ABSTRACT

One of the major viral respiratory diseases of cattle is parainfluenza type-3 virus infection. Attenuated live virus vaccines have been used in most countries. An experimental attempt was made to clarify the antibody response of cattle inoculated with a live vaccine in a post-tracheal position by a spray method. A significantly higher titers of antibodies in both hemagglutination inhibition and neutralization were obtained in the serum samples of animals vaccinated in this manner than those vaccinated by intramuscular injection or intranasal instillation.

ABSTRACT

We report here a patient with frequent nocturnal attacks, characterized by paroxysmal dystonic posturing of the left arm and contraction of the lower face, lasting 20-30 seconds. The attacks occurred in clusters of up to 20 spasms during the NREM stage of sleep. Interictal EEG showed clear-cut epileptic discharges in the right frontal region. Repeated ictal video-EEG recordings revealed only arousal pattern immediately before and during seizures except in those which evolved to left sided clonic hemiconvulsions. The dystonic attacks here described share many features of nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia (NPD) of Lugaresi and Cirignotta in common, including nocturnal periodic occurrence, absence of ictal EEG changes during attacks, and favorable response to CBZ, except for their unilateral nature. It was assumed that our case may be a lateralized variant of NPD and would further support the hypothesis that NPD is one particular form of frontal lobe epilepsy.

ABSTRACT

Cornexistin, a new compound demonstrating promising herbicidal activity, was purified from the culture filtrate of a newly-isolated fungus identified as Paecilomyces variotii SANK 21086. The compound was extracted with organic solvents from the culture filtrate, purified using column chromatography on Sephadex LH-20 and finally crystallized from methylene chloride. Following analysis of its physico-chemical properties it was identified to be a new compound belonging to the nonadride group. Chemical structure elucidation was conducted by analyses of various spectral data and the structure was finally confirmed by means of X-ray crystallographic analysis. Based on its herbicidal characteristics cornexistin may be classified as a postemergence herbicide active against certain young annual and perennial monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants with selective protection for corn.
