ABSTRACT

We report on the first, to the best of our knowledge, solid-state dual-comb mode-locked laser that simultaneously operates in different dispersion regimes. Due to the intrinsic polarization multiplexing in a birefringent Yb:Ca3NbGa3Si2O14 (Yb:CNGS) gain medium, the laser emits two cross-polarized pulse trains with a repetition rate offset of ∼ 4.8 kHz from a single cavity. We obtain dual pulse generation with a 20-fold difference in duration by setting the net cavity group delay dispersion to cross zero across the emission band of the employed gain medium. While the duration of the soliton-like pulses experiencing anomalous dispersion amounts to 117 fs, the second laser output, which is spectrally located in the normal dispersion region, is strongly chirped with a pulse duration of 2360 fs.

ABSTRACT

Low temperature magnetic properties of BiFeO3 powders sintered by flash and spark plasma sintering were studied. An anomaly observed in the magnetic measurements at 250 K proves the clear existence of a phase transition. This transformation, which becomes less well-defined as the grain sizes are reduced to nanometer scale, was described with regard to a magneto-elastic coupling. Furthermore, the samples exhibited enhanced ferromagnetic properties as compared with those of a pellet prepared by the conventional solid-state technique, with both a higher coercivity field and remnant magnetization, reaching a maximum value of 1.17 kOe and 8.5 10-3 emu/g, respectively, for the specimen sintered by flash sintering, which possesses the smallest grains. The specimens also show more significant exchange bias, from 22 to 177 Oe for the specimen prepared by the solid-state method and flash sintering technique, respectively. The observed increase in this parameter is explained in terms of a stronger exchange interaction between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic grains in the case of the pellet sintered by flash sintering.

ABSTRACT

In the present work, we investigated in detail the thermal/crystallization behavior and magnetic properties of materials with Fe84.5-xCoxNb5B8.5P2 (x = 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 at.%) composition. The amorphous ribbons were manufactured on a semi-industrial scale by the melt-spinning technique. The subsequent nanocrystallization processes were carried out under different conditions (with/without magnetic field). The comprehensive studies have been carried out using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, hysteresis loop analyses, vibrating sample magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Moreover, the frequency (up to 300 kHz) dependence of power losses and permeability at a magnetic induction up to 0.9 T was investigated. On the basis of some of the results obtained, we calculated the values of the activation energies and the induced magnetic anisotropies. The X-ray diffraction results confirm the surface crystallization effect previously observed for phosphorous-containing alloys. The in situ microscopic observations of crystallization describe this process in detail in accordance with the calorimetry results. Furthermore, the effect of Co content on the phase composition and the influence of annealing in an external magnetic field on magnetic properties, including the orientation of the magnetic spins, have been studied using various magnetic techniques. Finally, nanocrystalline Fe64.5Co20Nb5B8.5P2 cores were prepared after transverse thermo-magnetic heat treatment and installed in industrially available portable heating equipment.

ABSTRACT

In this work, a detailed microstructural investigation of as-melt-spun and heat-treated Fe67Co20B13 ribbons was performed. The as-melt-spun ribbon was predominantly amorphous at room temperature. Subsequent heating demonstrated an amorphous to crystalline α-(Fe,Co) phase transition at 403 °C. In situ transmission electron microscopy observations, carried out at the temperature range of 25-500 °C and with the heating rate of 200 °C/min, showed that the first crystallized nuclei appeared at a temperature close to 370 °C. With a further increase of temperature, the volume of α-(Fe,Co) crystallites considerably increased. Moreover, the results showed that a heating rate of 200 °C/min provides for a fine and homogenous microstructure with the α-(Fe,Co) crystallites size three times smaller than when the ribbon is heated at 20 °C/min. The next step of this research concerned the influence of both the annealing time and temperature on the microstructure and coercivity of the ribbons. It was shown that annealing at 485 °C for a shorter time (2 s) led to materials with homogenous distribution of α-(Fe,Co) crystallites with a mean size of 30 nm dispersed in the residual amorphous matrix. This was reflected in the coercivity (20.5 A/m), which significantly depended on the volume fraction of crystallites, their size, and distribution.

ABSTRACT

We report on mode-locking of an Yb:Ca3NbGa3Si2O14 laser, which is pumped by a fiber-coupled single-mode laser diode. The shortest pulse duration obtained with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror is 52 fs, with 75 mW of average output power. Sub-60 fs operation tunable between 1055 and 1074 nm is achieved by employing semiconductor absorbers with different characteristics. We also demonstrate passive mode-locking results with transmissive graphene saturable absorber, reaching an 85 fs pulse duration with 23 mW output power. Moreover, we present the non-phase-matched self-frequency doubling properties of this non-centrosymmetric crystal in the femtosecond regime.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate a mode-locked (ML) femtosecond laser based on the disordered garnet crystal Tm,Ho:CNGG. Employing a single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber, pulses as short as 83 and 76 fs at 2081 nm are achieved without and with external compression, respectively. The latter represents, to the best of our knowledge, the shortest pulse duration obtained from any Ho-doped or Tm,Ho-codoped laser. The average power amounts to 67 mW at a repetition rate of 102 MHz. By analyzing the soliton ML regime, the nonlinear refractive index of Tm,Ho:CNGG is estimated to be ∼1.1×10-19 m2/W.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate a high peak power mode-locked Yb:CaF2 oscillator pumped by a single-mode laser diode. The laser operated in hybrid Kerr-lens and SESAM mode-locked regime. Its performance was optimized by varying the output coupler ratio. Pulses as short as 65 fs were generated with 0.4% transmission. Employing 5% output coupler enabled generation of 77 fs pulses with 46 kW of peak power (262 mW of average output power). We believe that such high peak powers can open a way to practical applications of single-mode diode-pumped ultrafast ytterbium lasers.

ABSTRACT

Due to their broadband nonlinear optical properties, low-dimensional materials are widely used for pulse generation in fiber and solid-state lasers. Here we demonstrate novel materials, Bi2Te2Se (BTS) and Sn-doped Bi2Te2Se (BSTS), which can be used as a universal saturable absorbers for distinct spectral regimes. The material was mechanically exfoliated from a bulk single-crystal and deposited onto a side-polished fiber. We have performed characterization of the fabricated devices and employed them in polarization-maintaining ytterbium- and erbium-doped fiber lasers. This enabled us to obtain self-starting passively Q-switched regime at 1 µm and 1.56 µm. The oscillators emitted stable, linearly polarized radiation with the highest single pulse energy approaching 692 nJ. Both lasers are characterized by the best performance observed in all-polarization maintaining Q-switched fiber lasers with recently investigated new saturable absorbers, which was enabled by a very high damage threshold of the devices. This demonstrates the great potential of the investigated materials for the ultrafast photonics community.

ABSTRACT

Intermetallic compounds with the overall formula Mn1.1Fe0.9P0.5As0.5-xGex (x varies from 0 to 0.1) were investigated in order to study their magnetocaloric effect by monitoring the adiabatic temperature change, magnetic entropy change and their relation to structural parameters. It was found that the maximum of magnetocaloric effect was achieved for x = 0.02. Adiabatic temperature change for consolidated powder was equal to 2.75 K for the magnetic field change ΔB = 1.7 T for the sample with x = 0.02. For the pure non-doped sample, this parameter is much lower: ΔTad = 1.7 K @ ΔB = 1.7 T. This result was correlated with the change of structural parameters such as lattice constants and the unit cell volume.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial diseases constitute an important component of the surgical disease burden in low- and middle-income countries. The consideration to introduce craniofacial surgery into such settings poses different questions, risks, and challenges compared with cleft or other forms of plastic surgery. We report the evolution, innovations, and challenges of a 30-year international craniofacial surgery partnership. METHODS: We retrospectively report a partnership between surgeons at the Uniwersytecki Szpital Dzieciecy in Krakow, Poland, and a North American craniofacial surgeon. We studied patient conditions, treatment patterns, and associated complications, as well as program advancements and limitations as perceived by surgeons, patient families, and hospital administrators. RESULTS: Since partnership inception in 1986, the complexity of cases performed increased gradually, with the first intracranial case performed in 1995. In the most recent 10-year period (2006-2015), 85 patients have been evaluated, with most common diagnoses of Apert syndrome, Crouzon syndrome, and single-suture craniosynostosis. In the same period, 55 major surgical procedures have been undertaken, with LeFort III midface distraction, posterior vault distraction, and frontoorbital advancement performed most frequently. Key innovations have been the employment of craniofacial distraction osteogenesis, the use of Internet communication and digital photography, and increased understanding of how craniofacial morphology may improve in the absence of surgical intervention. Ongoing challenges include prohibitive training pathways for pediatric plastic surgeons, difficulty in coordinating care with surgeons in other institutions, and limited medical and material resources. CONCLUSION: Safe craniofacial surgery can be introduced and sustained in a resource-limited setting through an international partnership.

ABSTRACT

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, the usage of black phosphorus (BP) as a saturable absorber for the mode locking of a thulium-doped fiber laser. We have experimentally shown that BP exhibits saturable absorption in the 2 µm wavelength range and supports ultrashort pulse generation. The saturable absorber was based on mechanically exfoliated BP deposited on a fiber connector tip. The laser was capable of generating 739 fs pulses centered at 1910 nm. Our results show that BP might be considered as a universal broadband saturable absorber that could successfully compete with graphene or other low-dimension nanomaterials.

ABSTRACT

We present a simple broadband gradient-index antireflective coating, fabricated directly on a single mode telecom fiber tip. A regular array of hemi-ellipsoidal protrusions significantly reduce the Fresnel reflection from the glass-air interface. The parameters of the structure were optimized with numerical simulation for the best performance at and around 1550 nm and the coating was fabricated with Direct Laser Writing. The measured reflectance decreased by a factor of 30 at 1550 nm and was below 0.28% for the 100 nm spectral band around the central wavelength. Compared to quarter wavelength antireflective coatings the demonstrated approach offers significantly reduced technological challenges, in particular processing of a single optical material with low sensitivity to imperfections in the fabrication process.
