ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Globally, the number of children/adolescents exposed to HIV but uninfected (HIV-exposed uninfected, HEU) is growing. The HEU outcomes: population-evaluation and screening strategies study was designed to provide population-level evidence of the impact of HIV and recent antiretroviral therapy regimen exposure on neurodevelopmental, hearing and mental health outcomes from infancy to adolescence. PARTICIPANTS: The study includes a prospective mother-infant cohort and cross-sectional child/youth-caregiver cohorts conducted in Kenya.Between 2021 and 2022, the study enrolled 2000 mother-infant pairs (1000 HEU and 1000 HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU)) for longitudinal follow-up. Infants were eligible if they were aged 4-10 weeks and healthy. Mothers were eligible if their HIV status was known and were ≥18 years. Study visits are 6 monthly until the child reaches age 3 years.Cross-sectional cohorts spanning ages 3-18 years started enrolment in 2022. Target enrolment is 4400 children/youth (4000 HEU and 400 HUU). Children and youth are eligible if they are HIV negative, maternal HIV status and timing of diagnosis is known, and caregivers are ≥18 years.Data on infant/child/youth growth, neurodevelopment, mental health, morbidity and hearing are collected at enrolment using standardised tools. Dry blood spots samples are collected for telomere length assessment at baseline and yearly for the longitudinal cohort. Growth z-scores, neurodevelopmental scores, telomere length and prevalence of developmental and hearing problems will be compared between HEU/HUU populations. FINDINGS TO DATE: Full cohort enrolment for the longitudinal cohort is complete and participants are in follow-up. At 1 year of age, comparing HEU to HUU neurodevelopment using the Malawi developmental assessment tool, we found that HEU infants had higher language scores and comparable scores in fine motor, gross motor and social scores. The cross-sectional cohort has enrolled over 2000 participants and recruitment is ongoing. FUTURE PLANS: Longitudinal cohort follow-up and enrolment to the cross-sectional study will be completed in June 2024.

ABSTRACT

Physical disability is a common component of post-intensive care syndrome, but the importance of musculoskeletal health in this population is currently unknown. We aimed to determine the musculoskeletal health state of intensive care unit survivors and assess its relationship with health-related quality of life; employment; and psychological and physical function. We conducted a multicentre prospective cohort study of adults admitted to intensive care for > 48 h without musculoskeletal trauma or neurological insult. Patients were followed up 6 months after admission where musculoskeletal health state was measured using the validated Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire score. Of the 254 participants, 150 (59%) had a musculoskeletal problem and only 60 (24%) had received physiotherapy after discharge. Functional Comorbidity Index, Clinical Frailty Scale, duration of intensive care unit stay and prone positioning were all independently associated with worse musculoskeletal health. Musculoskeletal health state moderately correlated with quality of life, rs = 0.499 (95%CI 0.392-0.589); anxiety, rs = -0.433 (95%CI -0.538 to -0.315); and depression, rs = -0.537 (95%CI -0.631 to -0.434) (all p < 0.001). Patients with a musculoskeletal problem were less physically active than those without a problem (median (IQR [range]) number of 30 min physical activity sessions per week 1 (0-3.25 [0-7]) vs. 4 (1-7 [0-7]), p < 0.001, respectively). This study found that musculoskeletal health problems were common after intensive care unit stay. However, we observed that < 25% of patients received physical rehabilitation after discharge home. Our work has identified potential high-risk groups to target in future interventional studies.

ABSTRACT

Background: Thirty-four million children globally have disabling hearing loss, with the highest prevalence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Early identification and management is crucial, yet barriers to screening and treatment of hearing loss are extensive in LMICs. Unaddressed hearing loss negatively impacts individuals and communities. The WHO's 2021 World Report on Hearing urges the development of Ear and Hearing Care (EHC) programs to improve access to all aspects of care, including screening, diagnostics, management, and developmental support. A joint Nairobi- and Seattle-based group convened in 2021 to discuss strategies for program development in Kenya, as presented in this paper. Findings: Developing a national EHC program must include the necessary support services for a child with a diagnosed hearing loss, while simultaneously promoting engagement of family, community, and healthcare workers. Existing government and healthcare system policies and priorities can be leveraged for EHC programming. Strategies for success include strengthening connections between policymakers at national, county, and municipal levels and local champions for the EHC agenda, with a concurrent focus on policy, early detection and intervention, habilitation, and family-centered care. Updates to health policy and funding to support the accessibility of services and equipment should focus on leveraging national healthcare coverage for hearing technologies and services, strengthening referral pathways, training to bolster the workforce, and metrics for monitoring and evaluation. Additional strategies to support forward progress include strategic engagement of partners and leveraging local partners for phased scale-up. Conclusions and Recommendations: Recommendations to strengthen EHC within the Kenyan health system include concurrent leverage of existing health policies and priorities, partner engagement, and strengthening referral pathways, monitoring and evaluation, and training. These strategies may be generalized to other countries too.

ABSTRACT

Coronary arteriovenous fistulas are an abnormal conduit between a coronary artery and another cardiovascular lumen, without an intervening capillary bed. The reported prevalence is 0.002-0.3%. Physiologic consequences such as congestive heart failure, coronary steal phenomenon and fistula aneurysm formation and rupture are possible. There are limited reports of symptomatic coronary arteriovenous fistulas in association with pregnancy. We describe a 19-year-old woman with symptomatic left circumflex artery to coronary sinus fistula, terminating into a large exophytic varix in the right atrium, presenting for an elective caesarean section at 37 weeks gestational age. Our anaesthetic management strategy aimed to optimise myocardial perfusion, maintain euvolemia, avoid right ventricular obstruction from exophytic varix and avoid sympathetic stimulation or sudden increases in pulmonary vascular resistance. A slowly titrated epidural was used as the primary anaesthetic. Our patient tolerated the procedure well and was discharged home on postoperative day two. Understanding of the potential physiologic consequence of coronary arteriovenous fistulas, and interaction with the physiologic changes of pregnancy and delivery, are essential for the management of these cases.

The breeding soundness examination (BSE) is universally promoted as an important management tool, but there continues to be a level of inconsistency in its performance. A complete bull BSE consists of a thorough physical examination including internal and external reproductive tract, measurement of the circumference of the scrotum and evaluation of individual sperm motility and morphology.

ABSTRACT

Static magnetic stimulation (SMS) is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation that alters neural activity and induces neural plasticity that outlasts the period of stimulation. This can modify corticospinal excitability or motor behaviours, suggesting that SMS may alter the intrinsic excitability of neurons. In mammalian neurons, the axon initial segment (AIS) is the site of action potential initiation and undergoes structural plasticity (changes in length and position from the soma) as a homeostatic mechanism to counteract chronic changes in neuronal activity. We investigated whether the chronic application of SMS (6 and 48 h, 0.5 T) induces structural AIS plasticity in postnatally derived primary cortical neurons. Following 6 h of SMS, we observed a shortening in mean AIS length compared to control, that persisted 24 h post stimulation. In contrast, 48 h of SMS induced an immediate distal shift that persisted 24 h post-stimulation. Pharmacological blockade of voltage gated L/T-type calcium channels during stimulation did not prevent SMS-induced AIS structural plasticity. Our findings provide the foundation to expand the use of chronic SMS as a non-invasive method to promote AIS plasticity.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Predictors of neurodevelopment among children who are HIV-exposed uninfected (CHEU) are poorly understood. METHODS: Mothers with and without HIV and their children were enrolled during 6-week postnatal care visits across seven sites in Kenya between March 2021 and June 2022. Infant neurodevelopment was assessed using the Malawi Developmental Assessment Tool, including social, language, fine motor and gross motor domains. We used multivariate linear mixed effects models to identify associations between 1-year neurodevelopment scores, HIV and antiretroviral therapy (ART) exposures, and household factors, adjusted for potential confounders and clustered by the site. RESULTS: At 1-year evaluation, CHEU (n = 709) and children who are HIV-unexposed uninfected (CHUU) (n = 715) had comparable median age (52 weeks) and sex distribution (49% vs. 52% female). Mothers living with HIV were older (31 vs. 27 years), had lower education (50% vs. 26% primary) and were more likely to be report moderate-to-severe food insecurity (26% vs. 9%) (p < 0.01 for all). Compared to CHUU, CHEU had higher language scores (adjusted coeff: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.39) and comparable social, fine and gross motor scores. Among all children, preterm birth was associated with lower gross motor scores (adjusted coeff: -1.38, 95% CI: -2.05, -0.71), food insecurity was associated with lower social scores (adjusted coeff: -0.37, 95% CI: -0.73, -0.01) and maternal report of intimate partner violence (IPV) was associated with lower fine motor (adjusted coeff: -0.76, 95% CI: -1.40, -0.13) and gross motor scores (adjusted coeff: -1.07, 95% CI: -1.81, -0.33). Among CHEU, in utero efavirenz (EFV) exposure during pregnancy was associated with lower gross motor scores compared to dolutegravir (DTG) exposure (adjusted coeff: -0.51, 95% CI: -1.01, -0.03). Lower fine and gross motor scores were also associated with having a single or widowed mother (adjusted coeff: -0.45, 95% CI: -0.87, -0.03) or a deceased or absent father (adjusted coeff: -0.81, 95% CI: -1.58, -0.05), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Biologic and social factors were associated with child neurodevelopment. Despite socio-demographic differences between CHEU and CHUU, 1-year neurodevelopment was similar. Addressing IPV and food insecurity may provide benefits regardless of maternal HIV status. DTG use was associated with higher neurodevelopmental scores in CHEU, compared to EFV regimens, potentially contributing to a lack of neurodevelopmental difference between CHEU and CHUU.

INTRODUCTION: Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) and selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR) are common complications in monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) pregnancies. The Diffusion-rElaxation Combined Imaging for Detailed Placental Evaluation (DECIDE) model, a placental-specific model, separates the T2 values of the fetal and maternal blood from the background tissue and estimates the fetal blood oxygen saturation. This study investigates diffusion and relaxation differences in uncomplicated MCDA pregnancies and MCDA pregnancies complicated by TTTS and sFGR in mid-pregnancy. METHODS: This prospective monocentric cohort study included uncomplicated MCDA pregnancies and pregnancies complicated by TTTS and sFGR. We performed MRI with conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and combined relaxometry - DWI-intravoxel incoherent motion. DECIDE analysis was used to quantify different parameters within the placenta related to the fetal, placental, and maternal compartments. RESULTS: We included 99 pregnancies, of which 46 were uncomplicated, 12 were complicated by sFGR and 41 by TTTS. Conventional DWI did not find differences between or within cohorts. On DECIDE imaging, fetoplacental oxygen saturation was significantly lower in the smaller member of sFGR (p = 0.07) and in both members of TTTS (p = 0.01 and p = 0.004) compared to the uncomplicated pairs. Additionally, average T2 relaxation time was significantly lower in the smaller twin of the sFGR (p = 0.004) compared to the uncomplicated twins (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: Multicompartment functional MRI showed significant differences in several MRI parameters between the placenta of uncomplicated MCDA pregnancies and those complicated by sFGR and TTTS in mid-pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Global disparities in HIV infection, particularly among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), indicate the importance of exploring the multi-level processes that shape HIV's spread. We used Complex Systems Theory and the PRISMA guidelines to conduct a systematic review of 63 global reviews to understand how HIV is socially patterned among GBMSM. The purpose was to conduct a thematic analysis of the reviews to (1) synthesize the multi-level risk factors of HIV risk, (2) categorize risk across the socioecological model, and (3) develop a conceptual model that visualizes the interrelated factors that shape GBMSMS's HIV "risk." RECENT FINDINGS: We included 49 studies of high and moderate quality studies. Results indicated that GBMSM's HIV risk stems from the individual, interpersonal, and structural levels of the socioecological model. We identified a few themes that shape GBMSM's risk of HIV infection related to biomedical prevention methods; sexual and sex-seeking behaviors; behavioral prevention methods; individual-level characteristics and syndemic infections; lived experiences and interpersonal relationships; country-level income; country-level HIV prevalence; and structural stigma. The multi-level factors, in tandem, serve to perpetuate GBMSM's risk of HIV infection globally. The amalgamation of our thematic analyses from our systematic reviews of reviews suggests that the risk of HIV infection operates in an emergent, dynamic, and complex nature across multiple levels of the socioecological model. Applying complex systems theory indicates how multilevel factors create a dynamic and reinforcing system of HIV risk among GBMSM.

INTRODUCTION: This study identified the referral source for urgent short-stay admissions (SSAs) and compared characteristics of children with SSA stratified by different referral sources. METHODS: Routinely acquired data from urgent admissions to Scottish hospitals during 2015-2017 were linked to data held by the three referral sources: emergency department (ED), out-of-hours (OOH) service and general practice (GP). RESULTS: There were 171 039 admissions including 92 229 (54%) SSAs. Only 171 (19%) of all of Scotland's GP practices contributed data. Among the subgroup of 10 588 SSAs where GP data were available (11% all SSA), there was contact with the following referral source on the day of admission: only ED, 1853 (18%); only GP, 3384 (32%); and only OOH, 823 (8%). Additionally, 2165 (20%) had contact with more than one referral source, and 1037 (10%) had contact with referral source(s) on the day before the admission. When all 92 229 SSAs were considered, those with an ED referrer were more likely to be for older children, of white ethnicity, living in more deprived communities and diagnosed with asthma, convulsions or croup. The odds ratio for an SSA for a given condition differed by referral source and ranged from 0.07 to 1.9 (with reference to ED referrals). CONCLUSION: This study yielded insights and potential limitations regarding data linkage in a healthcare setting. Data coverage, particularly from primary care, needs to improve further. Evidence from data linkage studies can inform future intervention designed to provide safe integrated care pathways.

Introduction Gaelic football and hurling are the most commonly played amateur sports in Ireland with elite level athletes participating at inter-county level. Over time, the intensity and frequency of inter-county training has approached levels of professional sports. Previous studies have not assessed differences in hip and groin injury between eras. We aimed to examine differences in hip and groin injury, incidence of surgery and Hip and Groin Outcome Scores between elite GAA players of different eras and duration of intercountry career. Methods Members of the squads from the 1976, 1986, 1996 and 2006 hurling and football All-Ireland Finals provided data on age starting intercounty career and previous hip and groin injury and surgery. 372 players were surveyed in total. The hip and groin outcome score (HAGOS), a validated questionnaire assessing hip and groin problems suffered was also assessed. Results There were significant differences in four of the six HAGOS categories between eras with lower scores in 2006 group and in those who were younger starting their intercounty career. In addition, those with younger start and those who played in more recent times had higher rates of groin surgery (23.9% of 2006 cohort, N = 17). As expected, older players had higher rates of total hip replacement (19.7% of the 1976 cohort, N = 12). Conclusion This study highlights the influence of early playing career at elite level on hip and groin injury and that those playing in more modern times had higher incidence of groin surgery and lower HAGOS scores.

1. The following experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of nonanoic acid (NA) in broilers and laying hens, at practical levels as a flavouring in complete feed.2. In the first experiment, 1100, one-day-old Ross 308 chicks, half male and female, were randomly assigned to 50 floor pens containing 22 chicks each. Chicks were fed one of five treatment diets containing either 0 (control), 100, 300, 500 or 1,000 mg NA/kg complete feed for 42 days.3. The NA treatment had no effect on ADFI, but there was a linear relationship with ADG and FCR. No differences were observed in blood parameters or tissue pathology among treatment groups.4. In a second study, 150 Hyline hens aged 24 weeks old were randomly assigned to 50 pens containing three birds each. Laying hens were fed one of five treatment diets containing 0 (control), 100, 300, 500 or 1,000 mg NA/kg complete feed for 56 days.5. Treatment with NA has no effect on live weight, ADFI or egg production in laying hens, and there were no observed changes in tissue pathology.6. The results supported the toleration of NA in broilers or layers at dietary levels of up to 1,000 mg/kg.

ABSTRACT

The objectives were to examine melatonin-mediated changes in temporal uterine blood flow (UBF), vaginal temperatures (VTs), and fetal morphometrics in 54 commercial Brangus heifers (Fall, n = 29; Summer, n = 25) during compromised pregnancy. At day 160 of gestation, heifers were assigned to one of the four treatments consisting of adequately fed (ADQ-CON; 100% National Research Council [NRC]; n = 13), global nutrient restricted (RES-CON; 60% NRC; n =13), and ADQ or RES supplemented with 20 mg/d of melatonin (ADQ-MEL, n = 13; RES-MEL, n = 15). In the morning (0500 hours; AM) and afternoon (1300 hours; PM) of day 220 of gestation, UBF was determined via Doppler ultrasonography, while temperature data loggers attached to progesterone-free controlled internal drug releases were used to record VTs. At day 240 of gestation, heifers underwent cesarean sections for fetal removal and morphometrics determination. The UBF and VT data were analyzed using repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA), while the morphometrics was analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS. Seasons were analyzed separately. In Fall, a nutrition by treatment interaction was observed, where the RES-CON heifers exhibited reduced total UBF compared with ADQ-CON (5.67 ± 0.68 vs. 7.97 ± 0.54 L/min; P = 0.039). In Summer, MEL heifers exhibited increased total UBF compared with the CON counterparts (8.16 ± 0.73 vs. 6.00 ± 0.70 L/min; P = 0.048). Moreover, there was a nutrition by treatment by time interaction in VT for Fall and Summer heifers (P ≤ 0.005). In Fall, all groups had decreased VT in the morning compared with the afternoon (P < 0.05). Whereas, in Summer, VT increased for ADQ-CON and RES-CON (P < 0.0001) from morning to afternoon, the ADQ-MEL and RES-MEL remained constant throughout the day (P = 0.648). Furthermore, the RES-MEL-PM exhibited decreased VT compared with ADQ-CON-PM (38.91 ± 0.09 vs. 39.26 ± 0.09 °C; P = 0.018). Lastly, in Fall, a main effect of nutrition was observed on fetal weights, where the RES dams had fetuses with decreased body weight when compared with ADQ (24.08 ± 0.62 vs. 26.57 ± 0.64 kg; P = 0.0087). In Summer, a nutrition by treatment interaction was observed on fetal weights where the RES-CON dams had fetuses with reduced weight when compared with ADQ-CON and RES-MEL (P < 0.05). In summary, nutrient restriction decreased UBF and melatonin supplementation increased UBF depending on the season. Additionally, melatonin appeared to decrease VT and rescue fetal weights when supplemented in the Summer.

OBJECTIVES: To classify patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) by pattern of physical activity and determine the clinical associations of each type. METHODS: 579 out of 641 participants with CFS from the PACE (Pacing, graded Activity, Cognitive behavioural therapy: a randomised Evaluation) trial wore an Actiwatch (accelerometer) for between 3 and 7 days before any trial treatments, which provided a measure of physical activity. Participants' activity was categorised into one of four patterns (pervasively inactive, pervasively active, boom and bust, or indeterminate) primarily using a priori definitions of activity. Clinical associations were sought with each group using an exploratory logistic regression with the indeterminate activity group being the reference group. RESULTS: 124 (21%) of the participants were classified as pervasively inactive, 65 (11%) as pervasively active, 172 (30%) showed a 'boom and bust' pattern of activity, and 218 (38%) had an indeterminate pattern. Pervasively inactive patients were more physically disabled, those in the pervasively active group were more anxious, and those in the boom and bust group had more sleep disturbance. CONCLUSION: We were able to classify patients with CFS into groups by their daytime activity pattern. The different patterns of activity were associated with important clinical variables, suggesting that they might be helpful in determining prognosis and targeting treatments. These associations need replication.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections and is particularly prevalent following colorectal surgery. It is associated with an increase in patient morbidity and healthcare costs. SSI is difficult to monitor as it frequently presents after discharge from hospital, especially if enhanced recovery programmes are in place. AIM: To develop an effective method for measuring patient-reported 30-day SSI in patients undergoing colorectal resection. To implement a new care bundle capable of delivering a sustainable reduction in SSI. METHODS: The Public Health England SSI surveillance questionnaire was used. Several data collection methods were tested including postal and telephone-based systems. A new SSI bundle was introduced in our centre incorporating four evidence-based interventions: 2% chlorhexidine skin preparation; repeat-dose antibiotics after 4 h; dual-ring wound protectors; and triclosan-coated sutures for wound closure. System changes were introduced to ensure that the change was sustainable. FINDINGS: The most reliable method of measuring patient-reported SSI was found to be postal questionnaire with telephone calls made to non-responders. Response rates to the SSI surveillance questionnaire were consistently >75%. Introduction of the new care bundle produced a significant reduction in SSI from 20% to 10% (P ≤ 0.0001) which has been sustained for six years. CONCLUSION: This is a reliable method for measuring 30-day patient-reported SSI rates. The introduction of this new care bundle has halved the rate of SSI from 20% to 10%.

ABSTRACT

Measures describing movement of the center of pressure (CoP) are frequently used to characterize postural control. Estimates of CoP often focus on forces that individuals exert in a single plane through the feet (standing on force plates). However, balance may also be supported by forces other than those developed at the feet, especially when walkers, handrails, and other aids are used. In these cases, it is common to neglect the contributions of handheld supports. Here, we derive and apply equations for an extended CoP that incorporates handhold forces. We then examine the influence of CoP definition (i.e., including or ignoring handhold forces) on common metrics (path length; RMS and maximum excursion; average and maximum velocity) for 12 younger adults with a handrail located lateral to the participants' dominant hand. Participants attempted balance recovery in response to a range of small, medium and large forward and backward platform translations. Significant interactions between perturbation magnitude and CoP definition were found for most metrics. Notably, the interaction of CoP definition and perturbation magnitude significantly affected path length (p-values < 0.001). Post-hoc analyses revealed larger CoP path length when handrail forces were incorporated in CoP estimates compared to ignoring handrail forces at medium (backward: 59.9 vs. 19.0% height; forward: 70.5 vs 22.4% height) and large perturbation magnitudes (backward: 69.9 vs 22.4% height; forward: 103.5 vs 24.6% height). Incorporation of hand forces in CoP calculations can present a different view of postural balance control than relying on a feet-only CoP. This measure could be useful in assessing balance control tasks that involve the use of handrails or hand-held mobility devices.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Environmental variation in the amount of resources available to populations challenge individuals to optimize the allocation of those resources to key fitness functions. This coordination of resource allocation relative to resource availability is commonly attributed to key nutrient sensing gene pathways in laboratory model organisms, chiefly the insulin/TOR signaling pathway. However, the genetic basis of diet-induced variation in gene expression is less clear. RESULTS: To describe the natural genetic variation underlying nutrient-dependent differences, we used an outbred panel derived from a multiparental population, the Drosophila Synthetic Population Resource. We analyzed RNA sequence data from multiple female tissue samples dissected from flies reared in three nutritional conditions: high sugar (HS), dietary restriction (DR), and control (C) diets. A large proportion of genes in the experiment (19.6% or 2471 genes) were significantly differentially expressed for the effect of diet, and 7.8% (978 genes) for the effect of the interaction between diet and tissue type (LRT, Padj. < 0.05). Interestingly, we observed similar patterns of gene expression relative to the C diet, in the DR and HS treated flies, a response likely reflecting diet component ratios. Hierarchical clustering identified 21 robust gene modules showing intra-modularly similar patterns of expression across diets, all of which were highly significant for diet or diet-tissue interaction effects (FDR Padj. < 0.05). Gene set enrichment analysis for different diet-tissue combinations revealed a diverse set of pathways and gene ontology (GO) terms (two-sample t-test, FDR < 0.05). GO analysis on individual co-expressed modules likewise showed a large number of terms encompassing many cellular and nuclear processes (Fisher exact test, Padj. < 0.01). Although a handful of genes in the IIS/TOR pathway including Ilp5, Rheb, and Sirt2 showed significant elevation in expression, many key genes such as InR, chico, most insulin peptide genes, and the nutrient-sensing pathways were not observed. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that a more diverse network of pathways and gene networks mediate the diet response in our population. These results have important implications for future studies focusing on diet responses in natural populations.

ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate the kinematic and kinetic variables that change in patients with athletic groin pain (AGP) after a successful exercise intervention. The kinematic and kinetic measures of subjects with AGP (n = 65) that completed a lateral hurdle hop, pre and post an exercise rehabilitation program were compared to a control group of matched uninjured individuals (n = 50). Analysis of Characterising Phases was used to identify differences in kinematic and kinetic measures between the groups. AGP subjects returned to pain-free participation in sport in a median time of 9.14 weeks (5.14-29.0). In total 18 different biomechanical variables were significantly different between the AGP group and the uninjured group pre-rehabilitation. Of these, seven variables were no longer significantly different between the AGP group post-rehabilitation and the uninjured group. These seven variables may represent the factors most related to return to play in this cohort and are potential targets for rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

Extensive research in the business and organisational literature links teamwork to enhanced productivity and employee job satisfaction. Good teamwork capability is also a highly regarded graduate attribute linked to employability. This study explored desirable teamwork attributes for veterinary technology graduates in Australia, by surveying veterinarians, veterinary technology graduates, veterinary nurses, clients and academics. Respondents highlighted the importance of seven attributes sourced from the cross-disciplinary teamwork literature-'flexibility' (in approach to work), 'agreeableness', being 'cooperative', 'socially sensitive and perceptive', 'conscientiousness', being 'accepting of others' and 'sharing professional values'. The majority in each stakeholder group viewed all attributes important for teamwork concurring with findings in other fields. Few differences were found between and within groups with veterinarians and academics rating 'conscientiousness' higher than others and female clients placing more importance on relational attributes compared to male clients. Thematic analysis of an open-ended item asking the veterinary health care groups, and veterinary academics, to define teamwork generated nine themes centred on: collaboration, goals and outcomes, sharing values, relationships, diversity, communication, task-orientation, personal attributes, and workplace culture. This study illuminates an interprofessional perspective on veterinary teamwork. Results will be useful for veterinary technology, veterinary nursing and veterinary educators when developing a curriculum for interprofessional teamwork to enhance team performance, employability and, ultimately, the quality of veterinary services.
