ABSTRACT

The authors describe the case of a 35-year-old man with an injury to the left hip joint. When examined at the surgical ward, the patient complained of pain and restricted motion of the left hip. No traumatic changes in the left hip joint were revealed on X-ray and CT examination. When checked-up 13 days later, the patients still complained of persistent pain and restricted movement. Because of the discrepancy between the results of X-ray and clinical examinations, magnetic resonance imaging was recommended. This revealed an infraction of the roof of the acetabulum without trauma to the soft joint tissues and adjacent muscles. A retrospective analysis of the X-ray and CT examination data showed an infraction of the acetabular roof on CT scans. The authors emphasize the role of non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of occult fractures.

ABSTRACT

The activity of glutamate-oxalacetate and glutamate-pyruvate transaminases (GOT 2.6.1.1., GPT 2.6.1.2.) was determined in seedlings of normal and opaque-2 maize. The activity of these transaminases was determined in homozygotes +/+ and o2/o2, their F1 hybrid, in mixture of +/+ and +/o2 in S3F4 generation. The GOT and GPT activity in mutants opaque-2 was always higher than in normal plants. In generation S3F4 the higher activity of transaminases in opaque-2 plants was demonstrated without addition of the pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PRP) coenzyme (at GOT 1,36x, at GPT 2,00x) as well as at the optimum PRP concentration (at GOT 1,39x, at GPT 2, 48x). The difference in transaminase activity is therefore not due to changes in PRP biosynthesis. The determination of the GOT and GPT activity in seedlings might be used in breeding experiments as a screening method for selection of mutants.

ABSTRACT

Isatin, previously shown to promote growth in green and etiolated pea stems, is converted mainly to anthranilate in those tissues; small quantities of isatate are also formed. Fed anthranilate is converted mainly to its beta-d-glucoside; smaller amounts are metabolized to anthranilamide, tryptophan and kynurenine. These data provide some basis for understanding the growth promoting activity of isatin.
