ABSTRACT

We studied event-related potentials and the cognitive state for 2 years in 29 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Of those patients, 11 were at stage II and 18 were at stage III at initial assessment, as measured on the Hoehn and Yahr scale. The peak latency of P300 in patients at stage III was significantly prolonged, as compared with that in age-matched normal controls or PD patients at stage II. There was no significant change in P300 latency among patients whose motor ability remained unchanged at stage II or stage III during follow-up period. The mean P300 latency prolonged significantly in patients whose motor ability worsened from stage III to stage IV. The cognitive state in the patients with PD was characterized by impairment in the categories of orientation, recall and constructional ability. The degree of impairment of these items increased as the motor disability increased. These results suggest that cognitive dysfunctions and abnormality of P300 latency increased as the motor disabilities progressed.

ABSTRACT

Strain distribution due to cable laying and recovery is measured, using Brillouin optical fiber time domain analysis in a 3.7-km long submarine optical fiber cable. We believe this is the first time that the residual strain distribution in the recovered submarine cable has been measured. The residual strains measured in some cable sections due to the cable laying and recovery are found to be as small as 0.02 and 0.04%, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Temperature distribution in silica single-mode optical fibers, from -30 to +60 degrees C, is successfully measured by using Brillouin optical-fiber time-domain analysis. A temperature measurement accuracy of 3 degrees C with a spatial resolution of 100 m is attained over a fiber length of 1.2 km.

ABSTRACT

Brillouin frequency shift in two kinds of jacketed optical single-mode silica fiber, with an ultraviolet curable resin coat and a nylon coat, has been measured at temperatures ranging from -30 to +60 degrees C. It has been found that there are two reasons for the Brillouin frequency shift change in jacketed optical fibers against temperature change. One is the Brillouin frequency shift change for bare fibers. The other is the thermal stress due to the differences in thermal expansion coefficients in bare fiber and its coating material.

ABSTRACT

From 89 cases of invasive mole, collected by our department since 1948, 12 (13.5%) cases without preceding hydatidiform mole (group A) were taken out, and their clinical data and histological observations were studied in comparison with those preceded by hydatidiform mole (group B) in the remaining 77 (86.5%), with the following results: 1. Invasive mole in group A was preceded by artificial or spontaneous abortion, but not by premature or normal delivery. 2. All of the 12 cases developed the invasive mole within 6 months. 3. Relation between the size of the focus and the latency period was not observed in either of the two groups. 4. The incidence of preoperative metastasis was somewhat lower in group A, but no difference was visible between the two groups in prognostic result. 5. As for histological findings, edematization and vesiculation of stroma of villi were observed in all the cases of group A, though with difference in grade from case to case. These findings as well as proliferation and intervascular penetration of villous cells were similar to those of group B.
