ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a rare disorder which leads to a number of deformities of the fetus body. The treatment depends on the severity of the defect and the extent of the deformity. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old primigravida with a dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA) twin pregnancy was diagnosed during the first-trimester ultrasonography with fetal lower part edema of one twin caused by amniotic bands. A selective termination of the affected fetus was performed. The remainder part of the pregnancy was normal. A healthy newborn was delivered at term. After delivering the placenta, the presence of fetus papyraceus was detected. The amniotic bands were unidentifiable in the pathologist's examination. A reliable ultrasonographic diagnosis enables the detecting ABS in early pregnancy. CONCLUSION: In the case of ABS in DCDA twin pregnancy, conducting a selective termination of the affected fetus creates the opportunity for the proper development of the healthy fetus as well as reaching its full maturity. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to present the results of treating the anterior segment of the eye with amnion membrane transplantation (AMT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 16 patients were treated with amnion membrane transplantation because of: pemphigoid ocularis, combustio chaemica, ulcus corneae, keratopathia bullosa, descemetocele, symblepharon, graft disease. Histopathological investigations were performed by the use of impression cytology. RESULTS: In 4 patients we obtained only temporary improvement. In 12 patients the treatment was successful with complete reepithelialization of the cornea and the conjunctiva. The impression cytology study showed an intensive regeneration of the corneal and conjunctival epithelium.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We present data of three years experience of management and outcome of preterm labour. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 335 pregnant women with preterm labour. We analyzed the pharmacological therapy and way of labour. There were two groups of patients: I group--180 patients who had cesarean delivery, II group--155 patients who had vaginal delivery. RESULTS: It has been found 7.54% more cesarean delivery than vaginal delivery of preterm labour.

ABSTRACT

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive disorder in Caucasian population that involves the lungs, pancreas, sweat glands, intestine, liver and reproductive tract. The majority of men with CF are infertile due to a bilateral congenital absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). The purpose of the research was to evaluate the occurrence frequency of alleles of CFTR gene in patients with azoospermia. Twenty four men from sterile marriages were examined in whom spermatozoa were not found in 2-3 successive examinations of their semen. In every patient the basic concentration in blood of FSH, LH, PRL and testosterone was determined and ultrasonography of gonads, vas deferens, prostate and spermatic vesicles was performed. The INNO-LIPA CF2 test was used to the screening for the eight most frequently identified mutations in Caucasian population: DF508, G542X, N1303K, 1717-1(G- > A), W1282X, G551D, R553X i DI507. The test is based on the reverse-hybridization method. Carrier-state of one mutated allele was detected in 3 men (12.5% examined causes). In two men DF508 mutation and in one W1282X mutation were detected. The data suggest that the CFTR protein may be involved in the process of spermatogenesis apart from playing a critical role in the development of the vas deferens.

ABSTRACT

The influence of application of low-dose progesterone 4 hours before induction of ovulation by HCG on the outcome of IVF and GIFT was investigated in a bilateral study. The number of patients was 38 from both clinics for IVF and 36 for GIFT. With a pregnancy rate of 35.3% and 17.6% of ongoing pregnancies per transfer the results of the study are much better than before. The rather low number of patients and the low rate of transfers relativate these results. After GIFT an elevated abortion rate leads to only 11.1% ongoing pregnancies following a pregnancy rate of 33.3%. The effect of progesterone supplementation on the LH-peak and the endometrium should be further investigated to find new ways to increase success of IVF and GIFT treatment.

ABSTRACT

To prove the importance of anxiety as a disturbing factor during invasive sterility therapy 87 women of an IVF- and GIFT-series were investigated by a standardized anxiety inventory. We could not find any direct relations between breaking off stimulation and a striking level of anxiety. The role of anxiety as a co-factor in the different kinds of sterility management will be discussed.

ABSTRACT

Two cases of occult dermoid cysts in sterility patients were reported. In one case the follicular puncture during a gamete intra fallopian transfer (GIFT) trial led to diagnosis, in the other case it has been argued by sonography. Early diagnostic and subsequent therapeutic possibilities were discussed.

ABSTRACT

In the present paper we will report on a pregnancy following a Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT). This is a 26 years old female, treated in our sterility dispensaire for a secondary sterility since 1982. All basic hormone levels were normal. The andrological examination of her husband showed an oligozoospermia stage 2. A following hormone treatment was unsuccessful. Stimulation, monitoring and laparoscopy are demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective analysis was done in 419 children with handicaps, born 1966-1980 in a territory. In comparison with 419 children with normal development the following factors were found more often in the group with handicaps: Mother older than 30 years, brothers and sisters with handicaps, low birth weight, low placental weight, obstetric operations, vaginal labour in breech presentation, low Apgar score, neonatal reanimation, transfer in a children hospital, pathological reflexes in newborn, retardation of early development, bad social environment.

ABSTRACT

Report about 419 children with handicaps, born 1966-1980 in one territory. 9.8 per cent of these 419 children have a severe damage, not able for education. 11.9 per cent have a moderate damage and 78.3 per cent a mild one. The mental retardation is combined with damage of senses, cerebral palsy and seizures. Frequency of children with handicaps seems to decrease in the last years.

ABSTRACT

Experience obtained from 115 childbirths with catheterisation for epidural analgesia is reported in this paper. Reduction of labour pain was optimum with all patients.--The rate of CTG alterations and acidosis of foetal blood was not beyond that recordable from normal deliveries. The rate of vaginal surgery was increased to 14.8 per cent due to one patient in whom expulsion was delayed and the expulsion period thus prolonged.

ABSTRACT

Reported are 304 patients with whom programmed childbirths were introduced, between 1976 and 1978. A control group was made up of 100 women in labour who had been hospitalised for spontaneous onset of labour but then given slow drip oxytocin infusions for secondary uterine inertia. The parameters tested (time of labour, FHF behaviour, pH of umbilical artery, Apgar score, weight, length, and perinatal mortality) did not reveal any aggravated risk to mother and child. Programmed childbirth may be recommended as another important preventive step towards lower infantile morbidity.
