ABSTRACT

IgA nephropathy (IgAN), which has been confirmed as a complement mediated autoimmune disease, is also one form of glomerulonephritis associated with COVID-19. Here, we aim to investigate the clinical and immunological characteristics of patients with IgAN after COVID-19. The level of plasma level of C5a (p < 0.001), soluble C5b-9 (p = 0.018), FHR5 (p < 0.001) were all significantly higher in Group CoV (33 patients with renal biopsy-proven IgAN experienced COVID-19) compared with Group non-CoV (44 patients with IgAN without COVID-19), respectively. Compared with Group non-CoV, the intensity of glomerular C4d (p = 0.017) and MAC deposition (p < 0.001) and Gd-IgA1 deposition (p = 0.005) were much stronger in Group CoV. Our finding revealed that for IgAN after COVID-19, mucosal immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection may result in the overactivation of systemic and renal local complement system, and increased glomerular deposition of Gd-IgA1, which may lead to renal dysfunction and promote renal progression in IgAN patients.

ABSTRACT

Background: Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is the most common pathological type in adults with nephrotic syndrome. Many target antigens have been discovered. However, dual antigen-positive IMN patients are very rare, with only a few such cases being briefly described in various studies. There is no specific study on the clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of dual antigen-positive IMN patients, and the disease characteristics of such patients remain unclear. Methods: Immunohistochemical staining of PLA2R, THSD7A, and NELL-1 was conducted on kidney tissue samples obtained from patients diagnosed with IMN. Simultaneously, the presence of corresponding serum antibodies was determined. Patients exhibiting positivity for dual antigens were included in the study, identified either through tissue staining or serum antibody detection. We retrospectively collected their clinical, pathological, and follow-up data and measured their serum antibody levels at multiple time points. Additionally, the same type of dual antigen-positive IMN cases reported in the literature were reviewed to extract clinical, pathological, and prognostic information. We compared the data for all of the above dual antigen-positive and PLA2R single-positive IMN cases at our center. Results: We identified 6 IMN patients with dual antigen positivity at our center, approximately 0.7% of whole MN series; the previous literature reports 43 IMN patients with dual antigen positivity, the proportion ranged from 0.2% to 2.8%. The IgG1 positivity rate in the renal tissue of the dual antigen-positive patients at our center was significantly lower than that of dual antigen-positive patients previously reported (16.7% vs. 100.0%, p=0.015), but there was no significant difference in clinical or prognostic aspects. Patients with dual antigen positivity reported at our center and in the literature were combined and compared with PLA2R single-positive IMN reported at our center. Compared with PLA2R single-positive IMN patients, dual antigen-positive IMN patients had a higher renal tissue IgG1 positivity rate (58.3% vs. 22.3%, p=0.016), and the time required to achieve remission was longer [13.5 (3.3,35.0) vs. 3.0 (1.0,8.0), p=0.052]. Overall, The changes in urine protein were consistent with the changes in serum PLA2R antibody levels in dual antigen-positive IMN patients. Conclusions: For patients with primary membranous nephropathy who did not attain remission following prolonged treatment, multiple target antigen staining should still be actively performed, even with positivity for the PLA2R target antigen.

ABSTRACT

Escherichia coli is one of the most frequent causes of gastro-intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases in animals and humans. Due to overuse and misuse of antibiotics, recent years have seen a rapidly increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant (AR) Escherichia coli globally; particularly, AR E. coli from farm animal-associated sources and its antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are becoming a global concern, with clinical negative effects on both human and animal health. The aim of this review was to explore the prevalence trends of AR E. coli from farm animals, waste treatment, and aquatic environments. The disinfection methods of AR E. coli and possible alternatives to antibiotics were also highlighted. The current review highlights that the prevalence of AR E. coli from food animals, products, and animal waste is increasing at an alarming rate, but is reduced at waste treatment plants. Ultraviolet (UV) treatment, surface plasma oxidation, and biochar are commonly used to effectively eliminate AR E. coli. Some probiotics, plant extracts, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are arousing interest as promising alternatives to antibiotics to fight against AR E. coli. The current review suggests that AR E. coli from farm animal-associated sources is prevalent and poses a serious global threat to public health. This review provides an avenue for further research, development, and application of novel strategies to minimize antibiotic resistance in E. coli of farm animal origin.

ABSTRACT

Red wine is a well-known alcoholic beverage, and is known to have phenolic compounds (PCs), which contribute to its antioxidant activity and have other beneficial advantages for human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the simulated gastro-intestinal digestion and the Caco-2 transepithelial transport assay on the PCs, bioavailability, and the antioxidant capacity of red wines. The contents of PCs in red wine were significantly reduced during most of the digestion phases. Phenolic acid had the greatest permeability, while the flavonols had the weakest. The bioavailability of PCs ranged from 2.08 to 24.01%. The result of the partial least squares structural equation model showed that the three phenols were positively correlated with the antioxidant activity of red wine. The contribution of anthocyanins was the largest (0.8667).

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has had negative effects on people's mental health worldwide, especially for those who live in large cities. Studies have reported that urban greenspace may help lessen these adverse effects, but more research that explicitly considers urban landscape pattern is needed to understand the underlying processes. Thus, this study was designed to examine whether the resident sentiments in Beijing, China changed before and during the pandemic, and to investigate what urban landscape attributes - particularly greenspace - might contribute to the sentiment changes. We conducted sentiment analysis based on 25,357 geo-tagged microblogs posted by residents in 51 neighborhoods. We then compared the resident sentiments in 2019 (before the COVID-19) with those in 2020 (during the COVID-19) using independent sample t-tests, and examined the relationship between resident sentiments and urban greenspace during the COVID-19 pandemic phases using stepwise regression. We found that residents' sentiments deteriorated significantly from 2019 to 2020 in general, and that urban sentiments during the pandemic peak times showed an urban-suburban trend that was determined either by building density or available greenspace. Although our analysis included several other environmental and socioeconomic factors, none of them showed up as a significant factor. Our study suggests the effects of urban greenspace and building density on residents' sentiments increased during the COVID-19 pandemic and that not all green spaces are equal. Increasing greenspace, especially within and near neighborhoods, seems critically important to helping urban residents to cope with public health emergencies such as global pandemics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hydrogels loaded with antimicrobial agents have been widely used for treating infected wound defects. However, hydrogels derived from a porcine dermal extracellular matrix (PADM), containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), have not yet been studied. Therefore, we investigated the therapeutic effect of an AgNP-impregnated PADM (AgNP-PADM) hydrogel on the treatment of infected wounds. METHODS: An AgNP-PADM hydrogel was synthesized by embedding AgNPs into a PADM hydrogel. We examined the porosity, moisture retention, degradation, antibacterial properties, cytotoxicity, antioxidant properties, and ability of the PADM and AgNP-PADM hydrogels to treat infected wounds in animals. RESULTS: The PADM and AgNP-PADM hydrogels were pH sensitive, which made them flow dynamically and solidify under acidic and neutral conditions, respectively. The hydrogels also exhibited porous network structures, satisfactory moisture retention, and slow degradation. Additionally, the AgNP-PADM hydrogel showed a slow and sustained release of AgNPs for at least 7 days without the particle size changing. Thus, the AgNPs exhibited adequate antibacterial ability, negligible toxicity, and antioxidant properties in vitro. Moreover, the AgNP-PADM hydrogel promoted angiogenesis and healed infected skin defects in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: The AgNP-PADM hydrogel is a promising bioderived antibacterial material for clinical application to infected wound dressings.

ABSTRACT

The overuse of antibiotics in food animals has led to the development of bacterial resistance and the widespread of resistant bacteria in the world. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in food animals are currently considered emerging contaminants, which are a serious threat to public health globally. The current situation of ARB and ARGs from food animal farms, manure, and the wastewater was firstly covered in this review. Potential risks to public health were also highlighted, as well as strategies (including novel technologies, alternatives, and administration) to fight against bacterial resistance. This review can provide an avenue for further research, development, and application of novel antibacterial agents to reduce the adverse effects of antibiotic resistance in food animal farms.

ABSTRACT

Game-based learning supported by mobile intelligence technology has promoted the renewal of teaching and learning models. Herein, a model of Question-Observation-Doing-Explanation (QODE) based on smart phones was constructed and applied to science learning during school disruption in COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, from the theoretical perspective of cognitive-affective theory of learning with media, Bandura's motivation theory and community of inquiry model, self-report measure was used to verify the effect of students' scientific self-efficacy and cognitive anxiety on science engagement. A total of 357 valid questionnaires were used for structural equation model research. The results indicated that two types of scientific self-efficacy, as indicated by scientific learning ability and scientific learning behavior, were negatively associated with cognitive anxiety. In addition, cognitive anxiety was also negatively correlated to four types of science engagement, as indicated by cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, behavioral engagement, and social engagement through smartphone interactions. These findings provide further evidence for game-based learning promoted by smart phones, contributing to a deeper understanding of the associations between scientific self-efficacy, cognitive anxiety, and science engagement. This study points out that the QODE model is suitable for implementing smart mobile devices to students' science learning.

ABSTRACT

With the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization, atmospheric pollution has become a major issue, restricting the sustainable development of the urban environment. Since 2013, Beijing has been among China's most seriously affected regions in terms of haze pollution. Atmospheric pollution is closely linked to land use, particularly the spatial patterns of green and urban land. Therefore, the quantification of the relationship between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration and its driving factors in Beijing is of considerable significance for environmental management and spatial epidemiological studies. A land use regression (LUR) model was constructed to simulate the spatio-temporal distribution of PM2.5 concentration. In this study, the independent variables (driving factors) included land use, meteorological factors, population, roads, the digital elevation model, and the normalized difference vegetation index. The five models had adjusted R2 of 0.887, 0.770, 0.742, 0.877, and 0.798, respectively. Land use and meteorological factors were the main factors affecting PM2.5 concentration. The driving factors of land use on a large scale and roads on a small scale had a significant impact on PM2.5 emissions. Beijing's PM2.5 concentrations in 2015 showed clear spatio-temporal characteristics. The highest (lowest) average PM2.5 concentration was recorded in winter (summer). In terms of spatial distribution, PM2.5 concentrations showed a "low in the northwest and high in the southeast" trend. The most polluted areas were mainly distributed in the central city and the southeastern and southwestern regions. The PM2.5 concentration boundary was essentially consistent with the boundary of land use type. Different land use types promoted or inhibited PM2.5 concentrations, with a difference of more than 20 µg/m3 PM2.5 between the two land use categories. Thus, PM2.5 concentrations should be controlled by optimizing the spatial and temporal patterns of land use.

ABSTRACT

Industrial wastewater is one of the three industrial wastes. If substandard industrial wastewater is discharged into the environment, there will be a serious impact on the environmental quality. Excessive emissions also indicate that water resources utilization is unreasonable. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the changing trends and influencing factors of industrial wastewater discharge in order to effectively conserve resources and improve the environmental quality. In this study, the spatial autocorrelation and the environmental Kuznets curve were used to study the spatial-temporal changes and characteristics of industrial wastewater discharge at the provincial scale and prefectural scale in China in 2004-2015. Then, the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index was used to analyze the influencing factors of wastewater discharge in this period. China's total industrial wastewater discharge showed a trend of increasing at the beginning and then decreasing, and more than half provinces or cities show this trend of decoupling from economic development. Moreover, wastewater discharge was higher in the east region and lower in the west region at both the provincial scale and prefectural scale, but the aggregation degree on the prefectural scale is more obvious than that on the provincial scale. The technical effect has a general inhibitory effect on industrial wastewater discharge, but it also promoted the discharge in a few cities; the structure effect on industrial wastewater discharge has generally changed from promotion to inhibition during the study period; and economic effect and population effect were mainly to promote industrial wastewater discharge. Therefore, a few cities should accelerate technology upgrading and industrial restructuring in recent years in order to change the promoting effect, and most cities need to strengthen the implementation of economic measures and improve the residents' environmental awareness.

ABSTRACT

At present, construction of rural domestic waste treatment facilities is seriously lagging, and in many cases, treatment facilities do not yet exist in some villages of China. Serious rural waste pollution has not only impacted the quality of surface water and groundwater but also the atmosphere and the living environment of farmers of China. There are relatively few studies of rural domestic waste pollution, especially with respect to the spatio-temporal dynamic pattern of rural domestic waste discharge. Using survey data and income per capita, we calculated rural domestic waste discharge per capita per day. From this, we calculated provincial rural domestic waste discharge. According to our study, rural domestic waste discharge was 1.42 × 108 t/year in 2000. This number increased to 2.3 × 108 t/year in 2006 and to 2.47 × 108 t/year in 2010. Rural domestic waste increased dramatically while the actual rural population and the proportion of the rural population declined. When examining the eight regions, the rural domestic waste discharge of northeastern China, Qinghai-Tibet, middle China, and southwestern China had increased dramatically, while that of northern China, southern China, and eastern China increased relatively slowly. The economies of northern China, southern China, and eastern China are more developed; their rural domestic waste discharge has been high since 2000 and has continued to increase slowly. In northeastern China, Qinghai-Tibet, middle China, and southwestern China, rural domestic waste discharge was low in 2000; however, in the ten-year period from 2000 to 2010, their rural domestic waste discharge increased dramatically.

ABSTRACT

Western China has experienced rapid urbanization since the Chinese reform process began in the late 1970s. It is essential to study the spatiotemporal patterns of warming induced by historical and future urban expansion and to evaluate adaptation strategies for the Chengdu-Chongqing metropolitan region (CCMR) in western China. The observed urban heat island intensity was ~1.5K in July 2009-2011. We employed the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model using real and projected urban land-use data to simulate near-surface air temperatures for a crop, urban in 2010 and urban in 2030 scenarios in summer over the CCMR. The difference between urban 2010 and cropland scenarios is 0.93K. Warming induced by urban development in 2010-2030 is in the range of 1-1.5K, but warming induced by future urban development will be less intense than historical warming over eastern China. We increased roof albedo to 0.8 to assess the difference in near-surface air temperature between cool roofs (CR) and urban 2030 scenarios, which represents the maximum potential impact of CR; we also assessed the cooling caused by green roofs (GR) (i.e., the difference between the GR and urban 2030 scenarios). Greater cooling occurs during the day due to reflection of solar radiation by CR and additional water evaporation by GR. We provided an evaluation criterion, cooling efficiency (CE), to measure the local performances of CR and GR. CE represents the local cooling capability based on urban warming rather than absolute cooling over a larger spatial scale. CE reveals a lower nocturnal cooling capability, which poses a significant challenge to the applications of CR and GR at night. CR has a better cooling capability across CCMR than GR, only when roof albedo of CR exceeds 0.68. Measures enacted should be appropriately adjusted to optimize for cost, technology and energy savings.

ABSTRACT

Rice is a staple food by an increasing number of people in China. As more issues have arisen in China due to rice contaminated by cadmium (Cd), Cd contamination in arable soils has become a severe problem. In China, many studies have examined Cd contamination in arable soils on a national scale, but little studies have focused on the distribution of Cd in paddy fields. This study explored the spatial pattern of Cd in paddy soils in China, made a preliminary evaluation of the potential risk, and identified the most critically contaminated regions based on the domestic rough rice trade flow. The results showed that Cd concentrations in paddy soils in China ranged from 0.01 to 5.50 mg/kg, with a median value of 0.23 mg/kg. On average, the highest Cd concentrations were in Hunan (0.73 mg/kg), Guangxi (0.70 mg/kg), and Sichuan (0.46 mg/kg) provinces. Cd concentrations in paddy soils in central and western regions were higher than those in eastern regions, especially the southeastern coastal regions. Of the administrative regions, Cd standard exceedance rate was 33.2 %, and the heavy pollution rate was 8.6 %. Regarding to Cd of paddy soil, soil environmental quality was better in Northeast China Plain than in Yangtze River Basin and southeastern coastal region. Mining activities were the main anthropogenic pollution source of Cd in Chinese paddy soil. Based on rice trade, more of the Chinese population would be exposed to Cd through intake of rice produced in Hunan province. Certain regions that output rice, especially Hunan province, should be given priority in the management and control of Cd contamination in paddy soil.

ABSTRACT

Audition and vision both convey spatial information about the environment, but much less is known about mechanisms of auditory spatial cognition than visual spatial cognition. Human cortex contains >20 visuospatial map representations but no reported auditory spatial maps. The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) contains several of these visuospatial maps, which support visuospatial attention and short-term memory (STM). Neuroimaging studies also demonstrate that parietal cortex is activated during auditory spatial attention and working memory tasks, but prior work has not demonstrated that auditory activation occurs within visual spatial maps in parietal cortex. Here, we report both cognitive and anatomical distinctions in the auditory recruitment of visuotopically mapped regions within the superior parietal lobule. An auditory spatial STM task recruited anterior visuotopic maps (IPS2-4, SPL1), but an auditory temporal STM task with equivalent stimuli failed to drive these regions significantly. Behavioral and eye-tracking measures rule out task difficulty and eye movement explanations. Neither auditory task recruited posterior regions IPS0 or IPS1, which appear to be exclusively visual. These findings support the hypothesis of multisensory spatial processing in the anterior, but not posterior, superior parietal lobule and demonstrate that recruitment of these maps depends on auditory task demands.

ABSTRACT

The frontal lobes control wide-ranging cognitive functions; however, functional subdivisions of human frontal cortex are only coarsely mapped. Here, functional magnetic resonance imaging reveals two distinct visual-biased attention regions in lateral frontal cortex, superior precentral sulcus (sPCS) and inferior precentral sulcus (iPCS), anatomically interdigitated with two auditory-biased attention regions, transverse gyrus intersecting precentral sulcus (tgPCS) and caudal inferior frontal sulcus (cIFS). Intrinsic functional connectivity analysis demonstrates that sPCS and iPCS fall within a broad visual-attention network, while tgPCS and cIFS fall within a broad auditory-attention network. Interestingly, we observe that spatial and temporal short-term memory (STM), respectively, recruit visual and auditory attention networks in the frontal lobe, independent of sensory modality. These findings not only demonstrate that both sensory modality and information domain influence frontal lobe functional organization, they also demonstrate that spatial processing co-localizes with visual processing and that temporal processing co-localizes with auditory processing in lateral frontal cortex.

ABSTRACT

As a promising candidate to replace the brittle and expensive transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) conductor, the use of silver nanowire (AgNW) networks still involves issues such as high-temperature post-treatments and poor substrate adhesion for industrial application. Here a room-temperature soldering and one-step solution method is developed to achieve high-performance Ag nanowire transparent conductive films (TCFs). A nonconductive binder is prepared from poly(dopamine) and alginic acid which contains abundant catechol and carboxylic acid functional groups. The drying of the binder on the Ag nanowire percolation networks induces tighter contact among the nanowires and strong adhesion to the substrate, simultaneously enhancing the electrical and mechanical properties without a high-temperature annealing process. As a result, a highly conductive and bendable AgNW film is demonstrated on a low-cost polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) substrate, showing an 89% optical transmittance at λ = 550 nm and a sheet resistance of 16.3 Ohm sq(-1). Its optical and electrical performances are superior to those obtained from the reported indium tin oxide (ITO) films. Moreover, the AgNW film exhibits strong adhesion to the substrate, maintaining its conductivity after 100 tape tests, and it still resists the tape test even after exposure to solvent for several hours. Most importantly, the film shows good reliability during long-term 85 °C/85% RH (relative humidity) aging, which has been rarely investigated although it is a critical requirement for industrial application. The advanced and wide-ranging features of the prepared AgNW film greatly contribute to its use as a transparent electrode in multifunctional flexible electronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Auditory spatial attention serves important functions in auditory source separation and selection. Although auditory spatial attention mechanisms have been generally investigated, the neural substrates encoding spatial information acted on by attention have not been identified in the human neocortex. We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments to identify cortical regions that support auditory spatial attention and to test 2 hypotheses regarding the coding of auditory spatial attention: 1) auditory spatial attention might recruit the visuospatial maps of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) to create multimodal spatial attention maps; 2) auditory spatial information might be encoded without explicit cortical maps. We mapped visuotopic IPS regions in individual subjects and measured auditory spatial attention effects within these regions of interest. Contrary to the multimodal map hypothesis, we observed that auditory spatial attentional modulations spared the visuotopic maps of IPS; the parietal regions activated by auditory attention lacked map structure. However, multivoxel pattern analysis revealed that the superior temporal gyrus and the supramarginal gyrus contained significant information about the direction of spatial attention. These findings support the hypothesis that auditory spatial information is coded without a cortical map representation. Our findings suggest that audiospatial and visuospatial attention utilize distinctly different spatial coding schemes.
