ABSTRACT

Presuming that the incidence of cerebral palsy (CP) in Korea is decreasing due to medical advances, we analyzed the trends and risk factors of CP in changing circumstances. We identified all women who delivered a singleton between 2007 and 2015 using the Korea National Health Insurance (KNHI). Information on pregnancy and birth was obtained by linking the KNHI claims database and data from the national health-screening program for infants and children. The 4-years incidence of CP decreased significantly from 4.77 to 2.52 per 1000 babies during the study period. The multivariate analysis revealed that the risk of developing CP was 29.5 times higher in preterm infants born before 28 weeks of gestational age, 24.5 times higher in infants born between 28 and 34 weeks, and 4.5 times higher in infants born between 34 and 36 weeks, compared to full-term appropriate for age (2.5 ~ 4 kg of body weight) infants. 5.6 times higher in those with birth weight < 2500 g, and 3.8 times higher in pregnancies with polyhydramnios. Additionally, respiratory distress syndrome increased the risk of developing CP by 2.04 times, while necrotizing enterocolitis was associated with a 2.80-fold increased risk of CP. In Korea, the incidence of CP in singleton decreased from 2007 to 2015. We need to continue to focus on developing medical technologies for the early detection of high-risk neonates and minimizing brain damage to reduce the incidence rate of CP effectively.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analyze mastication and swallowing in the elderly and confirm the association with dysphagia characteristics. A questionnaire was developed to evaluate the masticating and swallowing functions of the elderly. Mastication was analyzed using electromyography, and tongue/lip pressures were measured using Iowa Oral Performance Instrument. The results of the questionnaire showed that statistical difference in the number of teeth between the group without and with, decreased ability to swallow, and there was a correlation with lip pressure. Additionally, the higher number of teeth, the higher muscle activity, and there is a positive correlation between the number of chews and the lip pressure. Consequently, our findings suggested oral health parameters are closely associated with mastication/swallowing ability. Finally, based on the results obtained for different foods tested, we suggested that texture-modified foods are necessary to enhance swallowing ability.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: Polyhydramnios may develop when the fetus cannot swallow amniotic fluid or the amount of fetal urine increases. Occasionally, unpredictable fetal abnormalities can be diagnosed postnatally. Bilateral vocal cord paralysis in the fetus may cause polyhydramnios, which could be related to impaired prenatal swallowing. PATIENT CONCERN: A 36-year-old multipara underwent an emergent cesarean section because of polyhydramnios and active labor at 35 + 5 weeks of gestation and gave birth to a girl. DIAGNOSIS: The neonate cried feebly and exhibited cyanosis as well as very weak response to stimuli. Chest retraction and stridor were observed. Laryngoscopic examination revealed no movement in both the vocal cords, and bilateral vocal cord paralysis was diagnosed. INTERVENTIONS: When the baby was 40 days old, she underwent tracheostomy to alleviate the persistent stridor and oral feeding difficulties. OUTCOMES: She was discharged at the age of 60 days while in the tracheostomy state. LESSONS: Securing the airway of neonates with bilateral vocal cord paralysis, tracheoesophageal fistula, or muscular dystrophy, which can be detected after delivery in pregnant women with idiopathic polyhydramnios, is important. Therefore, pregnant women with idiopathic polyhydramnios must be attended to by experts, such as neonatologists, anesthesiologists, or otolaryngologists, who can secure the airway.

ABSTRACT

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], an important oilseed crop, is a low-cost source of protein and oil. In Southeast Asia and Africa, soybeans are widely cultivated for use as traditional food and feed and industrial purposes. Given the ongoing changes in global climate, developing crops that are resistant to climatic extremes and produce viable yields under predicted climatic conditions will be essential in the coming decades. To develop such crops, it will be necessary to gain a thorough understanding of the genetic basis of agronomic and plant root traits. As plant roots generally lie beneath the soil surface, detailed observations and phenotyping throughout plant development present several challenges, and thus the associated traits have tended to be ignored in genomics studies. In this study, we phenotyped 357 soybean landraces at the early vegetative (V2) growth stages and used a 180 K single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) soybean array in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) conducted to determine the phenotypic relationships among root traits, elucidate the genetic bases, and identify significant SNPs associated with root trait-controlling genomic regions/loci. A total of 112 significant SNP loci/regions were detected for seven root traits, and we identified 55 putative candidate genes considered to be the most promising. Our findings in this study indicate that a combined approach based on SNP array and GWAS analyses can be applied to unravel the genetic basis of complex root traits in soybean, and may provide an alternative high-resolution marker strategy to traditional bi-parental mapping. In addition, the identified SNPs, candidate genes, and diverse variations in the root traits of soybean landraces will serve as a valuable basis for further application in genetic studies and the breeding of climate-resilient soybeans characterized by improved root traits.

ABSTRACT

Phosphine (PH3) is an ideal fumigant alternative on methyl bromide (MB) as MB has been classified as an ozone-depleting substance. However, several challenges limit its efficient use in crop production, including the emergence of PH3-resistant insect pests and the incidence of phytotoxic effects on nursery plants. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the mechanism underlying PH3 phytotoxicity in plants using transcriptomic techniques. Fumigation with 2 g/m3 PH3 induced phytotoxic effects in A. thaliana, as evidenced by a decrease in growth and vegetation indices compared to the control group. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that PH3 fumigation phytotoxicity responses in A. thaliana involve genes related to hypoxia stress and energy metabolism. Additionally, pretreatment with ethylene induced pre-adaptation to hypoxia under light conditions during fumigation effectively suppressed the phytotoxic effects of PH3 in A. thaliana by increasing the expression of hypoxia-adaptive genes. Moreover, the phytotoxicity of PH3 was also confirmed in pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.), and was dependent on light. Overall, our findings showed that fumigation under light conditions and ethylene pretreatment could be used to minimize PH3-induced phytotoxic effects in plants.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian anomalies except for uni- or bilateral streak gonads are rare. We present a rare case of an ovarian anomaly in which both ovaries were connected by extra tissue. CASE SUMMARY: A 32-year-old, primipara with a twin pregnancy at 36 weeks of gestation was admitted to the hospital with severe preeclampsia. She underwent emergency cesarean section owing to persistent headache, blurred vision, and general edema. Following a peritoneal incision, a thin rectangular-shaped tissue was seen in front of the uterus. After delivery, the extra tissue was removed; no other anomalies were reported in either the ovaries or uterus. Pathology results of the removed tissue disclosed a well-vascularized loose stromal tissue with few follicles and scattered luteinized cells. In this case, to prevent pelvic adhesion or intestinal obstruction resulting from volvulus, strangulation, and torsion, the extra tissue was removed. CONCLUSION: We report a case of a rare ovarian anomaly where both ovaries were connected by extra tissue. If the extra tissue extends to the abdominal cavity, it should be removed to prevent pelvic adhesion or abdominal complications including intestinal volvulus, strangulation, and torsion.

The role of the most fungal endophytes in the host plant growth and production of metabolites under stress conditions is still unknown. Fungal endophytes occur in almost all plants to benefit the host plants exposed to biotic and abiotic stress. In the present work, we investigated salt (NaCl) stress alleviation capability of a fungal endophyte (Porostereum spadiceum-AGH786). The culture filtrate (CF: 1.5 mL.) of P. spadiceum-AGH786 contained IAA (158 µg/ml), SA (29.3 µg/ml), proline (114.6 µg/ml), phenols (167.4 µg/ml), lipids (71.4 µg/ml), sugar (133.2 µg/ml), flavonoids (105.04 µg/ml). Smaller amounts of organic acids, such as butyric acid (5.8 µg/ml), formic acid (2.34 µg/ml), succinic acid (2.02 µg/ml), and quinic acid (2.25 µg/ml) were also found in CF of P. spadiceum-AGH786. Similarly, the CF displayed antioxidant activity in 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-Azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays. Moreover, wheat plants colonized by P. spadiceum-AGH786 showed significantly (P = 0.05) higher polyphenol oxidases activity (2.2 mg/g DW) under normal conditions as compared to the NaCl-treated plants. We also observed that P. spadiceum-AGH786 improved biomass (0.30 g) of wheat plants subjected to 140 mM NaCl stress. The results conclude that the wheat plant colonization by P. spadiceum-AGH786 greatly improved the plant growth under 70 mM and 140 mM NaCl stress. Thus, the biomass of the P. Spadiceum-AGH786 can be used in saline soil to help the host plants.

Recent concerns on health and sustainability have prompted the use of legumes as a source of plant-based proteins, resulting in the application of their cooking water as a substitute for egg whites. In this study, the cooking water of yellow soybeans was powdered, and, subsequently, the nutritional and functional characteristics of powders from yellow soybeans (YSP), chickpeas (CHP), and egg whites (EWP) were compared. The main components of these powders (total polyphenol, total carbohydrate, and protein), along with their hydration properties (hygroscopicity, water solubility index, and water/oil holding capacities), and emulsifying and foaming properties, were identified. The muffins prepared with YSP, CHP, and EWP were analyzed to determine their basic characteristics, such as volume, baking loss, and sensory attributes. The results of the powder analyses indicated that YSP was significantly superior to CHP and EWP, particularly in terms of holding capacities, and emulsion and foam stabilities. The sensory evaluation results showed that there was no statistically significant difference in overall acceptance among the muffin samples. Therefore, YSP can be used as an alternative to CHP or EWP, and applied as a novel ingredient in various vegan products.

ABSTRACT

Root system architecture and morphological diversification in wild accessions are important for crop improvement and productivity in adzuki beans. In this study, via analysis using 2-dimensional (2D) root imaging and WinRHIZO Pro software, we described the root traits of 61 adzuki bean accessions in their early vegetative growth stage. These accessions were chosen for study because they are used in Korea's crop improvement programs; however, their root traits have not been sufficiently investigated. Analysis of variance revealed a significant difference between the accessions of all measured root traits. Distribution analysis demonstrated that most of the root traits followed normal distribution. The accessions showed up to a 17-fold increase in the values in contrasting accessions for the root traits. For total root length (TRL), the values ranged from 82.43 to 1435 cm, and for surface area (SA), they ranged from 12.30 to 208.39 cm2. The values for average diameter (AD) ranged from 0.23 to 0.56 mm. Significant differences were observed for other traits. Overall, the results showed that the accession IT 305544 had the highest TRL, SA, and number of tips (NT), whereas IT 262477 and IT 262492 showed the lowest values for TRL, SA, and AD. Principal component analysis showed an 89% variance for PC1 and PC2. K-mean clustering explained 77.4% of the variance in the data and grouped the accessions into three clusters. All six root traits had greater coefficients of variation (≥15%) among the tested accessions. Furthermore, to determine which root traits best distinguished different accessions, the correlation within our set of accessions provided trait-based ranking depending on their contribution. The identified accessions may be advantageous for the development of new crossing combinations to improve root features in adzuki beans during the early growth stage. The root traits assessed in this study could be attributes for future adzuki bean crop selection and improvement.

ABSTRACT

Concerns regarding sustainability have prompted the search of value in the by-products of food manufacturing. Such is the case of the cooking water (CW) of chickpeas, which has shown its potential as a vegan egg white replacement. This study aimed to characterize and compare the CW from three novel legumes (black soybeans, BSB; yellow soybeans, YSB; and small black beans, SBB) obtained from the processing of Korean soybean foods, and the widely used CW from chickpeas (CH), with regard to total polyphenol, total carbohydrate, and protein contents, and further compare their foaming and emulsifying abilities and stabilities. Compositional analysis revealed that all the studied legumes possessed higher values than CH for all parameters. Furthermore, the CW from these legumes exhibited enhanced functional properties, particularly foaming capacity and stability. Taken together, our results suggest that the CW from BSB, YSB, and SBB, sourced from the manufacturing of legume food products, has the potential of being revalorized as a plant-based functional ingredient for vegan product development.

The increase in worldwide trade has caused the quality maintenance of commercialized agriproducts to be crucial in keeping its economic value. In recent years, methyl bromide (MB) has been used dominantly during quarantine and pre-shipment, despite it being an environmental hazard with global repercussions. Through this study, it was shown that Arabidopsis thaliana's 2 h exposure to the MB treatment displayed no signs of phytotoxicity, whereas its 4 h exposure significantly interfered with growth. The transcriptomic analysis found the molecular modifications in A. thaliana after the MB fumigation with the up-regulation of genes specifically relative to the abiotic and oxidative stress, and the down-regulation of auxin transporter genes. Some important gene expressions were verified by RT-qPCR and their expression patterns were similar. Oxidative stresses via the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in relation to MB phytotoxicity were confirmed with the increased malondialdehyde in MB-4h-treated A. thaliana. Uneven distribution of auxins via lower expression of auxin transporter genes was also determined using UPLC-ESI-QqQ MS. Application of two ROS scavengers such as N-acetyl-cysteine and L-glutathione minimized MB phytotoxic effect in A. thaliana. Therefore, MB caused severe oxidative stress, and alternatives regarding the use of MB should be considered.

ABSTRACT

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) play essential roles in diverse cellular processes through post-transcriptional regulation of RNAs. The subcellular localization of RBPs is thus under tight control, the breakdown of which is associated with aberrant cytoplasmic accumulation of nuclear RBPs such as TDP-43 and FUS, well-known pathological markers for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia (ALS/FTD). Here, we report in Drosophila model for ALS/FTD that nuclear accumulation of a cytoplasmic RBP Staufen may be a new pathological feature. We found that in Drosophila C4da neurons expressing PR36, one of the arginine-rich dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs), Staufen accumulated in the nucleus in Importin- and RNA-dependent manner. Notably, expressing Staufen with exogenous NLS-but not with mutated endogenous NLS-potentiated PR-induced dendritic defect, suggesting that nuclear-accumulated Staufen can enhance PR toxicity. PR36 expression increased Fibrillarin staining in the nucleolus, which was enhanced by heterozygous mutation of stau (stau+/-), a gene that codes Staufen. Furthermore, knockdown of fib, which codes Fibrillarin, exacerbated retinal degeneration mediated by PR toxicity, suggesting that increased amount of Fibrillarin by stau+/- is protective. stau+/- also reduced the amount of PR-induced nuclear-accumulated Staufen and mitigated retinal degeneration and rescued viability of flies expressing PR36. Taken together, our data show that nuclear accumulation of Staufen in neurons may be an important pathological feature contributing to the pathogenesis of ALS/FTD.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be helpful to obtain an accurate diagnosis of acute abdominal pain in pregnancy. Adnexal torsion presenting in the first or second trimester can be confirmed and treated through laparoscopic surgery; however laparoscopic surgery in the third trimester can be difficult owing to the large uterus, and a gridiron incision can be useful. CASE REPORT/CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old gravida 1, para 0 (G1P0) woman at 30 + 4 weeks of gestation presented with sudden-onset cyclic pain in the right lower quadrant. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a normal appendix, and MRI showed a normal appendix and normal ovaries. The patient's prominent tender point was marked and compared with the MR images, which confirmed the mark as the position of the right ovary. Laparotomy was performed through a gridiron incision, and a folded right ovary was identified. The ovary was unfolded, and TachoSil® and Surgicel® were used to maintain the unfolded position. The patient's pain resolved, and her postoperative course was uneventful. She delivered a healthy, 2540-g male baby at 35 weeks' gestation. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS: A gridiron incision was useful to treat a folded ovary in the third trimester and to evaluate the adnexa and minimize uterine manipulation.

ABSTRACT

Pregnant women and their fetuses are among the vulnerable populations that can be severely affected by communicable diseases. As such, some vaccines such as the influenza and the Tdap (tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis) vaccines are strongly recommended in each pregnancy, with generally safe profiles. Other vaccines can be offered based on risk factors, and only when the benefits of receiving them outweigh the risks. Development of vaccines against group B streptococcus infection and respiratory syncytial virus infection are of great importance. In this paper, the recommendations for administration of each vaccine during pregnancy are discussed. The FIGO Committee for Safe Motherhood and Newborn Health Committee endorses the recommendations to vaccinate all pregnant women against influenza during the influenza season at any time during the pregnancy and against Tdap preferably between the 27th and 36th weeks of pregnancy in each pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Abiotic stresses (e.g., heat or limited water and nutrient availability) limit crop production worldwide. With the progression of climate change, the severity and variation of these stresses are expected to increase. Exogenous silicon (Si) has shown beneficial effects on plant growth; however, its role in combating the negative effects of heat stress and their underlying molecular dynamics are not fully understood. RESULTS: Exogenous Si significantly mitigated the adverse impact of heat stress by improving tomato plant biomass, photosynthetic pigments, and relative water content. Si induced stress tolerance by decreasing the concentrations of superoxide anions and malondialdehyde, as well as mitigating oxidative stress by increasing the gene expression for antioxidant enzymes (peroxidases, catalases, ascorbate peroxidases, superoxide dismutases, and glutathione reductases) under stress conditions. This was attributed to increased Si uptake in the shoots via the upregulation of low silicon (SlLsi1 and SlLsi2) gene expression under heat stress. Interestingly, Si stimulated the expression and transcript accumulation of heat shock proteins by upregulating heat transcription factors (Hsfs) such as SlHsfA1a-b, SlHsfA2-A3, and SlHsfA7 in tomato plants under heat stress. On the other hand, defense and stress signaling-related endogenous phytohormones (salicylic acid [SA]/abscisic acid [ABA]) exhibited a decrease in their concentration and biosynthesis following Si application. Additionally, the mRNA and gene expression levels for SA (SlR1b1, SlPR-P2, SlICS, and SlPAL) and ABA (SlNCEDI) were downregulated after exposure to stress conditions. CONCLUSION: Si treatment resulted in greater tolerance to abiotic stress conditions, exhibiting higher plant growth dynamics and molecular physiology by regulating the antioxidant defense system, SA/ABA signaling, and Hsfs during heat stress.

Background: Preterm birth is strongly associated with increasing mortality, incidence of disability, intensity of neonatal care required, and consequent costs. We examined the clinical utility of the potential preterm birth risk factors from admitted pregnant women with symptomatic preterm labor and developed prediction models to obtain information for prolonging pregnancies. Methods: This retrospective study included pregnant women registered with the KOrean Preterm collaboratE Network (KOPEN) who had symptomatic preterm labor, between 16 and 34 gestational weeks, in a tertiary care center from March to November 2016. Demographics, obstetric and medical histories, and basic laboratory test results obtained at admission were evaluated. The preterm birth probability was assessed using a nomogram and decision tree according to birth gestational age: early preterm, before 32 weeks; late preterm, between 32 and 37 weeks; and term, after 37 weeks. Results: Of 879 registered pregnant women, 727 who gave birth at a designated institute were analyzed. The rates of early preterm, late preterm, and term births were 18.16%, 44.02%, and 37.83%, respectively. With the developed nomogram, the concordance index for early and late preterm births was 0.824 (95% CI: 0.785-0.864) and 0.717 (95% CI: 0.675-0.759) respectively. Preterm birth was significantly more likely among women with multiple pregnancy and had water leakage due to premature rupture of membrane. The prediction rate for preterm birth based on decision tree analysis was 86.9% for early preterm and 73.9% for late preterm; the most important nodes are watery leakage for early preterm birth and multiple pregnancy for late preterm birth. Conclusion: This study aims to develop an individual overall probability of preterm birth based on specific risk factors at critical gestational times of preterm birth using a range of clinical variables recorded at the initial hospital admission. Therefore, these models may be useful for clinicians and patients in clinical decision-making and for hospitalization or lifestyle coaching in an outpatient setting.

ABSTRACT

Salinity stress hinders the growth potential and productivity of crop plants by influencing photosynthesis, disturbing the osmotic and ionic concentrations, producing excessive oxidants and radicals, regulating endogenous phytohormonal functions, counteracting essential metabolic pathways, and manipulating the patterns of gene expression. In response, plants adopt counter mechanistic cascades of physio-biochemical and molecular signaling to overcome salinity stress; however, continued exposure can overwhelm the defense system, resulting in cell death and the collapse of essential apparatuses. Improving plant vigor and defense responses can thus increase plant stress tolerance and productivity. Alternatively, the quasi-essential element silicon (Si)-the second-most abundant element in the Earth's crust-is utilized by plants and applied exogenously to combat salinity stress and improve plant growth by enhancing physiological, metabolomic, and molecular responses. In the present review, we elucidate the potential role of Si in ameliorating salinity stress in crops and the possible mechanisms underlying Si-associated stress tolerance in plants. This review also underlines the need for future research to evaluate the role of Si in salinity stress in plants and the identification of gaps in the understanding of this process as a whole at a broader field level.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Methanol utilization by bacteria is important for various industrial processes. Methylotrophic bacteria are taxonomically diverse and some species promote plant growth and induce stress tolerance. However, methylotrophic potential of bacterial endophytes is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to evaluate the metabolomic and proteomic changes in endophytic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens RWL-1 caused by its methanol utilization and the resultant influence on its phytohormone production. METHODS: B. amyloliquefaciens RWL-1 was grown in LB medium with different concentrations [0 (control), 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4%) of methanol to examine its methylotrophic potential. SDS-PAGE analysis was carried out for bacterial protein confirmation. Moreover, the phytohormones (indole 3 acetic acid (IAA), gibberellins (GAs), abscisic acid (ABA)) produced by RWL-1 in methanol supplemented medium were quantified by GC-MS/SIM (6890N Network GC system, and 5973 Network Mass Selective Detector; Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA), while the antioxidants were estimated spectrophotometrically (T60 UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Leicester, UK). The amino acid quantification was carried out by amino acid analyzer (HITACHI L-8900, Japan). Furthermore, Nano-liquid chromatography (LC)-MS/MS analysis was performed with an Agilent system (Wilmington, DE, USA) for proteomic analysis while mascot algorithm (Matrix science, USA) was used to identify peptide sequences present in the protein sequence database. RESULTS: RWL-1 showed significant growth in media supplemented with 2 and 3.5% methanol, when compared with other concentrations. Mass spectroscopy analysis revealed that RWL-1 utilizes methanol efficiently as a carbon source. In the presence of methanol, RWL-1 produced significantly higher levels of IAA but lower levels of ABA, when compared with the control. Further, enzymatic antioxidants and functional amino acids were significantly up-regulated, with predominant expression of glutamic acid and alanine. Nano-liquid chromatography, quadrupole time-of-flight analysis, and quantitative analysis of methanol-treated bacterial cells showed expression of eight different types of proteins, including detoxification proteins, unrecognized and unclassified enzymes with antioxidant properties, proteases, metabolism enzymes, ribosomal proteins, antioxidant proteins, chaperones, and heat shock proteins. CONCLUSION: Results demonstrate that RWL-1 can significantly enhance its growth by utilizing methanol, and could produce phytohormones when growing in methanol-supplemented media, with increased expression of specific proteins and different biochemicals. These results will be useful in devising strategies for utilizing methylotrophic bacterial endophytes as alternative promoters of plant growth. Understanding RWL-1 ability to utilize methanol. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Isotretinoin is a notorious teratogen otherwise used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Some countries, including those in North America and the European Union, implemented the pregnancy prevention program (PPP); however, no PPP has yet been established in South Korea. So the aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of pregnant women exposed to isotretinoin among the callers of the Korean Mother Safe Counseling Center. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study. We evaluated the demographic characteristics, obstetric history, and isotretinoin exposure of pregnant women based on the mother safe registry from April 2010 to July 2016. RESULTS: Among 22,374 callers, 650 (2.9%) pregnant women were exposed to isotretinoin. The mean age was 29.0±4.4 years in the isotretinoin-exposed group and 32.0±4.2 years in the unexposed group (P<0.001). Moreover, the incidence of pregnancies within 30 days after isotretinoin discontinuation or during isotretinoin intake was 78.9% (513/650). The median duration of isotretinoin exposure was 18 (1-4,231) days. Furthermore, from 2011 to 2015, the incidence of isotretinoin exposure was 2.9±1.2 pregnancies per 10,000 births in South Korea. CONCLUSION: Approximately 80% of pregnant women are exposed to isotretinoin within the recommended 30 days of contraception or during pregnancy. Therefore, the PPP has to be established in South Korea.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that represents a major cause of death in many countries. AD is characterized by profound memory loss, disruptions in thinking and reasoning, and changes in personality and behavior followed by malfunctions in various bodily systems. Although AD was first identified over 100 years ago, and tremendous efforts have been made to cure the disease, the precise mechanisms underlying the onset of AD remain unclear. The recent development of next-generation sequencing tools and bioinformatics has enabled us to investigate the role of genetics in the pathogenesis of AD. In this review, we discuss novel discoveries in this area, including the results of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) that have implicated a number of novel genes as risk factors, as well as the identification of epigenetic regulators strongly associated with the onset and progression of AD. We also review how genetic risk factors may interact with age-associated, progressive decreases in cognitive function in patients with AD.
