it is limited to detecting myoelectric signals without anatomy associated information. In this study, we proposed to use ultra-fast ultrasound imaging and introduced a new image analysis methodology to quantify a muscle's spatialtemporal mechanical response. METHODS: The methodology is based on analyzing the spatial-temporal change of the impulsive kinetic energy during the period of muscle contraction. The analysis can derive an anatomy-registered muscle activation metric map that localizes regions of muscle activation. To demonstrate this, we intentionally evoked regional muscle responses in five participants without disabilities by electrically stimulating the median nerve and individual forearm muscle groups, respectively. Both ultrasound images and high-density EMG (HD-EMG) data were recorded and processed. RESULTS: We presented the ultrasound image-derived activation localization from five participants and compared the results with HD-EMG measurements. CONCLUSION: The comparison indicates a good resemblance for describing muscle recruitment pattern. SIGNIFICANCE: The proposed methodology can potentially become an alternative or complementary approach to surface EMG for the study of skeletal muscle activation and for diagnosis and prognosis in clinical settings.

Introduction: Testicular pain (TP) after laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) is a relatively underreported complication. This study aimed to investigate the incidence, characteristics, and factors associated with ipsilateral TP after left-sided LDN. Materials and Methods: This study prospectively collected baseline data and surgical details for all patients who underwent left-sided LDN during the study period. Each patient underwent scrotal ultrasonography 1 month postoperation. Donors were categorized by the level of gonadal vein ligation (level 1 at the renal vein confluence and level 2 at or below the iliac vessel crossing) and the presence or absence of TP. The characteristics of pain and demographics were compared across the groups. Results: Among 61 male patients who underwent left-sided LDN between March 2017 and December 2018, 54.1% (33/61) experienced ipsilateral TP. TP was more frequent in level 2 donors (64.3%) than in level 1 (45.5%), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.141). Most TP occurred within a week (60.6%), was mild (75.8%), and resolved within 3 months (63.7%). The incidence of varicocele and hydrocele was 32.8% and 34.4%, respectively. The occurrence of TP was not significantly associated with the presence of varicocele or hydrocele and other factors. Conclusion: More than half of the male donors who underwent LDN experienced TP. The findings emphasize the importance of discussing this potential complication during preoperative counseling. This study found no significant association between TP and the level of gonadal vein ligation or the presence of varicocele, warranting further investigation into the cause of TP.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a model for predicting post-treatment survival in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients using their CT images and clinical information, including various treatment information. We collected pre-treatment contrast-enhanced CT images and clinical information including patient-related factors, initial treatment options, and survival status from 692 patients. The patient cohort was divided into a training cohort (n = 507), a testing cohort (n = 146), and an external CT cohort (n = 39), which included patients who underwent CT scans at other institutions. After model training using fivefold cross-validation, model validation was performed on both the testing cohort and the external CT cohort. Our cascaded model employed a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract features from CT images and derive final survival probabilities. These probabilities were obtained by concatenating previously predicted probabilities for each interval with the patient-related factors and treatment options. We utilized two consecutive fully connected layers for this process, resulting in a number of final outputs corresponding to the number of time intervals, with values representing conditional survival probabilities for each interval. Performance was assessed using the concordance index (C-index), the mean cumulative/dynamic area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (mC/D AUC), and the mean Brier score (mBS), calculated every 3 months. Through an ablation study, we found that using DenseNet-121 as the backbone network and setting the prediction interval to 6 months optimized the model's performance. The integration of multimodal data resulted in superior predictive capabilities compared to models using only CT images or clinical information (C index 0.824 [95% CI 0.822-0.826], mC/D AUC 0.893 [95% CI 0.891-0.895], and mBS 0.121 [95% CI 0.120-0.123] for internal test cohort; C index 0.750 [95% CI 0.747-0.753], mC/D AUC 0.819 [95% CI 0.816-0.823], and mBS 0.159 [95% CI 0.158-0.161] for external CT cohort, respectively). Our CNN-based discrete-time survival prediction model with CT images and clinical information demonstrated promising results in predicting post-treatment survival of patients with HCC.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Whether tenofovir or entecavir has different effects on the prevention of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in secondary and tertiary preventive settings is still a matter of debate. This study aimed to compare the long-term prognosis of HCC between tenofovir and entecavir in patients with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS: Chronic hepatitis B patients diagnosed with HCC between November 2008 and December 2018 and treated with either entecavir or tenofovir at a tertiary center in Korea were included. The effect of tenofovir compared with entecavir on the prognosis of HBV-related HCC was assessed using multivariable-adjusted Cox and propensity score (PS)-matched analyses. Various predefined subgroup analyses were conducted. RESULTS: During a median follow-up period of 3.0 years, the mortality rate for entecavir-treated patients (n = 3469) was 41.2%, while tenofovir-treated patients (n = 3056) had a mortality rate of 34.6%. Overall survival (OS) was better in the tenofovir group (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.79; P < .001), which were consistently observed in the PS-matched analysis. The magnitude of the risk difference in OS was more prominent 2 years after the diagnosis of HCC (aHR, 0.50; P < .001) than 2 years before (aHR, 0.88; P = .005), and it was more pronounced in patients with earlier HCC stages. In all subgroups, except for those with shorter life expectancy, such as those with compromised liver function, tenofovir was associated with better OS compared with entecavir. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with HBV-related HCC, those treated with tenofovir had a better prognosis than those treated with entecavir, particularly among those with prolonged survival.

Objective: The current study aimed to investigate the effect of increasing ß-mannanase supplementation in diets containing copra meal (CM) on growth performance, meat quality, liver health, intestinal morphology, and nutrient utilization in broiler chickens. Methods: A total of 1,600 3-d-old Ross 308 broiler chickens (initial body weight [BW] ± SD = 43.3 ± 1.08 g) were randomly allotted to 1 of 5 treatment groups with 8 replicates. One group was fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet (control). Other 4 diets were prepared by inclusion of 10% commercial CM in the control diet with 0, 400, 800, and 1,600 U ß-mannanase/kg. Experiments lasted for 32 d. Results: Birds fed the control diet had less (p=0.001) feed conversion ratio (FCR) than those fed diets containing 10% CM without ß-mannanase supplementation. Increasing supplementation of ß-mannanase in diets containing 10% CM had no linear and quadratic effects on body weight gain, feed intake, and FCR in broiler chickens. The control diet had greater (p<0.01) apparent total tract retention (ATTR) of DM, GE, and N as compared to the diets containing 10% CM without ß-mannanase supplementation; however, no differences in the ATTR of Ca and P were identified between 2 diets. There were no linear and quadratic effects of increasing supplementation of ß-mannanase on the ATTR of DM, GE, N, Ca, and P in broiler diets containing 10% CM. Both inclusion of 10% CM and increasing supplementation of ß-mannanase in broiler diets did not affect apparent ME (AME) and N-corrected ME (AMEn) values in treatment diets. Conclusion: The use of 10% CM in broiler diets during growing and finishing period impairs growth performance by decreasing energy and nutrient utilization in diets. Increasing ß-mannanase supplementation in diets containing 10% CM has no positive effects on performance, meat quality, liver health, intestinal morphology, and nutrient utilization in broiler chickens.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: There is an urgent and unmet clinical need to develop nonpharmacological interventions for chronic pain management because of the critical side effects of opioids. Low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is an emerging noninvasive neuromodulation technology with high spatial specificity and deep brain penetration. Here, we developed a tightly focused 128-element ultrasound transducer to specifically target small mouse brains using dynamic focus steering. We demonstrate that tFUS stimulation at pain-processing brain circuits can significantly alter pain-associated behaviors in mouse models in vivo. Our findings indicate that a single-session focused ultrasound stimulation to the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) significantly attenuates heat pain sensitivity in wild-type mice and modulates heat and mechanical hyperalgesia in a humanized mouse model of chronic pain in sickle cell disease. Results further revealed a sustained behavioral change associated with heat hypersensitivity by targeting deeper cortical structures (eg, insula) and multisession focused ultrasound stimulation to S1 and insula. Analyses of brain electrical rhythms through electroencephalography demonstrated a significant change in noxious heat hypersensitivity-related and chronic hyperalgesia-associated neural signals after focused ultrasound treatment. Validation of efficacy was carried out through control experiments, tuning ultrasound parameters, adjusting interexperiment intervals, and investigating effects on age, sex, and genotype in a head-fixed awake model. Importantly, tFUS was found to be safe, causing no adverse effects on motor function or the brain's neuropathology. In conclusion, the validated proof-of-principle experimental evidence demonstrates the translational potential of novel focused ultrasound neuromodulation for next-generation pain treatment without adverse effects.

ABSTRACT

Cholesterol (Chol) plays a crucial role in shaping the intricate physicochemical attributes of biomembranes, exerting a considerable influence on water molecules proximal to the membrane interface. In this study, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations on the bilayers of two lipid species, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and palmitoyl sphingomyelin; they are distinct with respect to the structures of the hydrogen-bond (H-bond) acceptors. Our investigation focuses on the dynamic properties and H-bonds of water molecules in the lipid-membrane systems, with a particular emphasis on the influence of Chol at varying temperatures. Notably, in the gel phase at 303 K, the presence of Chol extends the lifetimes of H-bonds of the oxygen atoms acting as H-bond acceptors within DPPC with water molecules by a factor of 1.5-2.5. In the liquid-crystalline phase at 323 K, on the other hand, H-bonding dynamics with lipid membranes remain largely unaffected by Chol. This observed shift in H-bonding states serves as a crucial key to unraveling the subtle control mechanisms governing water dynamics in lipid-membrane systems.

BACKGROUND: Owing to the lack of understanding of the clinical significance of pericardial calcification during pericardiectomy, whether pericardial calcification should be considered when determining the optimal timing for pericardiectomy is debatable. We aimed to investigate the effect of pericardial calcification on early postoperative outcomes in patients who underwent pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis. METHODS: Altogether, 44 patients who underwent pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis were enrolled. After excluding three patients who underwent concurrent surgeries, a total of 41 patients were categorized into two groups based on the presence of pericardial calcification as determined by preoperative computed tomography and pathological examination. Preoperative clinical and imaging characteristics, intraoperative data, and early postoperative outcomes were compared between the two groups. A multivariable analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with postoperative complications. RESULTS: The group with and without PC comprised 21 and 20 patients, respectively. No significant differences were observed in 30-day mortality (n = 1 [5%]) in the group with pericardial calcification and no mortality in the group without pericardial calcification (p > 0.999). Other early postoperative outcome variables did not demonstrate any significant differences between the two groups. However, the use of cardiopulmonary bypass was associated with postoperative complications (p < 0.009, odds ratio: 63.5, 95% confidence interval: 5.13-3400). CONCLUSIONS: Pericardial calcification did not significantly affect the postoperative outcomes after pericardiectomy. Further comprehensive studies, including those with larger sample sizes and longitudinal designs, are necessary to determine whether pericardial calcification can significantly influence the timing of surgical intervention.

ABSTRACT

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the supplementary effects of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) and sodium butyrate (SB) when a graded level of fish meal (FM) was replaced with soy protein concentrate (SPC) in diets for juvenile red seabream (Pagrus major). A control diet was designed to contain 60% FM (F60). Two other diets were formulated by reducing FM levels to 40% and 20% with SPC (F40 and F20). Six more diets were formulated by adding 0.02% GABA or 0.2% SB to each F60, F40 and F20 diets (F60G, F60S, F40G, F40S, F20G and F20S). Each diet was randomly assigned to a triplicate group of fish (5.52 g/fish) and provided for eight weeks. Final body weight, weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed F60G, F60S, F40G and F40S diets were comparable and significantly higher (p < 0.05) than other groups. The growth of fish fed SB-containing diets was significantly increased (p < 0.05) compared to fish fed the respective control diets. The feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratios were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the fish fed all diets containing 60% and 40% FM compared to F20 and F20G groups. The F40S diet resulted in the highest feed utilization values. The F20S group exhibited significantly higher (p < 0.05) feed utilization than the F20 and F20G groups. Serum lysozyme activity was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in fish fed the GABA- and SB-containing diets compared to the F20 group. The F60S group exhibited the highest lysozyme activity which was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in the F20 and F40 groups. Therefore, the growth performance, feed utilization and innate immunity of red seabream can be enhanced by dietary supplementation with GABA or SB in low-FM diets containing SPC. The FM level in the juvenile red seabream diet can be reduced to 40% with SPC and GABA or SB while maintaining performance better than a diet containing 60% FM.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The steatosis-associated fibrosis estimator (SAFE) score has been developed to distinguish clinically significant fibrosis in patients with steatotic liver disease (SLD). However, validation of its performance in Asian subjects is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the SAFE score in Asian subjects with biopsy-proven SLD and in different subgroups according to age, sex, and body mass index. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 6383 living liver donors who underwent a liver biopsy between 2005 and 2023. Of these, 1551 subjects with biopsy-proven SLD were included. The performance of the SAFE score was evaluated using areas under the curve and compared with those of the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score (NFS) and fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4). RESULTS: The prevalence of clinically significant fibrosis in the cohort was 2.2%. The proportion of subjects with a "low-risk" SAFE score was the highest (91.0%), followed by those with "intermediate-risk" (7.8%) and "high-risk" (1.2%) scores. The prevalence of fibrosis in subjects with low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk scores was 1.6%, 6.6%, and 21.1%, respectively. The SAFE outperformed FIB-4 and NFS (area under the curve: 0.70 vs 0.64 for both NFS and FIB-4). However, it showed low diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity (27%) at the low cutoff (SAFE < 0) in subjects aged 30-39 years (fibrosis: 1.2%), despite having a high negative predictive value (0.99). CONCLUSION: While the SAFE score demonstrates superior performance compared with other noninvasive tests in Asian subjects with SLD, its performance varies across age groups. In younger subjects, particularly, its performance may be more limited.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a compact low-profile dual-band wearable textile antenna is proposed for on-body and off-body communications. The presented antenna works efficiently in the 5G n79 frequency band (4.4 - 5 GHz) and the ISM band (5.725 - 5.875 GHz). The designed antenna has an ultra-wide impedance bandwidth of 2.01 GHz and peak realized gains of 10.5 dBi and 12 dBi at 4.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz, respectively. The antenna has a small footprint (π × 0.3λ02), which is inspired by circular fractal geometry. The performance of the presented wearable antenna is evaluated at various body parts, including the arm, wrist, and chest. The link margin is evaluated in the on-body and off-body communication scenarios, i.e., communication with the implantable antenna and the outside-body antenna, which is 80 dB and 65 dB at 4.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz, respectively. The 1 gm/10 gm specific absorption rate values at 4.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz are 0.12/0.098 and 0.11/0.082, respectively, which are significantly lower than the standard values, making the proposed antenna suitable for modern wearable applications.

ABSTRACT

This study is the first report to characterize the Rhodus uyekii genome and study the development of microsatellite markers and their markers applied to the genetic structure of the wild population. Genome assembly was based on PacBio HiFi and Illumina HiSeq paired-end sequencing, resulting in a draft genome assembly of R. uyekii. The draft genome was assembled into 2652 contigs. The integrity assessment of the assemblies indicates that the quality of the draft assemblies is high, with 3259 complete BUSCOs (97.2%) in the database of Verbrata. A total of 31,166 predicted protein-coding genes were annotated in the protein database. The phylogenetic tree showed that R. uyekii is a close but distinct relative of Onychostoma macrolepis. Among the 10 fish genomes, there were significant gene family expansions (8-2387) and contractions (16-2886). The average number of alleles amplified by the 21 polymorphic markers ranged from 6 to 23, and the average PIC value was 0.753, which will be useful for evolutionary and genetic analysis. Using population genetic analysis, we analyzed genetic diversity and the genetic structures of 120 individuals from 6 populations. The average number of alleles per population ranged from 7.6 to 9.9, observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.496 to 0.642, and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.587 to 0.783. ABSTRACT

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-protein amino acid that is found in the brain and central nervous system of animals as an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It has been shown to have a variety of physiological functions, including stress reduction and immune enhancement. This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with GABA on growth, serum biochemistry, innate immunity, and disease resistance in juvenile olive flounders (Paralichthys olivaceus) challenged with Edwardsiella tarda under high-stocking density. A control diet and three experimental diets were prepared, with 150 mg/kg (GABA150), 200 mg/kg (GABA200), and 250 mg/kg (GABA250) of GABA added to each diet, respectively. Each experimental diet was fed to olive flounders in triplicate with an initial weight of 12.75 g ± 0.3 g in 40 L tanks at two stocking densities: normal density (20 fish/tank) and high density (40 fish/tank). After 8 weeks of the feeding trial, growth, feed utilization, whole-body proximate compositions, blood analyses, and non-specific immune responses were measured, and challenge tests were performed. There were no significant differences in the weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) among fish fed the GABA-supplemented diets at the two stocking densities. However, the normal-density groups showed significantly higher WG and SGR than the high-density groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio among all groups. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the whole-body proximate composition analysis (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences in cortisol levels in fish fed the GABA at both densities, but the high-density group showed a significantly higher cortisol than the low-density group. Blood GABA significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner regardless of the density groups (p < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase activity showed significantly higher levels than the control group, but there was no significant effect of the stocking densities in fish fed the GABA diets (p < 0.05). Myeloperoxidase activities in fish fed the GABA200 and GABA250 diets showed significantly higher levels at both of the stocking densities (p < 0.05). Lysozyme activity was significantly higher in the GABA150 group than in the CON, GABA200, and GABA250 groups (p < 0.05). After 15 days of challenge tests with Edwardsiella tarda, the cumulative survival rates of the GABA150, GABA200, and GABA250 groups were significantly higher than that of the CON group (p < 0.05). The results suggested that the optimal dietary GABA level for juvenile olive flounder culture is 150 mg/kg, regardless of rearing density, to enhance growth, immunity, and disease resistance.

ABSTRACT

Iron phosphate-based coating and iron silicate-based coating were used to inhibit the oxidation of sulfide minerals in rainy and submerged environments. The inhibiting effectiveness of coating agents on the oxidation of iron sulfide minerals was investigated using pyrite and rock samples resulting from acid drainage. The film formed with both surface-coating agents was identified by pyrite surface analysis. It was also confirmed that the formation of coatings varies depending on the crystallographic orientation. The inhibitory effects under rainy and submerged conditions were investigated using column experiments. Submerged conditions accelerated deterioration compared to that under rainy conditions. Iron phosphate coating had a significantly better oxidation-inhibitory effect (84.86-98.70%) than iron silicate coating (56.80-92.36%), and at a concentration of 300 mM, H+ elution was inhibited by more than 90% throughout the experiment. Furthermore, methods for effective film formation were investigated in terms of producing Fe3+; (1) application of coating agents mixed with oxidant (H2O2), (2) application of coating agent after the use of the oxidant. In a rainy environment, applying iron phosphate-based coating using the sequential method showed oxidation inhibition effects for cycles 1-9, whereas applying the mixed material showed effects for cycles 9-13. The use of a surface-coating agent after applying an oxidant did not inhibit oxidation. The surface coating agent and the oxidizing agent should be applied as a mixture to form a film.

ABSTRACT

An efficient design method for a compact and ultra-wideband multi-stage Wilkinson power divider in a parallel stripline (PSL) is proposed. To enhance the frequency bandwidth of the proposed power divider while reducing its size, the isolation branch is modified; that is, two capacitors are connected to both sides of a resistor at each isolation branch. For an efficient design process, the PSL power divider is equivalently represented by two microstrip power dividers, and the design equations are derived. Based on the design equations, an in-house algorithm is utilized to optimally determine the design parameters, including the line impedance, resistance, and capacitance of each stage. For example, a three-stage PSL power divider is designed with three λ/4 transmission lines at a base frequency of 5 GHz. To verify the accuracy of the design procedure, 3D EM simulations and measurements are performed, and the results show good agreement. Compared with the conventional three-stage Wilkinson power divider, the proposed PSL power divider achieves a wider frequency bandwidth of 1.16 to 6.51 GHz (139.5%) and a 23% shorter transmission line length of 207°, while exhibiting an insertion loss of 0.7 to 1.4 dB.
