ABSTRACT

Despite recent significant progress in real-time, large-area computer-generated holography, its memory requirements and computational loads will be hard to tackle for several decades to come with the current paradigm based on a priori calculations and bit-plane writing to a spatial light modulator. Here we experimentally demonstrate a holistic approach to serial computation and repeatable writing of computer-generated dynamic holograms without Fourier transform, using minimal amounts of computer memory. We use the ultrafast opto-magnetic recording of holographic patterns in a ferrimagnetic film with femtosecond laser pulses, driven by the on-the-fly hardware computation of a single holographic point. The intensity-threshold nature of the magnetic medium allows sub-diffraction-limited, point-by-point toggling of arbitrarily localized magnetic spots on the sample, according to the proposed circular detour-phase encoding, providing complex modulation and symmetrical suppression of upper diffractive orders and conjugated terms in holographically reconstructed 3-D images.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair is becoming a popular technique with good results and fast postoperative recovery. The mesh is placed directly under the peritoneum and anchored with transabdominal sutures and tacks. However, the ideal size of the mesh covering the hernia orifice is know, nor the ideal type or amount of tacks has to be described. METHODS: To assess the forces acting on a single tack, a mathematical model of the ventral hernia was created. The force was described in reference to the surface of the hernia orifice and the pressure in the abdominal cavity. The following different types of mesh were examined in vitro: Proceed (knitted mesh), Dual Mesh (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene [ePTFE] flat mesh), and Shelhigh (biologic flat mesh). The following different tacks also were examined: Protac, Anchor, and EMS. A pig model was used to measure the forces needed to destroy the connection between mesh and tissue and to describe the place of destruction (mesh, tissue, or tack) and the force needed. RESULTS: The force acting on a single tack proportionally depends on the surface of the hernia orifice and the pressure in the abdominal cavity. The force needed to disconnect the tissue and mesh reached 8.97 +/- 0.11 N for ProTac, 2.67 +/- 0.22 N for Anchor, and 6.67 +/- 1.32 N for EMS. These values do not allow the mesh to be held in the right position when the orifice exceeds 10 cm for Protac and EMS. The disconnection of the EMS and Protac junction damages the tissue. Anchor tacks are insufficient to hold the mesh and stay in the tissue CONCLUSIONS: In the case of small hernias (diameter<10 cm) EMS or ProTac used alone are not enough to hold the mesh. Anchor is not recommended alone in any hernia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this research was to assess the activation level of circulating monocytes in patients with unstable angina. BACKGROUND: Markers of systemic inflammatory responses are increased in patients with unstable coronary syndromes, but the activation state and invasive capacity of circulating monocytes have not been directly assessed. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (MC) activation in blood samples isolated from patients with stable and unstable coronary artery disease was measured in two studies. In study 1, a modified Boyden chamber assay was used to assess spontaneous cellular migration rates. In study 2, optical analysis of MC membrane fluidity was correlated with soluble CD14 (sCD14), a cellular activation marker. RESULTS: Increased rates of spontaneous monocyte migration (p < 0.01) were detected in patients with unstable angina (UA) (Canadian Cardiovascular Society [CCS] angina class IV) on comparison to patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), stable angina (CCS angina classes I to III) or normal donors. No significant increase in lymphocyte migration was detected in any patient category. Baseline MC membrane fluidity measurements and sCD14 levels in patients with CCS class IV angina were significantly increased on comparison with MCs from normal volunteers (p < 0.001). A concomitant reduction in the MC response to activation was detected (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Using two complementary assays, activated monocytes with increased invasive capacity were detected in the circulation of patients with unstable angina. This is the first demonstration of increased monocyte invasive potential in unstable patients, raising the issue that systemic inflammation may both reflect and potentially drive plaque instability.

ABSTRACT

The common occurrence of polyandry continues to puzzle evolutionary biologists, as female reproductive success is thought to be limited mostly by her fecundity. Here we test whether females of the bulb mite, a species in which the females are highly promiscuous, benefit from polyandry in terms of increased fitness of their progeny. Females were given opportunity to mate with either one or six males, but the experiment was designed to allow the same number of matings per female in both groups, that is, irrespective of the number of males. We found that daughters of females mated to six males had significantly higher fecundity than daughters of females mated to one male, whereas other fitness components of progeny (male virility and longevity of both sexes) were not affected. These findings appear to support hypotheses proposing that multi-male mating enables females to exercise postcopulatory mate-choice (direct or indirect, via sperm competition) and thus accrue genetic benefits.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate post cryotherapy thyroid function status of normal rat thyroid tissue and to determine the topography of temperature of cryotreated tissues and of tissues adjacent to them. Nitrous oxide cryotherapy was performed in 40 male Wistar rats. They were divided into four groups of 10. In group I, the right thyroid lobe was subjected to cryotherapy and the left lobe was not frozen. In group II, both thyroid lobes were cryotreated. In group III, the right lobe was frozen and the left lobe was excised. In group IV, the thyroid was subjected to neither cryotherapy nor surgery. During cryotherapy, the temperature in various places of the thyroid and in the surrounding tissues was measured. Serum thyrotropin concentrations were determined before an experiment and 4 weeks after in all rats. The results of temperature measurements proved that it is possible to limit cryotherapy to certain areas of thyroid tissue and to spare the neighboring tissues, because they are not subjected to temperatures that are damaging. The effectiveness of cryotherapy was confirmed by functional effect. Cryotherapy changed function of thyroid tissue. There was a statistically significant difference between mean baseline and follow-up concentrations in rats of groups II and III. In both groups hypothyroidism occurred post cryotherapy.

ABSTRACT

The authors have presented a very rare case of multiple primary neoplasms of parotid gland: adenolymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Primary multiple neoplasms and multifocal neoplasms are a very complex problem and therefore have been a topic of many articles. The authors describe mechanism of origin, frequency of occurrence, possibilities of diagnostics. The main reason of these neoplasms origin are simultaneously exposure of the tissue to damaging factors and special tissue sensitivity.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to estimate diagnostic value of the scintigraphy, sialography and fine needle aspiration biopsy in the diagnosis of parotid gland nonmalignant neoplasms. Evaluation was performed on a 116-patient group with parotid gland nonmalignant neoplasms treated in 1st Department of Laryngology, Silesian Medical University in Katowice, Poland, from 1989 to 1995.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to assess the CEA antigen and glycoproteins associated antigen CA-50 and CA-242 in tumours of digestive tract and thyroid gland. 84 patients were the material of the study-33 with digestive tracts' neoplasms (among them 22 cases of large bowel cancer and 11 with cancer of pancreas) and 51 with thyroid neoplasms (30 patients with well differentiated thyroid cancer, 21 follicular adenomas of thyroid). There were assessed level of CA-50 and CA-242 glycoprotein associated antigens. Results were compared with CEA-for digestive tract cancer and Tg levels in thyroid neoplasm respectively. In large bowel cancer (22 cases) there were in 10 patients (45%) with elevated level of CEA, 14 patients with elevated CA-50 (63%) and the same number for CA-242 (14 patients-63%). In cancer of pancreas (total 11 patients) there were CEA elevated level in 3 (27%) patients, CA-50 in 7 (64%) patients and CA-242 in 6 (55%) patients. Patients with well differentiated thyroid cancer (30 cases) revealed elevated level of Tg in 24 (80%) patients, CA-50 in 4 (13%), and CA-242 in 4 (13%) ones. The patients with follicular adenomas (21) had elevated Tg level in 17 (80%) cases, CA-50 in 3 (14%) cases and CA-242 in one patient (4.7%).

ABSTRACT

In membrane preparation of chick cerebral cortex, HA (histamine) did not affect both basal and forskolin-stimulated adenylyl cyclase activity. However, in slices of chick cerebral cortex prelabeled with [3H]adenine, HA, as well as 2-methylHA, 4-methylHA, and N alpha-methylHA, potently increased [3H]cyclic AMP accumulation in a concentration-dependent manner. The stimulatory effect of the HA-ergic compounds on cyclic AMP formation was antagonized by HA H2-receptor blockers (aminopotentidine, ranitidine), and by chelerythrine (50 microM), a potent and selective inhibitor of PKC (protein kinase C). Of the two other tested PKC inhibitors H-7 (100 microM) significantly reduced the HA action, while the effect of staurosporine (1 microM) did not reach the level of statistical significance. Preincubation of chick cerebral cortical slices with a PKC activator, PDB (4 beta-phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate, 1 microM), markedly enhanced the accumulation of cyclic AMP evoked by HA, 2-methylHA, 4-methylHA and N alpha-methylHA. 4 beta-Phorbol, inactive on PKC, was ineffective. A possible role of PKC in the regulation of HA-induced cyclic AMP synthesis in chick cerebrum has been discussed.

ABSTRACT

The authors present the results of fine needle aspiration biopsy in 58 patients with tumors of head and neck. Cytological and pathomorphological correlation was evaluated in all patients. The highest accuracy of cyto-pathomorphological was obtained in parotid gland tumors, both benign and malign, and in lymph nodes of the neck. The lowest accuracy was obtained in tumors of the orbit.

Both were treated by surgical resection with following radiotherapy. Observation period in one case without any recurrent signs and neoplasmatic dissemination is 16 years.
