ABSTRACT

To study whether fluorescent lighting at work might increase carcinogenesis, hairless mice were exposed to a bank of six 36 W standard fluorescent lamps (neutral-white) every workday for 8 h at an illuminance level of 1,000 lx. For comparison, other mice were exposed to UVB radiation or to simulated solar radiation. In experiment A the animals were irradiated for 6 weeks prior to the application of 7,12-dimethyl-benzanthracene once and--following an interval of 2 days--for 10 weeks after DMBA application. The number of blue nevi and papillomas was enhanced by exposure to all spectra 10 weeks after chemical tumor induction. In experiment B the animals were irradiated for 6 weeks prior to the transplantation of UV-induced fibrosarcoma cells from syngeneic mice into the dorsal and ventral skin. Within the following 4 months fibrosarcoma developed in the dorsal skin exposed to the fluorescent lighting and to the UVB radiation, as well as in the non-irradiated ventral skin of 10-20% of the mice. The results suggest that fluorescent lighting as used in certain work environments may increase carcinogenesis caused by other factors.

ABSTRACT

We report on late cutaneous manifestations following exposition to gas (in particular N- and S-LOST) which had not been observed until within the last years. In the years 1945 to 1951, inadequate protective measures during disbandment of the "Heeresmunitionsanstalt St. Georgen" caused contamination and inhalation of these radiomimetics in about 400 persons. Apart from the still today little known pulmonal and cardiac late manifestations, the surviving persons now suffer from multiple skin tumors, such as basal cell carcinomas, Bowen's disease, Bowen's carcinoma and carcinoma spinocellulare even in unexposed parts of the skin. Moreover, there are observed spontaneous flat and partly necrotic, gangrenously imposing, very painful ulcerations with tendency to spread, which keep unaffected by all therapeutic measures. The findings have been documented historically, macroscopically, histologically as well as cytologically. Presentation of these late sequele is of particular importance since at that time containers with mustard gas had been unloaded anywhere in the FRG without any special precautions, so that also contamination of citizens has to be assumed. For this reason, similar findings are to be expected throughout the country, accumulated in certain regions. This additional aspect has also to be considered concerning the application of these radiomimetics therapy of psoriasis ("Russian ointment").

ABSTRACT

A tumor is reported which originated rom an osteoma cutis and expanded into the surrounding tissue by infiltration and destruction. Histologically, there were no signs of malignancy. In cell culture there grew populations of bone-like tissue with highly active metabolism and negative contact inhibition. Therapeutic trials with diphosphonate are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The modified leucocyte-longterm culture is presented as adequate procedure for demonstration of tumor cells from peripheral blood of melanomalignoma patients. By means of the proliferation cinetics, an exact differentiation between tumor cells on one side, and melanophages, so called irritated monocytic forms and endothelial cells on the other side is possible. In this in vitro-system proliferative tumorcells from peripheral blood can be differed from non-proliferative ones. The interaction between tumor cells, macrophages and lymphocytes is reported.

ABSTRACT

A new routine-method is presented for the morphokinetic documentation of autoimmunologically induced processes in vitro via leukocyte long-term culture (LLC). The prominent rosette-sheeped autologous lymphocytes in deposition at central granulocytes are well defined. These autologous rosette-formations in LLC rank very high in diagnosis of autoimmundiseases, since this phenomenon is positive already, while the results of current methods in routine-serumexaminations are still negative. Presenting a case of discoid Lupus Erythematodes this well developed method is represented in early recognition of dermatological autoimmundiseases, while cellular cinetics are discussed.
