ABSTRACT

Glomus tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms composed of cells resembling the glomus body. They are most frequently seen in subungual regions but have been reported to arise in almost every anatomic location. Malignant glomus tumors, also called glomangiosarcomas, of cutaneous origin are exceedingly rare with only 47 reported cases. The genetic alterations that lead to the development of cutaneous malignant glomus tumors are not well understood. Small studies report glomus tumors with mutations in glomulin (GLMN), NF1, BRAF, NOTCH, PDGFRB, KRAS, and SMARCB1. These mutations have mostly been studied in deep or visceral glomus tumors. We report a case of a cutaneous malignant glomus tumor with a CCND3 point mutation identified on next generation sequencing, without any of the previously described genetic mutations. CCND3 mutations that cause cyclin D3 amplification may prove to be targets for CDK4/6 inhibitors in the treatment of malignant glomus tumors.

ABSTRACT

We report the unique case of a patient with previously proven non-functional PanNET and Graves' disease with thyroid nodules. The patient had elevated intranodular calcitonin, but no MTC or c-cell hyperplasia on thyroidectomy. They were found to have calcitonin secreting PanNET. This case presents a false-positive intranodular calcitonin.

ABSTRACT

While plastics play an important role in the safety, shelf-life, and affordability of many foods, their mismanagement as waste presents a serious environmental problem. In 2019, governments in Canada and globally were poised to take legislative action to curb the use of single-use plastics, with strong public support. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has since disrupted those initiatives as well as the public sentiment underlying them. The aim of our study is to measure changes in Canadian consumers' attitudes toward single-use plastic food packaging, from Summer 2019 to Summer 2020. The methodology relies on two, representative surveys of the Canadian population, carried out in May 2019 (n = 1,094) and in June 2020 (n = 977). Our measures explored potential impacts on consumer perceptions, driven both by new food safety concerns during the pandemic and also by increased price consciousness during a time of economic recession. We found that 55% of respondents were more concerned about food safety since COVID-19, and that 50% of respondents had become more price conscious when buying groceries. However, we found only a slight decline in motivation to reduce plastics - though with a sharper reduction among males. A stronger shift was seen in attitudes towards policy, where our results show a clear decline in support for tighter regulations or bans on single-use plastics, along with an increase in consumers' willingness to pay for biodegradable alternatives. These findings suggest a more difficult road ahead for legislative approaches, but also potential opportunities for market-based strategies and innovations in the food sector.

ABSTRACT

Influenza A virus (IAV) is a leading cause of respiratory disease worldwide often resulting in hospitalization or death. In this study, TLR4 immunostimulatory molecules, Bacterial Enzymatic Combinatorial Chemistry (BECC) 438 and BECC470 were found to be superior IAV vaccine adjuvants when compared to the classic adjuvant alhydrogel (alum) and Phosphorylated Hexa-Acyl Disaccharide (PHAD), a synthetic TLR4 agonist. BECC molecules allow for antigen sparing of a recombinant HA (rHA) protein, elicit a more balanced IgG1/IgG2a response, and were protective in a prime only dosing schedule. Importantly, BECC molecules afford protection from a heterologous IAV strain demonstrating that a cross-protective influenza vaccine is possible when the antigen is effectively adjuvanted.
