ABSTRACT

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is an uncommon malignant mesenchymal tumour deriving from soft tissues or visceral organs without any evidence of a primary bone osteosarcoma. Although ESOS has been mainly reported in the extremities, it can also occur in unusual locations such as the colorectal region. A 58-year-old man with a 3-month history of dyspepsia, constipation and soreness in the left upper abdominal quadrant was admitted to hospital. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a huge, irregular, mixed cystic and solid, partially calcified mass measuring 116mm×140mm×200mm. Because of the patient's obstructive symptoms, surgery was performed. A tumour involving the splenic flexure of the colon was excised in line with oncological principles by extended left hemicolectomy with end-to-side colo-colonic anastomosis. The specimen was interpreted as a primary osteosarcoma of the colon after immunohistochemical straining. Considering the limited data regarding ESOS arising in colon, we present the second case to date that involves the transverse colon, to further elucidate its clinical aspects, prognosis and treatment options.

ABSTRACT

Desmoid tumours are rare and locally invasive neoplasms that originate from the muscles and their aponeurosis. Incomplete excision causes recurrences; therefore, patients require aggressive resection that essentially entails tumour excision with a clear surgical margin. After radical resection, the resultant wide defect may lead to difficulty in closure of the anterior abdominal wall. Here, we report a case having surgery for large desmoid tumour of the anterior abdominal wall through an abdominoplasty incision followed by an abdominal wall reconstruction with a dual-sided composite mesh.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to neutralize acidic pH using an alkaline dialysate for continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in mice with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) and to investigate the change of the pH level in the acidic fluid along with its effects on liver oxidative stress, liver and kidney histopathology and the lifespan of the body. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 38 mice were randomly divided into 4 groups.PC development was inhibited by intraperitoneal injection of Ehrlich tumor cells in all mice in each group. RESULTS: In the group-1 receiving CAPD, the pH levels of acidic liquid were higher; and the levels of liver TBARS were lower with higher reduced glutathione levels. Histopathological damage in group-1 was less than in group-2. In Group 3 receiving CAPD, the average lifespan extended by 10.4%. The average lifespan extended by 26.1%. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that applying CAPD with alkaline dialysate in PC contributed to the neutralization of acidosis of the intraperitoneal acid structure;had favorable effects on oxidative stress markers in liver tissue; prevented histopathological injury in liver and kidney tissues, and extended the life span of the body in mice. As this is a simple, inexpensive, and easily available method, larger studies are warranted to evaluate its effects.
