ABSTRACT

The levels of albumin and immunoglobulins G, A, M were determined by using nephelometry technique in the cerebrospinal fluid and serum in 14 adults with tick borne meningoencephalitis at the beginning and after four weeks of disease. Intra blood-brain synthesis of IgG, IgA, IgM was evaluated by indexes of synthesis (Tibbling formula). The blood-brain integrity was estimated by CSF/serum albumin ratio. Increased albumin and immunoglobulins G, A, M levels were demonstrated in first examination and only elevated levels of albumin and immunoglobulin M lasted after four weeks. Albumin level in cerebrospinal fluid and albumin ratio were elevated in both examinations. The serum levels of albumin and immunoglobulins were similar in first and second examination. On the basis these results we conclude that in tested patients blood-brain integrity was disturbed still after four weeks of disease.

ABSTRACT

Assessment of beta-2-microglobulin (beta-2-M) concentration in serum and urine was made in 50 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The most often noticed pathology was proteinuria. We observed a significant increase of beta-2-M concentration in serum of patients without rheumatoid factor and in patients with proteinuria. In all patients the concentration of beta-2-M in urine was significantly higher than in the controls. We did not observe any influence after treatment on beta-2-M concentration. The increase of the concentration of beta-2-M may be a marker for the early damage of kidney in RA.

ABSTRACT

Hematopoietic growth factors belong to the family of glycoproteins responsible for regulation, differentiation and proliferation of myelopoietic cells. In this paper the role of these factors in regulation of the function of phagocytic cells (granulocyte, monocyte, macrophage) is discussed on the basis of literature data.

ABSTRACT

The authors have compared the values of total and bone serum alkaline phosphatases in an osteoporotic population and a control group. The total activity of alkaline phosphatases was determined by a kinetic method at 30 degrees C and alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes were separated by agarose gel electrophoresis in presence or absence of wheat germ lectin. The authors have confirmed reported data concerning the physiological variations of alkaline phosphatases in the control group; they have therefore divided each group in several sub-populations according to age and sex in order to obtain accurate comparisons. Mean values of total and bone alkaline phosphatases were greater in the osteoporotic population than in the control group regardless of age or sex. Nevertheless, significant differences were obtained only with 50 to 75 year-old subjects (men or women) for total alkaline phosphatases and with 50 to 75 year-old women for bone alkaline phosphatase.
