ABSTRACT

A procedure is described for the purification of C-reactive protein (CRP) from human serum. The methods described take advantage of the barium sulfate adsorption property of CRP and the unique biophysical property of CRP migration during electrophoresis in agarose gels containing Ca2+. The purified CRP had an apparant molecular weight of 28,000 as determined by migration of the reduced protein during SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The described procedure has the advantage of not requiring either molecular sieve or affinity chromatography for purification of homogenous CRP from human sera.

ABSTRACT

The level of 21 plasma proteins was followed in Hepatitis A for two months after onset of icterus. The mean concentration of alpha 1-antitrypsin, orosomucoid, haptoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP) and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin increased uniformely during the first week of hepatitis A. Thus, they differ from that of inoculation hepatitis earlier described. The mean curve for IgM was higher in hepatitis A than the corresponding results for inoculation hepatitis during the first week of illness, but because of great inter-individual differences in concentrations IgM determinations can not be used to discriminate between the two diseases in a given case. IgA levels were slightly increased early in hepatitis A but no change in IgG levels was observed. Prealbumin was the best mirror of the patients' recovery or deterioration.

ABSTRACT

The antibody response to the rabies human diploid cell strain vaccine was compared after pre-exposure immunization with 0.1 ml intradermal (i.d.) and 1.0 ml subcutaneous (s.c.) vaccination. After primary immunization, 2 doses of vaccine 1 month apart, all vaccinees in the two groups had antibody titers detectable by ELISA. However, the mean antibody titer after the 0.1 ml i.d. doses (5.9 EU/ml) was half of what was obtained after the 1.0 ml s.c. doses (12.2 EU/ml). Likewise, though all vaccinees responded on the 1-year booster dose the mean antibody level after i.d. vaccination (8 EU/ml) was 2.5 times lower than after 1.0 ml s.c. dose (21.5 EU/ml). At 1 year 70% of the vaccinees had detectable antibody levels irrespective of vaccination route. A few individuals responded to one of their i.d. doses with only minor titer rises which is supposed to be due to inadvertent s.c. injection of the i.d. dose.

ABSTRACT

A case of Q fever in a 56-year-old man is reported. The patient had visited Mallorca six months prior to the present disease. Except for that he had not been outside Sweden for several years, thus being the first known case of Q fever acquired in this country.

ABSTRACT

A high titer of hepatitis B antigen (HBsAg) was found in a patient with acute hepatitis B infection complicated by bone marrow aplasia. A possible antimitotic effect of HBsAg as an aetiological factor of the aplasia in this patient is discussed.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of plasma CRP during the febrile response after the first injection of penicillin was followed in 10 patients with early syphilis. An increase in CRP was noted after 12 hours, with a maximum after 24 hours. The appearance of this acute phase protein could not be correlated to cutaneous reaction, increased body temperature or leukocytosis, nor were baseline values of CRP correlated to clinical or serological activity of the infection. Patients with high levels of CRP prior to treatment suffered the most intense systemic reactions. No activation of the complement system during the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction was detected from sequential determinations of C3, C4 and properdin.

ABSTRACT

Properdin in normal serum was measured by electroimmunoassay (EIA) and single radial immunodiffusion (SRID). Fresh sera gave much lower properdin values in SRID in gels containing Mg2+ ions. Storage of sera at 4 degrees C resulted in a gradual increase of the properdin values measured by SRID but not of those of the EIA. With 10 mM of EDTA in the gels no difference between the properdin values obtained by the different methods was found. Evidence is presented that immunodiffusion values of properdin might be affected by precipitation of a C3-properdin complex in gels containing Mg2+ ions after the activation of the properdin system by agarose.
