ABSTRACT

According to several studies, children represent only about 2% of the patients affected by the current SARS-CoV-2, and most often, they are asymptomatic. However, there is a concern about a vascular inflammatory disease which is similar to Kawasaki disease observed in children and adolescents weeks after infection. We report a case of Kawasaki disease presented with ischemic stroke in a 14-year-old male patient following SARS-Cov-2 infection.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a neck condition that arises when the spinal cord becomes compressed due to the wear-and-tear changes that occur in the spine as we age. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 52-year-old male, who complains of neck pain, paranesthesia in upper extremities, lower back pain and bilateral calf pain, muscle weakness in the lower and upper extremities, fatigue and general body pain that started four weeks ago associated with other clinical manifestation. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine revealed canal stenosis and increased T2 signal within the spinal cord. CSM is a rare condition there are very few or no cases described in literature when CSM in C3/C4 is associated with a lack of B12 and other pathologies such as and hypoplasia of the mastoid air-cell with system maxillary sinus aplasia. CONCLUSION: The case described in the present study suggested that the incidence of CSM may be correlated with VB12 deficiency, particularly for cases in which the clinical manifestations and the imaging do not fully match.

ABSTRACT

A 24-year-old female with type 1 diabetes mellitus presented with hemiparesis induced by hypoglycemia. She was hospitalized because she has noticed a weakness of her right hand and leg three days after childbirth. On physical examination she had an expressive dysphasia and right side hemiparesis with facial drop. Hypoglycemia is rarely associated with hemiparesis and it is often overlooked, especially when it happens in patients at higher risk of other diseases frequently associated with hemiparesis. Although sporadical cases of hypoglycemia-induced hemiparesis were reported, the clear pathophysiology behind this is not well determined. However, any individual case is important in order to increase the awareness of hypoglycemia as an important etiology of this condition.

ABSTRACT

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate and compare the effects of hyaluronic acid (HA), tacrolimus (FK-506) and saline on peripheral nerve regeneration in vivo after topical application at the site of nerve repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, 48 adult male European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), ranging in weight from 2.5 to 3 kg, were randomly assigned to three experimental groups: Group I (saline), Group II (HA) and Group III (FK-506). After transection and immediate repair of the right sciatic nerve of each rabbit, the nerve repair sites were wrapped with an absorbable gelatin sponge soaked that contained saline, HA and FK-506 in Groups I, II and III, respectively. The left hind leg was used as a control. To evaluate the effects of HA and FK-506 on nerve regeneration, electrophysiological measurements were acquired at 6 and 12 weeks after nerve repair and toe-spreading index (TSI) experiments were conducted at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after nerve repair. RESULTS: Motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) was improved in Groups II and III compared to Group I, but no differences between Groups II and III were observed. After 12 weeks, however, the MNCV in Groups I, II and III was 40.04%, 51.16% and 50.42%, respectively, of that in the control group (100%). In addition, at 12 weeks, Grade 4 TSI scores were observed in Groups II and III. CONCLUSION: Electrophysiological analyses and functional evaluations based on the TSI indicate that HA and FK-506 exert similar, positive effects on nerve regeneration that are superior to those observed in response to saline treatment.
