ABSTRACT

The dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is a relatively uncommon locally invasive neoplasm. This report describes the case of a 20-year-old Caucasian female patient who was diagnosed with an intraosseous DGCT in the left molar region of the mandible. Radiographic analysis revealed a well-circumscribed radiolucent lesion with focal radiopacity. Segmental resection of the mandible was performed by means of piezoelectric surgery. The histopathological examination yielded islands of odontogenic epithelium with clusters of ghost cells and dysplastic dentin, thus enabling the identification of the lesion as DGCT. Long-term surveillance of patients with intraosseous DGCTs is mandatory in order to detect in time any signs of recurrence. A literature update concerning intraosseous DGCTs is also provided.

ABSTRACT

This report describes the prosthodontic rehabilitation of a partially edentulous patient by means of a maxillary implant-supported removable dental prosthesis and mandibular telescopic crown prosthesis. Due to the patient's contributory medical history for epilepsy and deep vein thrombosis, clinical management considerations are outlined along with an evidence-based, medically oriented treatment sequence concerning the surgical and prosthodontic stages of the case.

ABSTRACT

Location of the crown margin, marginal fit, crown material, and crown contour all impact periodontal tissues. This literature review evaluated available data on their relationship with the periodontium and also examines whether any changes in established knowledge and/or perspectives have been published during the past 30 years. Electronic and manual searches conducted for in vivo investigations in the English and German literature for 1953 to 2009 provided 64 studies. Findings indicate that the supragingival location remains the most advantageous from the periodontal point of view; esthetic demands, however, dictated an intracrevicular location of the margin in the anterior zone. Metal-ceramic and all-ceramic crowns show a clinically acceptable marginal fit. Ceramic materials have the lowest plaque-retaining capacity, and a normal crown contour guarantees satisfactory periodontal health and esthetics. The accompanying data confirm the results reported in the literature, revealing that nothing has substantially changed, thereby supporting current approaches.
