ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Anorexia is the most common cause of malnutrition in lung cancer patients as well as an independent prognostic factor for cancer survival. This review will deal with the clinical evidence of herbal medicine use for reducing anorexia in lung cancer patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Fourteen electronic databases will be searched from inception until October 2020. We will include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing herbal medicines for anorexia in lung cancer patients. Interventions of any herbal medicines will be included. The methodological qualities of the included RCTs will be assessed via the Cochrane Collaboration tool for assessing the risk of bias. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) instrument will be used to evaluate the confidence in the cumulative evidence. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This systematic literature review does not require an ethics review. This review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and disseminated electronically and in print. The review will be updated to inform and guide healthcare practices. REGISTRATION NUMBER: reviewregistry1038.

ABSTRACT

3-Bromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (BDB) is a natural bromophenol compound that is most commonly isolated from red algae. The present study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of BDB on atopic dermatitis (AD) in mice induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophages. BDB treatment (100 mg/kg) resulted in suppression of the development of AD symptoms compared with the control treatment (induction-only), as demonstrated by reduced immunoglobulin E levels in serum, smaller lymph nodes with reduced thickness and length, a decrease in ear edema, and reduced levels of inflammatory cell infiltration in the ears. In RAW 264.7 murine macrophages, BDB (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 µM) suppressed the production of interleukin-6, a proinflammatory cytokine, in a dose-dependent manner. BDB also had an inhibitory effect on the phosphorylation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1; Tyr 701), two major signaling molecules involved in cellular inflammation. Taken together, the results show that BDB treatment alleviates inflammatory responses in an atopic dermatitis mouse model and RAW 264.7 macrophages. These results suggest that BDB may be a useful therapeutic strategy for treating conditions involving allergic inflammation such as atopic dermatitis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Comparisons between the efficacies of supraglottic airway devices (SGAs) and endotracheal tubes (ETTs) in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgeries have yielded conflicting results. Therefore, in this meta-analysis, we compared the clinical performance and incidence of complications between SGAs and ETT intubation in laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Google Scholar to identify randomized controlled trials that compared SGAs with ETTs in laparoscopic surgery. RESULTS: In total, 1433 patients from 17 studies were included in the final analysis. SGAs and ETTs showed no difference in insertion success rate on the first attempt (relative risk [RR] 1.01, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.99-1.03), insertion time (standardized mean difference 1.57, 95% CI -3.74 to 0.61), and oropharyngeal leak pressure (OLP) (mean difference -2.54, 95% CI -7.59 to 2.50). The incidence of desaturation (RR 3.65, 95% CI 1.39-9.62), gastric insufflations (RR 0.90, 95% CI 0.48-1.71), regurgitation (RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.02-49.13), and aspiration (RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.01-78.4) also showed no intergroup differences. However, the incidence of laryngospasm (RR 3.12, 95% CI 1.29-7.52), cough at removal (RR 6.68, 95% CI 4.70-9.48), dysphagia (RR 1.47, 95% CI 1.12-1.95) or dysphonia (RR 4.41, 95% CI 1.25-15.55), sore throat (RR 1.60, 95% CI 1.33-1.93), and hoarseness (RR 1.53, 95% CI 1.29-1.81) was higher in the ETT group than in the SGA group. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of laryngospasm, cough at removal, dysphagia or dysphonia, sore throat, and hoarseness were higher in the ETT group than in the SGA group. However, the groups showed no differences in the rate of insertion success on the first attempt, insertion time, OLP, and other complications. Therefore, SGAs might be clinically more useful as effective airways in laparoscopic surgery.
