ABSTRACT

Early after irradiation (2 Gy) white male rats were given sulfate mineral water, sulfate mineral water with silicon, iodine-containing mineral water (iodine concentration 30 mg/l). It was found that sulfate mineral water alone or with silicon reduces the number of endocrine Leidig's cells, inhibits their functional activity, lowers blood level of testosterone. These effects were not observed after intake of iodine-containing mineral water.

ABSTRACT

The thymus of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients was exposed to combined action of bitemporal UHF electric field and decimeter waves to study immunomodulating effect of the combination. Biochemical, immunological and endocrinological findings during the patients follow-up gave evidence for conclusion on activation of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-thymic axis. A response was achieved in RA seronegative variant with concomitant synovitis. This may be due to genetic factors.

ABSTRACT

Bitemporal UHF electric field is shown to enhance glucocorticoid adrenal function unlike inhibition of the thyroid function suppressing a primary immune response (PIR) in the productive phase. The combined exposure to bitemporal UHF electric field and decimeter waves of the adrenals doubles glucocorticoid synthesis abolishing the inhibitory action of the UHF therapy on thyroid function resultant in much more suppressed PIR. Both modalities inhibit thymic production. Decimeter waves alone are less effective. The exposure of the thyroid to decimeter waves initiated PIR by 2.5-fold activation of medullar lymphocytes and by a 80% increase in the thymic function. No response was achieved in combined action on the thyroid of the electric field and decimeter waves.

ABSTRACT

Assessment of thyroid function and antitoxic protein-synthesizing function of hepatocytes at light microscopic and ultrastructural levels revealed differences in the effects of natural and prepared iodine water under similar iodine-ion concentration (14 mg/l). The varieties seem to result from the presence of ion-salt base in the natural water.

ABSTRACT

The function of humoral regulatory systems was studied in hypertensive patients. Relevant dysfunctions appeared related to hemodynamic types. In the hyperkinetic hemodynamic type the greatest benefit for pressor and depressor regulation was achieved with square-wave impulse 10 Hz currents under the orbital method, in the hypokinetic--with sinusoidal modulated currents at 100 Hz modulation frequency. 30 Hz sinusoidal modulated currents under orbital method are able to bring about a marked decrease in both pressor and depressor hormones levels in hypokinetic pattern of hemodynamics producing short-term hypotensive effects. Humoral action of low-frequency impulse electrotherapy depends on the current characteristics, frequency and site of exposure.

ABSTRACT

Thirty-five stage I-II essential hypertension subjects aged 25-63 were examined after the 1st and 10th acupuncture to clarify the effect of a single procedure and a course of acupuncture treatment on blood ACTH, STH, TTH, beta-endorphine, neurotensin, thyroxine, aldosterone, hydrocortisone and plasma renin activity. The hormonal spectrum was determined by radioimmunoassay using special kits. The blood was obtained before acupuncture, 5 min after introduction of the needles, immediately and 30 min after their removal. It is shown that acupuncture-related decline of arterial pressure occurs in participation of pituitary and adrenal hormones as well as polypeptides beta-endorphine and neurotensin.

ABSTRACT

Oxidative and biosynthetic processes in the myocardium, blood serum thyroid hormones, thyroid and adrenal morphometric characteristics were investigated in rabbits upon the exposure of their thyroid projection zone to decimeter waves (460 MHz, 10 mW/cm2), administration of mercazolil (150 mg) given in courses and upon combined use of these modalities. Mercazolil was found to modulate the responses of the studied systems to the waves. This may be explained by feasible regulatory effect of the waves on mercazolil-induced changes in rabbit functions.

ABSTRACT

It has been established that intake of waters identical by Br concentrations (250 mg/l) but different by an ion-salt base leads to various structural changes of the thyroid at the tissue, cellular and subcellular levels. Artificial Br-containing water induces more pronounced shifts correlating with T3 and T4, blood concentrations. The ion-salt base was found essential in the mechanism of action of Br-containing water.

ABSTRACT

The trend in immune and hormonal parameters in thyroid, adrenal and transcerebral exposure to microwaves with intensity of 120, 240 and 480 mW/cm2 was studied in rabbits. The thyroid exposure to 120 and 240 mW/cm2 microwaves lead to immunostimulation, while adrenal and transcerebral one induced immunosuppression. The exposure to 240 mW/cm2 and 480 mW/cm2 microwaves resulted in damage to the tissues in 56 and 100% of the animals, respectively. The latter irradiation appeared lethal for 25% of the rabbits. 120 mW/cm2 MV proved safe as there were no signs of edema and necrosis seen with more intensive microwaves. The authors suggest to employ microwaves of 120 mW/cm2 intensity for endocrine glands irradiation to produce an immunomodulating effect.
