ABSTRACT

Mast cells are involved in the reaction of the organism to herpesvirus infection, which manifests by changes in their count, morphology, and function. The onset of infection is characterized by primary activation of mast cells, the peak of disease by suppressed function, and convalescence by secondary activation and stabilization of cell morphology and function. Viral infection running in the presence of immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide is characterized by deep persistent suppression of the morphology and functions of mast cells at the peak of disease.

ABSTRACT

Materials on the study of the morphofunctional state of mast cells in mouse in experimental staphylococcal infection under the conditions of cyclophosphamide-induced immunodeficiency are presented. As revealed in this study, the infectious process developing in the presence of immunodeficiency is accompanied by the profound and prolonged suppression of the morphofunctional status of mast cells and natural immunity factors at the peak of the disease.

ABSTRACT

In the process of staphylococcal infection in mice an increase in the number and functional activity of peritoneal, mesenterial and dermal basophils occurs. The preliminary activation of tissue basophils with equine serum albumin has favorable influence on the course of the infectious process, enhances the reaction of mast cells and phagocytes on the causative agent. The role played by tissue basophils in anti-infectious protection may be linked with the increased secretion of histamine producing a stimulating effect on the phagocytic mechanism of immunity.

ABSTRACT

It was shown that doxorubicin influenced the morphofunctional state of the peritoneal, mesenteric and dermal tissue basophils which was evident from changes in the total number of the mast cells and the level of their maturity, activity and ability to respond to con A and the antigen. In the late periods after the completion of the treatment with the cytostatic the quantitative changes were slightly pronounced and the functional activity remained high for 3 months. Predisposition to allergic reactions was confirmed by positive intracutaneous tests with horse serum albumin.

ABSTRACT

A single administration of cyclophosphamide in the maximally tolerable dose results in an increase in the counts of mesenterial, peritoneal, and dermal mast cells in mice, by modifying their morphological characteristics and enhancing their functional activity. This effect becomes apparent on days 2-7 of the drug injection. In the late periods after cyclophosphamide, the morphological changes in tissue basophils are less profound; their functional activity remains rather high during 3 months. Morphofunctional changes in mast cells and the results of intradermal allergic tests suggest that there is a developing predisposition to allergic reactions under the action of the cytostatic.
