ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between spiritual well-being and post-traumatic growth in solid organ transplant patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 366 patients who presented to the organ transplantation polyclinic of a university hospital between September 2021 and February 2022 in Turkey. The mean Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory and Spiritual Well-Being Scale scores of solid organ transplant patients were 81.33 ± 20.28 and 37.18 ± 8.69, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between post-traumatic growth and spiritual well-being. According to linear regression analysis, spiritual well-being, gender, marital status, transplanted organ, donor type, and previous mental disorders were statistically significant predictive factors that affected post-traumatic growth. Spiritual well-being was an important variable that affected post-traumatic growth in solid organ transplant patients. Therefore, healthcare providers can provide individualized psychosocial-spiritual care and counseling services that increase post-traumatic growth in patients after organ transplantation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in serum levels of S100ß, neuron-specific enolase, glial fibrillary acidic protein in living donors and recipients after kidney transplantation. METHODS: We enrolled 56 patients into the study. Of these, 27 underwent donor nephrectomy (group D), and the remaining 29 underwent kidney transplantation (recipient, group R). Neuromarkers were measured in samples obtained before the procedure, on postoperative day 7, and at 1 month postoperatively. RESULTS: Postoperative kidney functions were impaired in patients who underwent living donor nephrectomy compared with their preoperative levels (P < .001), although no significant difference was observed in their neuromarkers. The postoperative delirium rating scale was also impaired after living donor nephrectomy compared with preoperative levels (P < .05). Postoperative kidney functions were improved (P < .001), and a progressive decrease in neuromarker levels (P < .05) was observed in kidney transplant recipients compared with their preoperative levels. Linear regression analysis showed a significant correlation between neuron-specific enolase, glial fibrillary acidic protein levels and kidney functions in recipients. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that neuron-specific enolase and glial fibrillary acidic protein levels decrease in kidney transplant recipients and do not change in donors. This result indicated that there is no evidence of neurotoxicity in either recipients and donors in kidney transplantation.

ABSTRACT

Kidney transplant is the leading treatment method for patients with recent renal failure in terms of quality of life, cost, and survival. After transplant, rejection, infection, cardiovascular diseases, malignancies, immunosuppressive therapy failure, and psychologic problems may occur. Posttransplant nursing care is as important as pretransplant nursing care in terms of enhancing quality of life, preventing complications, and providing necessary changes to treatment. In this report, we presented ways to increase quality of care after transplant and outlined standardized nursing care to reduce work and time loads by ensuring integrative and systematic approaches of nurses.
