ABSTRACT

Despite the considerable potential of AlGaN-based ultraviolet-B light-emitting diodes (UV-B LEDs) in various applications such as phototherapy, UV curing, plant growth, and analytical technology, their development is still ongoing due to low luminescence efficiency. In this study, we introduced a novel epitaxial growth mechanism to effectively control the height and thickness of AlGaN multiple wells (MWs) on AlGaN nanorod structures using horizontal reactor-based metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). By adjusting the H2 carrier gas flow rate, we could control the growth boundary layer's thickness, successfully separating the AlGaN well and p-AlGaN layer from the substrate. Cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements confirmed the stability of the core-shell AlGaN quantum wells as a highly stable nonpolarized structure, with the wavelength peak remaining almost unchanged under various injection currents. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) provided clear evidence of differentiation, highlighting the distinct formation of the 275 nm AlGaN core and the 295 nm AlGaN shell structure. The developed AlGaN MW structure, characterized by these rectification features, not only demonstrated a significantly improved electroluminescence (EL) peak intensity but also exhibited a much lower leakage current compared to the conventional core-shell AlGaN structure. The newly proposed growth mechanism and advanced nonpolarized core-shell AlGaN structure are expected to serve as excellent alternatives for substantially enhancing the efficiency of the next generation of high-efficiency UV LEDs.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock change factor for green manure crops that was developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Tier 2 method and compare this with the net global warming potential (GWP) index that is used to evaluate the contribution of green manuring to global warming. Four treatments were barley (Hordeum vulgare L.; B), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa R.; HV), a barley/hairy vetch mixture (BHV) and a conventional treatment (C). The aboveground biomass of green manure crops was incorporated into the soil on 25 May 2018, 26 April 2019, 29 April 2020, 30 April 2021 and 2 May 2022. Maize (Zea mays L.) was transplanted as the subsequent crop after the incorporation of green manures. SOC stock decreased with green manures, even though carbon input with green manures, including B, HV and BHV, was greater than that with C. The mean value of the SOC stock change factor for green manure crops, including B, HV and BHV was 0.627 and was significantly lower than that of the C. However, the net GWP also decreased with the incorporation of green manure crops, and the mean value of the relative net GWP index across B, HV and BHV was 0.853. These conflicting results were caused by different estimation methods between annual SOC change (△SOC) and net GWP. The estimation of SOC stock change using △SOC suggested by the IPCC method may overestimate the contribution of green manure crops to global warming. The net GWP method with comprehensive input and output of carbon in the soil system could provide a better understanding of the carbon balance in soil systems. In the current study, the comparison of △SOC and net GWP was conducted for at one site of upland soil for 5 years. Therefore, further research on estimating the effect of green manure crops on net GWP in various types of soil for longer years should be conducted.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the reducing effects of calcite and phosphogypsum on arsenate [As(V)] availability to plants and elucidate the mechanisms of As(V) immobilization. The concentration of available As(V) to plants in upland arable soils with 1% calcite and phosphogypsum decreased to 17.4% and 36.9%, respectively, compared to the control. As(V) phytoavailability depends on the soil pH and calcium materials. The process of stabilizing As(V) (F3; anion exchange) with phosphogypsum is faster and easier compared to that with calcite (F4; bind to carbonate), but it results in a less stable form. New Ca-As(V) minerals (Ca52(HAsO4)x(AsO4)∙yH2O, Ca5H2x(AsO4)∙yH2O, or Ca32(AsO4)∙10 H2O) were identified in X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns with calcite treatment. Precipitation, the primary mechanism induced by calcite, was activated at a soil pH above 8.0. Based on the deconvolution of calcium and sulfur X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra and the peak shift in the XRD pattern in phosphogypsum, the substitution in which SO42- is exchanged with HAsO42- is the primary mechanism for As(V) immobilization. Substitution induced by phosphogypsum is a suitable reaction in upland arable soils, the predominant form of As(V) in the soil, with a pH range of 5-7.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Understanding the health information needs of adolescents is the first step towards providing them with relevant information to aid them in their decision making regarding health issues. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to assess adolescents' needs, perceptions and sources of health information. METHODS: Four hundred sixty-nine high school students in Osijek, Croatia, participated in this study by answering a questionnaire. The collected data were analysed using basic frequency and non-parametric statistical methods. RESULTS: The most popular health topics identified by adolescents in our study were nutrition, diseases, depression, relationships, sexual intercourse and alcohol. Adolescents consider their parents the most reliable personal source of health information (72.0%), while they perceive the Internet as the main non-personal source of health information (29.8%). Adolescents wish to get more education about health issues at school (54.4%). Significant gender differences were found in adolescents' needs, perceptions and sources of health information. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to provide adolescents with systematic institutional health education and improve health advisory services and library/information services to assist adolescents in locating health information and resolving their health related questions.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the association between serum D-dimer levels and the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Clinical data of 675 patients undergoing LDLT were retrospectively analyzed. The exclusion criteria included a history of kidney dysfunction, emergency cases, and missing data. The final study population of 617 patients was divided into the normal and high D-dimer groups (cutoff: 0.5 mg/L). After LDLT, 145 patients (23.5%) developed AKI. A high D-dimer level (>0.5 mg/L) was an independent predictor of postoperative development of AKI in the multivariate analysis when combined with diabetes mellitus [DM], platelet count, and hourly urine output. AKI was significantly higher in the high D-dimer group than in the normal D-dimer group (odds ratio [OR], 2.792; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.227-6.353). Patients with a high D-dimer exhibited a higher incidence of early allograft dysfunction, longer intensive care unit stay, and a higher mortality rate. These results could improve the risk stratification of postoperative AKI development by encouraging the determination of preoperative D-dimer levels in patients undergoing LDLT.

ABSTRACT

Background: Persistent or recurrent lumbosacral pain is a common symptom after spinal surgery. Several interventions have been introduced for failed back surgery syndrome; however, their clinical efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness are insufficient. Sympathetic ganglion block has been selected for pain associated with the sympathetic nervous system. In this study, we compared pain and quality of life in patients with failed back surgery syndrome who responded and did not respond to lumbar sympathetic ganglion block. Methods: We included 84 patients diagnosed with failed back surgery syndrome who had lumbosacral pain and underwent lumbar sympathetic ganglion block between January 2020 and April 2021. The patients' data were retrospectively analyzed; clinical outcomes were assessed before (T0), 1 week after (T1), and 4 weeks after (T4) lumbar sympathetic ganglion block. Based on the pain difference from T0 to T1, we categorized patients into two groups: patients with ≥ 50% pain reduction (responder group) and patients with < 50% pain reduction (non-responder group). Demographic, clinical, surgical, and fluoroscopic data were evaluated and compared. The primary outcome was pain scores and the EuroQol-5D score from T0 to T4. Results: Among the 84 patients analyzed, 41 (48.8%) experienced ≥ 50% pain reduction at 1 week after lumbar sympathetic ganglion block. Lumbar sympathetic ganglion block significantly improved pain at T1 and T4 compared to T0 in both groups. Lumbar sympathetic ganglion block improved the EuroQol-5D score at T1 compared to T0 in the responder group. The responder group had a significant decrease in pain at T1 from T0 and T4 from T0 and a significant decrease in the EuroQol-5D score at T1 from T0 compared with the non-responder group. Coldness of the leg over time did not differ between the groups. No serious adverse events occurred in either of the groups. Conclusion: Lumbar sympathetic ganglion block may improve pain at 1 and 4 weeks in patients with failed back surgery syndrome. Patients with ≥ 50% pain reduction at 1 week showed simultaneous improvement in quality of life and pain reduction at 4 weeks. ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine the effect of different green manure treatments on net GWP and GHGI in upland soil. Barley (B), hairy vetch (HV), and a barley/hairy vetch mixture (BHV) were sown on an upland soil on November 4, 2017 and October 24, 2018. The aboveground biomass of these green manures was incorporated into soil on June 1, 2018 and May 8, 2019. In addition, a fallow treatment (F) was installed as the control. Maize was transplanted as the subsequent crop after incorporation of green manures. Green manuring significantly affected CO2 and N2O emission, but not CH4. Average cumulative soil respiration across years with HV and BHV were 37.0 Mg CO2 ha-1 yr-1 and 35.8 Mg CO2 ha-1 yr-1, respectively and significantly higher than those with under F and B (32.7 Mg CO2 ha-1 yr-1 and 33.0 Mg CO2 ha-1 yr-1, respectively). Cumulative N2O emissions across years with F and HV were 6.29 kg N2O ha-1 yr-1 and 5.44 kg N2O ha-1 yr-1, respectively and significantly higher than those with B and BHV (4.26 kg N2O ha-1 yr-1 and 4.42 kg N2O ha-1 yr-1, respectively). The net ecosystem carbon budget for HV (-0.5 Mg C ha-1 yr-1) was the greatest among the treatments (F; -1.61 Mg C ha-1 yr-1, B; -3.98 Mg C ha-1 yr-1, and BHV; -0.91 Mg C ha-1 yr-1) because of its high biomass yields and the yield of maize after incorporation of HV. There was no significant difference of GHGI among F, HV, and BHV. Incorporation of HV or BHV could reduce net CO2 emissions per unit of maize grain production as well as F.

ABSTRACT

The aims of this study were to determine type and application rate of composted animal manure to optimize sweet potato yield relative to N2O emissions from upland soils. To this end, the study was conducted on upland soils amended with different types and rates of composted animal manure and located at two geographically different regions of South Korea. Field trials were established at Miryang and Yesan in South Korea during the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) growing season over 2 years: 2017 (Year 1) and 2018 (Year 2). Three composted animal manures (chicken, cow, and pig) were applied at the rates of 0, 10, and 20 Mg ha-1 to upland soils in both locations. In both Years and locations, manure type did not affected significantly cumulative N2O emissions from soil during the sweet potato growing season or the belowground biomass of sweet potato. However, application rate of animal manures affected significantly the cumulative N2O emission, nitrogen (N) in soil, and belowground biomass of sweet potato. An increase in cumulative N2O emission with application rates of animal manures was related to total N and inorganic N concentration in soil. The belowground biomass yield of sweet potato but also the cumulative N2O emission increased with increasing application rate of composted animal manures up to 7.6 and 16.0 Mg ha-1 in Miryang and Yesan, respectively. To reduce N2O emission from arable soil while increasing crop yield, composted animal manures should be applied at less than application rate that produce the maximum belowground biomass of sweet potato.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine cadmium (Cd) accumulation in arable soil, changes in Cd extractability and relevant soil properties, and Cd uptake by rice plants after long-term (50 years) application of phosphate (P) fertilizer and compost. A long-term field experiment was performed with rice crops from 1967 to 2016. Treatments included nitrogen and potassium fertilization (NK), nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium fertilization (NPK), nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium fertilization with compost application (NPK + compost), and control. Total Cd concentration in soil amended with NPK and NPK + compost continuously increased from 110 µg kg-1 up to 232 µg kg-1 from 1976 to 2016 but remained unchanged in control soil and soil amended with only NK. Plant-available Cd concentration in soil increased with year for all treatments, likely as a result of relevant changes in soil chemical properties. Cd concentrations in rice harvested in 2017 treated with NPK or NPK + compost were 212 µg Cd kg-1 and 223 µg Cd kg-1, respectively. These values exceed the maximum permissible level (200 µg Cd kg-1) established by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea.

ABSTRACT

One-dimensional nanowires based on Group III-nitride materials are emerging as one of the most promising structures for applications of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes (LDs), solar cells, and photocatalysts. However, leading to the so-called "green gap" in photonics, the fabrication of high concentration indium gallium nitride (InGaN) and long-InGaN structures remains still challenging. In this study, we performed simulations for structural modeling of uniform temperature distribution in a nanowire epitaxy, and have successfully developed high-concentration InGaN and long-InGaN nanowire heterostructures on silicon (Si) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system. From scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) results, it was confirmed that the various doped-InGaN nanowire structures show much higher crystal quality compared to conventional nanowire structures. By introducing a new three-step modulated growth technique, the n-/p-InGaN active regions were greatly increased and the optical properties were also dramatically improved due to reduced phase separation. In addition, a multi-band p-InGaN/GaN heterostructure was successfully fabricated with the core-shell nanowire structures, which enable the emission of light in the entire visible spectral range, and protect the InGaN surface from surface recombination. This paper offers important insight into the design and epitaxial growth of InGaN nanowire heterostructures.

This study aimed to characterize forearm mixed nerve conduction study (NCS) findings in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Eighty-two patients with CTS and 48 healthy controls were enrolled. We directly compared the forearm mixed NCS and ultrasonography results from CTS patients with those from the controls. Correlation analyses were performed to identify the relationship between forearm mixed NCS parameters and ultrasound measurements in CTS. We observed reduced forearm mixed nerve amplitude and increased cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve at the proximal carpal tunnel (CT) inlet in CTS. The forearm mixed nerve amplitude negatively correlated with the CSA at the proximal CT inlet. We found a negative correlation between Bland's neurophysiological grade and the forearm mixed nerve amplitude as well as a positive correlation between the CSA of the median nerve at the proximal CT inlet and Bland's neurophysiological grade. We confirmed that the reduced median mixed nerve amplitude is the distinguishing feature of forearm mixed NCS in CTS. Our findings suggest that the forearm mixed NCS is potentially useful in evaluating its severity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and unexpected finding of the intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) including somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) during microsurgical clipping of an unruptured anterior choroidal artery (AChA) aneurysm. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2011 to March 2018, the neurophysiological, clinical, and radiological data of 115 patients who underwent microsurgical clipping for an unruptured AChA aneurysm under IONM were retrospectively analyzed. The incidence of ischemic complications after microsurgical clipping of unruptured AChA aneurysms as well as the false-negative rate, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of IONM during surgery were calculated. RESULTS: Ischemic complications after the microsurgical clipping of an AChA aneurysm under IONM occurred in 7 of 115 patients (6.08%). Among them, 3 were symptomatic (2.6%). The false-negative rate of IONM for ischemic complications was 6.08% (7 patients). High specificity; 100% (95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.972-1.000), PPVs; 100% (95% CI = 0.055-1.000), and NPVs; 93% (95% CI = 0.945-0.973) with low sensitivity; 11.1% (95% CI = 0.006-0.111) were calculated. CONCLUSIONS: IONM including transcranial MEP during microsurgical clipping of unruptured AChA aneurysm might have limited usefulness. Therefore, other MEP monitoring using direct cortical stimulation or modified transcranial methodology should be considered to compensate for it.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate whether otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are impaired in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and whether such dysfunction is associated with serological and electrophysiological features of MG. Methods: We tested 15 patients with MG (30 ears) and 10 healthy age- and sex-matched subjects (20 ears) for transiently evoked OAE (TEOAE) and distortion product OAE (DPOAE). Results: Compared with controls, MG patients revealed a significant reduction in the amplitude of TEOAEs (p < 0.05) and DPOAEs at higher frequencies between 2,026 and 4,053 Hz (p < 0.05). In the subgroup analysis, TEOAE and DPOAE amplitudes were significantly lower in the acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibody-positive group (p < 0.05) as well as in the repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS)-positive (p < 0.05) group. In particular, the OAE alteration significantly correlated with anti-AChR antibody titers. No significant difference of the OAEs was found between thymomatous and non-thymomatous MG or between purely ocular and generalized MG. Conclusions: Our study confirms that OAEs reveal subclinical dysfunction of the cholinergic neurotransmission of cochlear outer hair cells and correlate well with electrophysiological and serological characteristics of MG patients. Our findings imply that the measurement of OAEs might increase the diagnostic accuracy and help to monitor the severity of MG.

ABSTRACT

College students tend to lack access to health information. Because social networking sites (SNSs) are popularly adopted by college students, SNSs are considered to be good media channels for college students to obtain health-related information. This study examines the factors that influence college students' health information-seeking and -sharing activities on Facebook. An online survey was distributed to college students between the ages of 18 and 29 to determine intentions pertaining to health information activities according to the factors identified for the study. The factors included both contextual factors (such as health topic sensitivity and health information sources) as well as user factors (such as demographics). Our findings showed that college students are willing to read and post health-related information on Facebook when the health topic is not sensitive. In addition, there are clear differences in preferences between professional sources and personal sources as health information sources. It was found that most user factors, except gender, have no influence on health information activities. The impacts of SNS contexts, awareness of information sources, types of interlocutors, and privacy concerns are further discussed.

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the phosphorus (P) level required to induce cadmium (Cd) precipitation in a contaminated arable soil with low concentrations of Cd and (2) the primary mechanism of Cd immobilization at different P levels. Phosphorus was added at levels of 0 800, 1600, and 16,000 mg P kg(-1) to a soil containing 5.57 mg Cd kg(-1). The concentration of 1 M NH4OAc extractable Cd decreased significantly with P levels up to 1600 mg kg(-1) due to an increase in soil pH and negative charge of soil (p<0.001). A further decrease in 1 M NH4OAc extractable Cd concentration was noted when P was increased to 16,000 mg P kg(-1) and may have been the result of Cd precipitation. This study suggest that adding P at high levels may help in the formation of geochemically stable Cd minerals in soil containing low levels of this heavy metal.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Headache may be a warning sign of subsequent stroke in patients with vertebral artery dissection (VAD). Even though the headache characteristics of VAD have been described predominantly in patients with extracranial VAD and neurological complications, headache semiology is not well known in patients with uncomplicated intracranial vertebral artery dissection (ICVAD). In the present study, we attempt to identify the headache semiology that characterizes ICVAD and validate the revised version of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3 beta) criteria for headache attributed to intracranial artery dissection. METHODS: Six patients with neurologically uncomplicated ICVAD presented at a participating medical center, and eight similar patients were reviewed in the literature. Combining these data, we analyzed headache characteristics of patients with uncomplicated ICVAD according to their pain onset and duration, nature, intensity, location, aggravating and relieving factors, associated symptoms, response to medication, and prognosis. RESULTS: Headache in uncomplicated ICVAD usually has an acute mode of onset (11/14) and persistent (10/14) temporal feature. Pain that has a throbbing quality (nine of 14) and severe intensity (13/14) on the ipsilesional (10/14) and occipitonuchal area (12/14) is a headache prototype in ICVAD. Additionally, headache was intensified by head flexion and rotation (three of six), and relieved by head extension and supine positioning (five of six). Headache of all patients in the present study fulfilled the ICHD-3 beta criteria. CONCLUSION: Headache semiology of uncomplicated ICVAD is mostly homogenous in the present study. These characteristics may be helpful in the diagnosis of uncomplicated ICVAD.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine trends in studies of teens' health information behaviour. METHODS: Eighty-two articles published between 2000 and 2012 were selected and analysed in various aspects: health topics by year, information sources, data collection methods, use of theories and models, collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts and published journals. RESULTS: Fifty-seven per cent of the studies focused on specific health topics, such as sexual health, while the rest covered general health topics. Almost half of the studies examined how teens search for and use health information on the Internet. Surveys were the most popular data collection technique. Only 12.2% were based on a theory or model. About 42% were conducted collaboratively by authors from multiple disciplines. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: With the increasing attention to specific health topics and online resources, the health information behaviour of teens has been examined more frequently since the mid-2000s. Its interdisciplinary nature was evidently shown from various disciplines that the authors were affiliated with and the journals of the published studies represented. This study suggests that there should be efforts to reflect new technology tools, apply mixed methods and increase the engagement level of collaboration to evolve this research domain.
