ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to present histopathological evaluation of orbital tissue encircling intraorbital implant and to present influence of glassy carbon on blood parameters of rabbits. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined 20 rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus) and 2 pigs (Suis Domesticus) with carbon orbital implants. Periodically the experimental animals were killed 5, 20, 35, 60, 100, 150 days after implantation of glassy carbon into the orbit. Encircling tissue was histopathologically examined. The blood was taken to analysis on 0, 5, 20, 35, 60, 100, 150 day after procedure. RESULTS: Histopathological specimens of rabbits did not show intolerance reaction of glassy carbon. Histopathological picture was typical of the "foreign body" reaction. Histopathological pictures of pigs did not show any reaction to implant. There was no deviation in blood parameters. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that intraorbital glassy carbon implants do not induct intolerance reactions to orbital tissues. Glassy carbon implant does not have any influence on basic blood parameters of rabbits.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the report is to describe a 31-year-old pregnant woman with EPH-gestosis presenting typical clinical features of bilateral retinal detachment. We noticed that it was associated with low degree of total protein and albumin in serum. Shortcoming protein balance was associated with adhibition of retinae. Attention is paid to the fact that elevation of retinal detachment responded to the treatment involving parenteral administration of albumin. In this case we achieved reattachment of retinae and regained full visual acuity.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To present our results of orbital fracture treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 28 patients with orbital fracture hospitalized at Ophthalmology Department of Medical University in Gdansk during last 5 years. Most of them had a blow-out fracture type. We reconstructed it using artificial materials (cranioplast). It was shaped according to the defect of the bone. Fracture of zygomatico-frontalis and zygomatico-maxillaris suture was fixed by bone sutures. The same method was used to treat gaps in medial and superior wall of the orbit. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We took into consideration the period of time between the trauma and surgical procedure. Full recovery (lack of diplopia) was achieved in 10 cases which underwent operation in less then 14 days after trauma and only in 2 cases in the group where patients were operated later than 14 days after accident.

ABSTRACT

There are many procedures providing treatment of ptosis. In cases with palpebrae levator palsy, procedures involving mechanical suspension of palpebrae are used. Artificial and natural materials are used to suspend the lid. We describe surgical treatment of blepharoptosis using autogenous temporalis fascia sling. The sling is attached to the tarsus and spreads to the frontalis muscle. We have used this procedure in 12 cases. Full effect of functional elevation of palpebrae was achieved in 14 to 30 days after procedure. We did not encounter any significant complications due to this material. These operative modifications make this procedure more closely parallel to the normal eyelid dynamics and provide consistently good results for this difficult problem.

ABSTRACT

We present the ultrasonographic examination of the orbit of 34-years-old patient after evisceration of the right globe. During the operation the glassy-carbon implant was inserted into the scleral socket. The aim of the article is the comparison of ultrasonographic examination of the orbit without globe with the intrascleral glassy-carbon implant and with the glassy-carbon ball placed in the water.

ABSTRACT

In the literature there are only 3 cases of women with Kaerns-Sayre Syndrome (KSS) who delivered a healthy child. Our case is the fourth. The purpose of the report is to describe a 30-year old woman presenting typical clinical features of KSS, namely progressive external ophthalmoplegia, pigmentary retinal degeneration and onset of the disease before the age of 20. It was also associated with cardiac conduction defects, neurological symptoms and variety of endocrine and metabolic disorders. On muscle biopsy (m. biceps brachii) mitochondrial abnormalities on electron microscopy were seen. KSS is a form of mitochondrial myopathy with specific clinical features. Recognition of mtDNA deletion as the genetic basis of KSS confirmed the validity of clinical criteria.

ABSTRACT

Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) is a form of mitochondrial myopathy in which specific clinical features, namely progressive external ophthalmoplegia, pigmentary retinal degeneration and onset before age 20 occur. It can also be associated with cardiac conduction defects, neurological and variety of endocrine and metabolic disorders. Recognition of mtDNA deletion as the genetic basis of KSS has confirmed the validity of clinical criteria. The purpose of the report is to describe a 30-year-old woman presenting typical clinical features of KSS. On muscle biopsy ragged red fibres and mitochondrial abnormalities on electron microscopy were seen. In spite of menstrual disturbances she became pregnant and delivered health child. In 30 week of pregnancy the VVI pacemaker was implanted because of syncope most probably related to paroxysmal complete heart block.

ABSTRACT

Results of surgical treatment of lid neoplasms, taking into account cosmetic effects are presented. The age of patients ranged from 28-78 years, with 58% above 60; 69% of them were males. The choice of surgical method depended on the advancement of the neoplasms, their localization and the age of patients. During 2-year follow-up no recurrence was observed and the functional and cosmetic results of treatment were satisfactory.

ABSTRACT

The inertial guidance system in the Saturn 1B and Saturn 5 space vehicles is aligned in azimuth prior to lift-off by a Perkin-Elmer high precision, automatic alignment theodolite. This special theodolite, designated the AALT-SV-M2, acquires and locks onto the autocollimated images from each of two porro prisms mounted within the instrument unit on top of the S4-B booster stage of the vehicle. A separate retroreflecting prism on the skin of the instrument unit near the porro prisms is also tracked to eliminate the effects of vehicle sway. The theodolite itself is located in an underground hut between the crawler-ways about 232 m from the base of the vehicle. Six of these theodolite systems have been built by Perkin-Elmer under contract to NASA. These units have been used successfully in all the Saturn launches to date; they have consistently achieved better than the required alignment accuracy of +/-2 sec of arc for all missions. In this paper, we describe the theodolite and its function as an integrated electrooptical system. The means employed to separate the various return images into the proper channels and to generate the required error signals are discussed.
