ABSTRACT

We evaluated the surface EMG of m. rectus fem., m. tibialis ant. and m. peroneus long. using power density spectral analysis. The frequency distributions were calculated using the fast Fourier transformation for 0-250 Hz. The results of PPS patients were compared to physiological state by ranking in five to 50 Hz subranges. In cases of healthy subjects the maximum signal power falls on 50-100 Hz subrange, the minimum on 200-250 Hz. Depending on the severity of pathological symptoms, the PPS patients showed 2 different types of neuromuscular compensations. More severe pathology caused the spectrum shifts toward the higher frequencies, where the lighter cases manifest the spectrum shifts toward the lower frequencies.

ABSTRACT

The new electromyographic test is based on fast Fourier transformation application for analysis of global electromyograms. Specifically designed Dynalog apparatus is described. Dynalog records EMG signal and transfers it to IBM-PC. One hundred thirty-eight global electromyograms were taken from 4 muscle groups (m.rectus femoris, m.deltoideus, mm. flexores antebrachii, mm. extensores antebrachii) in healthy individuals. Standard graphs of power distribution were obtained. Physiologically, at maximum voluntary contraction, power distribution spectrum of 4 muscles display characteristic, repeatable features. The frequency distribution range is 0-250 Hz. The records obtained show an ascending part (10-50 Hz), plateau (50-100 Hz) and mildly descending one at 150 Hz, subsequently to 250 Hz.

ABSTRACT

This study deals with mathematical assessment of physiologic and pathologic EMG frequency distribution by means of ranging. Material consisted of 161 pathologic EMG (63 myogenic cases, 98 neurogenic cases). In physiologic EMG power density distribution shows the highest values between 50 and 100 Hz, the lowest between 200 and 250 Hz. From 0 to 50 Hz power density increases, from 100 to 250 Hz-decreases. In patients with muscular diseases of different etiology the EMG power density spectrum is markedly different. The highest values appear more frequently between 0 and 50 Hz, sometimes also between 100 and 150 Hz. The frequency distribution allows mainly for assessing intensity of EMG pathology; is less useful for determination of its type.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was the analysis of the sequence of electrophysiological changes occurring in the skeletal muscles in patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis (HD) and intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD). In 30 patients (10 treated with IPD-group I, 20 with HD-group II) the global electromyography (EMG) was determined in the muscles: pectoralis, obliqus and rectus abd., biceps brachii, thenar and hypothenar. The fatigue test was determined in the m. biceps brachii. The examinations were done twice during the 12 months of observations. The analysis of the material showed that myoelectrical activity of the examined muscles was significantly lower compared to a control group and did not changed during the 12 months of observations. The results of the fatigue test showed that in uremic patients the fatiguability of m. biceps brachii was significantly greater and was deeper after 12 months of observations. The analysis of the maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure showed that respiratory muscles in uremic patients were weak. The results of the measurements the hand grip pressure showed that hand muscles were weak also.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was the analysis of the sequence of electrophysiological changes occurring in the peripheral nerves in patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis and intermittent peritoneal dialysis. In 33 patients (21 treated with hemodialysis and in 12 treated with intermittent peritoneal dialysis) impulse conduction was determined in the motor and sensory fibers nerves. The examinations were done twice during 12 months of observations. The analysis of the material showed that sensory nerve conduction velocity was normal in all patients and did not changed during the study. Motor nerve conduction velocity was however significantly slower in all patients and did not changed during the study. The amplitude of sensory response was lower in all patients, the values of subjective and objective sensory response were higher compared to a control group. In all patient the quantitative EMG of m. abd. pollicis brevis was done. A signs of neurogenic atrophy were found in all patients. Only in one patients we observed signs of primary myopathy. There were no differences in the electrophysiological parameters in the patients treated with hemodialysis and with intermittent peritoneal dialysis.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to test the effect of tumor on neuromuscular function in rats and to compare the neoplastic neuro-myopathy in patients with the animal model. In the I experimental part were performed: EMG examination, motor nerve conduction velocity and membrane resting potential defining, test with repetitive supramaximal stimulation and measurement of the muscle weight on rats with transplanted epithelioma Guérin (EG) as well as with benzopyrene induced fibrosarcoma (Sa). II Clinical part was carried out in patients with neoplasma using routine electrophysiological methods. The results obtained in the I part indicate the neurogenic atrophy of the muscle, progressing with tumor development. The pathological signs were much more expressed in E.G. group than in Sa group. In the II part it was found the decrease of sensory nerve's excitability and of EMG surface. Concluding the transplantable tumor (EG) influence in rats neuromyopathy with the destruction of the whole motor unit. They are strict relations between the findings observed in E.G. rats and those reported in patients with neoplastic disease.

ABSTRACT

The electroneurograms of the tibial and median nerve in children with arthrogryposis have been performed; excitability curves which characterizes the function of the nerves were recorded. Afferent conduction velocity in 30 examined nerves showed statistically significant slowing down. An amplitude of evoked potentials in the tibial and median nerves was decreased but the difference compared to the control group was not statistically significant. Histograms based on electroneurography indicate existence of two groups of results, that might reflect neurogenic and/or myogenic origin of arthrogryposis. Excitability curve has been moved upwards and to the right in one point only, characterizing the tibial nerve function; in 5 remaining points the differences with controls were not significant. All-over results indicate subclinical afferentation impairment within lower extremities in children with arthrogryposis.

ABSTRACT

Electroneurographic and thermographic investigations were done in 32 persons. Sensory nerve conduction velocity, amplitude of sensory nerve potential, subjective and objective sensory thresholds were determined during stimulation of each finger. The maximal and minimal skin temperatures for each finger were evaluated from thermograms taken from the dorsal and palmar surface of the hand before and after standard cooling test. The measurements were done in a thermostabilised room at 19-21 degrees C effective ambient temperature. The second degree correlations between the electroneurographic and thermographic parameters were calculated. The statistical analysis revealed the presence of a double correlation pattern depending on the homoiothermic or poikilothermic thermoregulatory ability of the finger. The differentiation threshold criterion for the poikilo- and homoiothermic group assignment was the minimal rest temperature of the finger equal to 28 degrees C. The correlations in the poikilothermic fingers were very strong and much stronger than in the homoiothermic fingers. Correlations with temperatures were strong both at rest as well as after cooling. Correlations for the sensory nerve potential amplitude likewise for the objective and subjective thresholds were stronger than for the conduction velocity. Sensory nerve potential amplitude increases and subjective and objective thresholds decrease with finger temperature. The obtained results suggest that sensory nerve conduction is related not only to the actual tissue temperature but also to local thermoregulatory ability.

ABSTRACT

Electroneurographic and thermographic investigations were carried out in 32 persons. Sensory nerve conduction velocity, the amplitude of sensory nerve potential, subjective and objective electrical threshold were determined during the stimulation of each finger. Thermograms were taken before and after the standard cooling test. Statistical analysis has revealed that all the results of electroneurographic and thermographic parameters obtained from the fingers of the same person as well as of all investigated persons are directly connected. Highly significant (p = 0.001 and 0.01) correlations of second degree were found between electroneurographic and temperature parameters.

ABSTRACT

Thirty two metallurgical industry workers exposed to vibration (I group) and nine workers of the same industrial plant but unexposed to vibration (II group) underwent the following tests: electromyography--abductor dig. V, and abductor pollicis brevis, conductability of sensory fibers n. medianus and ulnaris, conductability of motoric fibers of n. ulnaris. In the third, control, group twenty five men had conductability norms determined. The results have been statistically analysed. Electromyography appeared more useful for the diagnosis of early symptoms of the vibration disease than for nerves conductability tests. The tests of sensory nerves conductability exhibit frequent deviations in the II group workers. Positive correlation was found between electromyography and nerves conductability findings.
