ABSTRACT

We report high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of Mn doping. Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, for both low (1%) and high (13%) Mn doping values, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Magnetization and temperature-dependent core-level photoemission spectra reveal how the delocalized character of the Mn states enables the bulk ferromagnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As.

ABSTRACT

We report x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of both temperature and Mn doping. Analysis of Mn 2p core level spectra reveals the presence of a distinct electronic screening channel in the bulk, hitherto undetected in more surface sensitive analysis. Comparison with model calculations identifies the character of the Mn 3d electronic states and clarifies the role, and the difference between surface and bulk, of hybridization in mediating the ferromagnetic coupling in (Ga,Mn)As.

ABSTRACT

A case report of a HIV seropositive 8-year-old child with vulvar and anal border neoplasia, both grade 3, and the adopted therapeutic management are presented. The mother reported the history of a progressively growing verrucous lesion in the vulva since the age of three and a half years. On physical examination a pigmented and elevated lesion was observed in the whole vulvar region extending to the anal region and intergluteal sulcus. After biopsies and anatomic pathological examination, antiretroviral therapy, adequate for age, and topical application of podophyllotoxin associated with Thuya officinalis extract was started. Three months afterwards vaporization and CO2 laser excision were performed in five sequential sessions, thereafter associated with topical imiquimod application. After the first two sessions of laser therapy early relapses occurred. After four weeks of imiquimod use, already a significant improvement of the lesions was observed, making the following laser therapy sessions easier. We conclude that antiretroviral therapy associated with podophyllotoxin and Thuya was not effective regarding regression of the lesions. Laser therapy alone led to early relapses. The local use of imiquimod associated with laser was effective in decreasing and controling the lesions.

ABSTRACT

Dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) is one of the acidic phosphorylated extracellular matrix proteins called the SIBLING (small integrin-binding ligand, N-linked glycoproteins) family. Recent studies showed that DMP1 is expressed in the mineralized tissues and suggested that DMP1 is involved in the mineralization. We investigated the precise localization of DMP1 messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein during fracture healing. In situ hybridization demonstrated that DMP1 mRNA was strongly expressed in preosteocytes and osteocytes in the bony callus during intramembranous and endochondral ossification while DMP1 mRNA was not detected in osteoblasts and chondrocytes. During endochondral ossification, however, a low number of DMP1-expressing cells were identified in the cluster of hypertrophic chondrocytes. However, these DMP1-expressing cells were not hypertrophic and were likely to be osteoblast-lineage cells, which were embedded in the matrix of bone or cartilage, because type I collagen-expressing cells and invasion of capillary vessels were observed in the same area. Northern blot, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemical analyses showed that DMP1 mRNA and protein expressions were increased until day 14 postfracture, when bony callus was formed, and then declined to a lower level during remodeling of the bony callus. Therefore, DMP1 is likely to play an important role in the mineralization of the bony callus.

ABSTRACT

When performing multiresidue analysis of pesticides, the recovery of thiometon was less than 20% from carrots and eggplants, but about 100% from garlic chives and welsh onions. The recovery of thiometon was found to depend on the lot of ethyl acetate. A 2-year-old lot of ethyl acetate caused degradation of thiometon, but a fresh lot of ethyl acetate did not. Analysis showed that ethyl acetate stored for 2 years contained about 5 microL/mL of acetaldehyde. Thiometon was also degraded by acetone or acetonitrile, when acetaldehyde was added to them, in the same manner as by aged ethyl acetate. The fact that the recovery of thiometon from welsh onions was about 100% indicated that some of the mercaptans in allium vegetables may prevent thiometon degradation. Mercaptans such as L-cysteine and 3-mercaptoproionic acid were confirmed to prevent the degradation of thiometon and disulfoton. These findings show that mercaptans may be useful additives for analyzing thiometon and disulfoton.

ABSTRACT

Cystic duct duplication with a single gallbladder is one of the most uncommon abnormalities of the biliary tract, with fewer than 15 instances published. The authors describe a 49-year-old patient undergoing a laparoscopic cholecystectomy in whom a second cystic duct was found, initially misdiagnosed as the biliary tract. The cholecystectomy was performed successfully with the aid of intraoperative cholangiography. It is the first time a duplicated cystic duct has been treated successfully using a laparoscopic approach.
