ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment in adolescents with panic disorder (PD). This follow-up study consists of 30 adolescents with PD without agoraphobia, aged 14-17 (15.53 ± .97). They were evaluated with Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children Present, also the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were administered at baseline, at the end of the 4th and 12th weeks of treatment. EMDR therapy which is an eight-phase treatment approach composed of standardized protocols and procedures was applied for 12 weeks, one session per week. The baseline mean of the total PAS score decreased from 40.06 to 13.13 at fourth week and 1.2 at the end of 12th week of treatment. In addition, BAI score decreased significantly from 33.67 to 13.83 at 4 weeks and 5.31 at the end of 12th week of treatment. Overall, our results underscore the effectiveness of EMDR in adolescents with PD. Moreover, the current study suggests that EMDR may represent an effective intervention technique for PD in adolescents to protect against relapses and to overcome a fear of future attacks.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to research the probable prevalence of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) in primary school children in Edirne City and the relationships with their sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: The sample of our study was composed of 2,174 children who were educated in primary schools in second, third, and fourth grades in the academic year 2013-2014 in Edirne City. The teachers and parents of these children were given Specific Learning Difficulties Symptom Scale, Learning Disabilities Symptoms Checklist (teacher and parent forms), and sociodemographic data forms to fill in. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the risk factors for SLD. RESULTS: Our study revealed that the probable prevalence of SLD was 13.6%; 17% for boys and 10.4% for girls. Reading impairment was 3.6%, writing impairment was 6.9%, and mathematic impairment was 6.5%. We determined that consanguineous marriages, low income, history of neonatal jaundice were found as risks for SLD; born by caesarean, developmental delay of walking, and history of neonatal jaundice were found as risks for mathematic impairment. A history of learning difficulties of parents was a risk factor for forming SLD and subtypes. CONCLUSION: Our findings were consistent with other study results about the prevalence of SLD. The relationships between the probable prevalence rates and sociodemographic data were discussed.

ABSTRACT

If dyslexic individuals have the ability to express themselves in different ways, particularly in the field of modern graphic design, would they be a favoured group in creating the extraordinary and outstanding ideas that are required in communication design? The study group consisted of 20 primary school dyslexics between ages of 7-12 and 20 non-dyslexics serving as a control group. A jury with four specialists evaluated the drawings gathered from the 40 participants. Even though we might not say surely that the dyslexics are the best possible candidates for communication design education, based on the statistical results we have concluded that they should be among the potential candidates for both general communication design education and for more specific minor study areas such as icon design.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To report experience of gender (re)assignment in genotypic female (46XX) patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (f-CAH), a difficult and stressful experience if complicated with delayed presentation and inadvertent assignment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1983 and 2002, 70 patients with f-CAH were counselled for gender assignment. The age at diagnosis and operation, the degree of virilization, parental consanguinity, the gender preference of the families, and the factors governing the decision-making process were determined. RESULTS: Forty-one (59%) patients presented after the neonatal period. All parents had already assumed or were advised of a gender for their children, based on the suggestive appearance of the external genitalia. Consequently, 49 patients were reared as female and 21 as "male". Only nine of these "males" could be reassigned as females (mean age at presentation 7.87 months, sd 10.42). Twelve children had to be reared as "male"(mean age at presentation 55.8 months, sd 32.42) in compliance with the parents' and the study group's decision, and appropriate masculinizing reconstructive surgery was undertaken. The difference in the mean age of those reassigned as female and those who remained "male" was significant (P < 0.001). The parental consanguinity rate among the families was especially high in the 'male' patients. CONCLUSIONS It is extremely difficult to correct the gender of patients with f-CAH when they present at >2.5 years old. Furthermore, the delay in diagnosis and the male bias in choice of gender in our population might be a result of strong social pressures on families, influenced by cultural, traditional and economic factors.
