ABSTRACT

Most women are unprepared for the changes in their sexual health and functioning that occur during pregnancy and after childbirth. The aim of our study is to provide a comprehensive summary, based on international publications and currently available Hungarian research, of how normative changes during pregnancy, which have somatic and psychological effects, affect the sexual functioning of individuals and couples. We will review the characteristics of sexual health during pregnancy, focusing on how the sexual activity and interest of expectant mothers change in each trimester as pregnancy progresses, what the typical sexual dysfunctions are and how couples' sexual habits and positional choices change, what the typical concerns and beliefs are that distract couples from having sex. Among the postpartum effects, our study will focus on how sexual functioning is affected by the mode of delivery, perineal trauma and episiotomy. It will also look at the effects of breastfeeding and hormonal changes on sexual life. Recommendations for prevention and intervention of reproductive sexual problems will be made.
