ABSTRACT

Reactive changes in human pleura were studied 6 hrs, 1, 3 and 7 days after artificial pneumothorax. Thoracoscopically, grey-white deposits were seen which consisted of disorderly accumulation of monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils and fibrin during the first hours. Later (the 3rd and the 7th days), the layer was observed formed of histiocyte-like cells and few multinuclear cells. The membrane on the pleura surface most likely represents a culture of monocyte cells. Morphologically, reactive eosinophilic pleuritis by the 7th day has a similarity with histiocytosis X; this may be the source of error diagnosis at the biopsy examination. Wrong interpretation of changes as a proliferative process, neoplasia or pleura tuberculosis is also possible.

ABSTRACT

4 observations of rare lung tumours are described: one case of "sclerosing haemangioma" (SH), two cases of "intravascular sclerosing bronchioloalveolar tumour" (ISBT) and one case of asymptomatic disseminated lung lesion considered as angiosarcomatous variant of ISBT with a stroma amyloidosis (it differed from classical ISBT in former observations). Although the necessity of differential diagnosis of SH and ISBT is indicated in the literature, the comparative study of these tumours shows them to be completely different morphologically.

ABSTRACT

When levamisol was added to the antituberculosis therapy of rabbits with destructive pulmonary tuberculosis, intensive infiltration of the zone of lesions with polymorphonuclear cells and their accumulation in cavities, increased numbers of giant multinuclear cells, "macrophage" transformation of epithelioid cells were observed; the caverns had one-layer connective tissue wall or underwent scarring. In treatment with levamisol alone the same morphological features were observed, however, without complete disappearance of the signs of specific inflammation and abacillation in all the animals. The animals given antituberculosis therapy alone retained the signs of specific inflammation despite abacillation. Changes in inflammation morphology under the influence of levamisol characterize it as a histomodulator and indicate (considering cholinergic and thymomimetic effect of levamisol) a difference in biochemical and immunological mechanisms of chronic specific and acute nonspecific inflammation.

ABSTRACT

A description of vitally unrecognized cryptococcal meningitis and tumour-like cryptococcosis of the adrenals is presented. Comparison of the results of various stainings for degeneratively changes and phagocytized fungi suggests that cryptococci in histological sections should be stained by Zihl-Nilsen's method (methylene blue and basic fuchsin).

ABSTRACT

Bronchi of the lungs resected for tuberculosis were examined histotopographically, morphometrically and immunohistologically. The greatest number of cells in the mucous membrane of the bronchi and the greatest extent of hypertrophy of bronchial glands were found in the stage of progression of lung tuberculosis, while normalization of the quantitative values-in the stage of remission. In the stage of progression the cellular infiltrate was characterized by marked pyroninophilia, abundance of blast cells and antigen specificity; when the process stabilises, plasmocytes are predominant in the infiltrate. In chronic tuberculosis, lymphonodules are frequently found in the bronchial wall. The above morphological signs of hypertrophic bronchitis are regarded as manifestations of immunity reactions (cellular, humoral, secretory) induced by penetration into the bronchi of the antigen-containing detritis from destructive foci.

ABSTRACT

A post-mortem study of a case of plasma cell granuloma with obstructive polyposis of the major bronchi and foci of lesions of a various degree of maturation in the lungs, lymph nodes and kidneys in a woman aged 39 is described. The morphological peculiarities of plasma cell gronuloma justify its differentiation plasmocytoma, and also serve as the grounds for considering it as a systemic disease associated with reticuloendothelial cells proliferation.
