ABSTRACT

A treatment for hyperphosphatemia would be expected to reduce mortality rates for CKD and dialysis patients. Although rodent studies have suggested sodium-dependent phosphate transporter type IIb (NaPi-IIb) as a potential target for hyperphosphatemia, NaPi-IIb selective inhibitors failed to achieve efficacy in human clinical trials. In this study, we analyzed phosphate metabolism in rats, dogs, and monkeys to confirm the species differences. Factors related to phosphate metabolism were measured and intestinal phosphate absorption rate was calculated from fecal excretion in each species. Phosphate uptake by intestinal brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) and the mRNA expression of NaPi-IIb, PiT-1, and PiT-2 were analyzed. In addition, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was evaluated. The intestinal phosphate absorption rate, including phosphate uptake by BBMV and NaPi-IIb expression, was the highest in dogs. Notably, urinary phosphate excretion was the lowest in monkeys, and their intestinal phosphate absorption rate was by far the lowest. Dogs and rats showed positive correlations between Vmax/Km of phosphate uptake in BBMV and NaPi-IIb expression. Although phosphate uptake was observed in the BBMV of monkeys, NaPi-IIb expression was not detected and ALP activity was low. This study revealed significant species differences in intestinal phosphate absorption. NaPi-IIb contributes to intestinal phosphate uptake in rats and dogs. However, in monkeys, phosphate is poorly absorbed due to the slight degradation of organic phosphate in the intestine.

ABSTRACT

An X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer scanning setup consisting of three transmission gratings, a laboratory-based X-ray source that emits X-rays vertically, and an image detector on the top has been developed for the application of X-ray phase imaging to moving objects that cannot be tested clearly with conventional absorption contrast. The grating-based X-ray phase imaging method usually employs a phase-stepping (or fringe-scanning) technique by displacing one of the gratings step-by-step while the object stays still. Since this approach is not compatible with a scanner-type application for moving objects, we have developed a new algorithm for achieving the function of phase-stepping without grating displacement. By analyzing the movie of the moiré pattern as the object moves across the field of view, we obtain the absorption, differential phase, and visibility images. The feasibility of the X-ray phase imaging scanner has been successfully demonstrated for a long sample moving at 5 mm/s. This achievement is a breakthrough for the practical industrial application of X-ray phase imaging for screening objects carried on belt-conveyers such as those in factories.

Studies show that the radiation dose received during a micro-CT examination may have adverse effects on living subjects. However, the correlations between the biological effects and the radiation doses have never been thoroughly evaluated in the majority of cases. In this study, we evaluated the biological radiation effects of measured radiation doses in ICR mice using cone-beam micro-CT scans. Long-term in vivo whole-body micro-CT scans of ICR mice were performed for a duration of 4 weeks. Although a scanning frequency of three scans per week is higher than that necessary for conventional studies, this study represents particular cases where the subjects may undergo an extreme number of examinations. The average X-ray dose of a CT scan measures 16.19 mGy at the center of a phantom and 16.24 mGy at an offset position of 7.5 mm from the center of the phantom. The total average dose at the center of the phantom during the 4-week scanning period was 194.3 mGy. No significant radiation effects were observed in the weight gain curves, organ weights, blood analyses, litter sizes, reared offspring sizes, and the histopathologic results. Therefore, it is unlikely that the measured doses for the CT scans caused any radiation damage in the mice.

ABSTRACT

The system described in this paper provides a real-time 3D visual experience by using an array of 64 video cameras and an integral photography display with 60 viewing directions. The live 3D scene in front of the camera array is reproduced by the full-color, full-parallax autostereoscopic display with interactive control of viewing parameters. The main technical challenge is fast and flexible conversion of the data from the 64 multicamera images to the integral photography format. Based on image-based rendering techniques, our conversion method first renders 60 novel images corresponding to the viewing directions of the display, and then arranges the rendered pixels to produce an integral photography image. For real-time processing on a single PC, all the conversion processes are implemented on a GPU with GPGPU techniques. The conversion method also allows a user to interactively control viewing parameters of the displayed image for reproducing the dynamic 3D scene with desirable parameters. This control is performed as a software process, without reconfiguring the hardware system, by changing the rendering parameters such as the convergence point of the rendering cameras and the interval between the viewpoints of the rendering cameras.
