ABSTRACT

The effect of a new original hypoglycemic peroral drug adiachrome on the lipid metabolism was studied in experimental animals with alloxan induced diabetes. The drug action was evaluated in terms of the levels of ketone bodies, lipoprotein complexes, cholesterol, and malonic dialdehyde in the blood serum. Administered in a dose of 15 mg/kg, adiachrome decreased the level of ketone bodies, lipoproteins, cholesterol, and malonic dialdehyde in the blood serum in dynamics of the model pathology studied.

ABSTRACT

The monosporic plating of the avermectin-producing strain Streptomyces avermitilis VKM Ac-1301 with low activity showed the heterogeneity of the population. By selection of natural mutants the authors obtained a strain synthesizing up to 60 micrograms avermectin B1 per ml of culture liquid. The maximum avermectin yield was observed in the medium containing 7% glucose after 100-120 h of culture growth.

ABSTRACT

Cardiolipin antibodies are detected in the sera from patients having a wide range of clinical manifestations, including venous and arterial thrombosis, obstetric abnormality, damaged CHS and diseased vascular wall. To clarify the clinical value of cardiolipin antibodies, 21 patients with non-specific aortic arteritis were studied. The antibodies were determined by enzyme immunoassay. Their higher levels were found in 5 (24%) patients. The patients who were positive for cardiolipin antibodies showed a significant increase in the incidence of occlusive lesions (p less than 0.001) and a moderate increase in that of valvular heart diseases. The findings suggest that cardiolipin antibodies might contribute to the pathogenesis of non-specific of aortic arteritis.

ABSTRACT

The results of a cooperative randomized study performed in Poland, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and the Soviet Union on the treatment of lung cancer patients are presented. Three hundred and sixty patients were treated only surgically, 360 patients received combined therapy. Adjuvant chemotherapy was performed using 3 preparations (cyclophosphane, methotrexate, 5-fluorouracil) within 2-3 weeks after operation (first course) followed by another 3 courses at intervals of 8-9 weeks. The combined therapy increased the 5-year survival rate of patients with Stage III squamous cell carcinoma with thoracic lymph node metastases. Better results were achieved when 3-4 courses of adjuvant chemotherapy were performed. In patients with Stage I-II squamous cell carcinoma of the lung without regional lymph node metastases the used regimen of combined therapy had no significant effect.

ABSTRACT

The effect of chemical foam suppressors of various classes on the intensity of Streptomyces rimosus respiration, concentrations of dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide and gas levels in the fermentation broth of oxytetracycline was studied. Its was shown that addition of the foam suppressors, as a rule, resulted in a decreased rate of the oxygen mass transfer due to the decreased surface of the phase contact gas-liquid. This decrease was not so significant as that in case of uninhibited intensity of the fermentation broth foaming. A different character of the effect of different foam suppressors on the biosynthetic process was noted. The effect of the foam suppressors was decreased by their regular addition in low amounts.

ABSTRACT

The data on the effect of chemical foam suppressors of various classes on the morphogenesis of 2 strains of Streptomyces rimosus are presented. Correlation between the age of the culture and its reaction to unfavourable conditions is confirmed. During the first 24 hours of the growth the culture is most sensitive to low aeration rates, addition of the foam suppressors, fat deficiency in the medium. Among the foam suppressors used propinol B-400 had the most significant effect on the cells: destruction of the cell coating, marked changes in the morphogenesis and nucleocytosis of the hyphae of the second generation responsible mainly for the antibiotic biosynthesis. A more active strain was more subject to the foam suppressor toxic effect.
