ABSTRACT

The objective of the present work was to describe the poorly known history of the development of the nomenclature of glomus tumours (chemodectomas) of the base of the skull, elucidate etiology and pathogenesis of these neoplasms. The authors present a chronological table illustrating the progress of etiological and pathogenetic studies as well as the surgical treatment of the tumours. The results of analysis and discussion of the controversial issues of the nomenclature are reported.

ABSTRACT

An analysis is submitted of data from the relevant published literature on the role the cuprum-containing proteins have in the mechanism of cell antioxidant defence against toxic action of intermediants of the one-electron impact of oxygen. The possibility is shown of correction of the state of the antioxidant system with one of such proteins, namely ceruloplasmin, to enhance stability of the organism of test animals in order that they might be able to withstand physical loads.

ABSTRACT

On the basis of examination of 30 patients with the diagnosis of paragangliomas of the base of the skull the following main computed tomographic signs of this group of tumors were revealed: destruction of bone structures of the base of the posterior and middle cranial fossae, erosion and widening of the jugular foramen; diminished pneumatization of the air cells of the mastoid process; extracranial simultaneous with intracranial spreading of the tumor. A classification of paragangliomas is suggested.

ABSTRACT

Biochemical examination of 15 patients with paragangliomas (PG) of the base of the skull was conducted. The content of epinephrine, and norepinephrine, dopamine, and dopa in urine and the content of serotonin and histamine in blood and tumor tissue were studied. Comparison of the biochemical findings with the vegetative symptomatology allowed 3 groups of PG to be distinguished: catecholamine-secreting, serotonin-secreting, and hormone-inactive. The group of serotonin-secreting tumors of the base of the skull has not been described in the literature. The conducted research shows that tests for biogenic amines must be performed not only for diagnostic purposes but also for prognosticating possible surgical complications.
