ABSTRACT

UFT, antitumor agent containing uracil and futraful (FT-207), was given orally to 14 patients with recurrent or advanced carcinomas (6 gastric, 5 colorectal and 3 other carcinomas) and the clinical effects were evaluated. One PR (partial response) 1 NC (no change) and 9 PD(progressive disease) were obtained among 11 evaluable patients. Response rate was 9.1% (1/11), and overall response rate was 14.3% (2/14). According to Karnofsky's criteria, 2 responders (better than I-A) were obtained and response rate was 15.4% (2/13).

ABSTRACT

To determine whether the electric activities of the stomach and duodenum are related, the gastroduodenal junction area of the stomach of dogs was paced through implanted bipolar silver electrodes. It was found that the pacing rate of the basic electrical rhythm (BER) in the antrum of the stomach could be increased to a maximum of 8.9 cycles/min, without affecting the BER frequency in the duodenum. Conversely when the pacing rate of the BER in the duodenum was increased to a maximum of 24 cycles/min, the BER frequency in the antrum remained unaffected. These results show that the BER in the stomach and duodenum are independent, and imply that the BER cycles in the stomach and duodenum are due to the presence of two independent pace-maker areas.

ABSTRACT

Thirteen mongrel dogs equipped with four bipolar electrodes and three strain gauges on the anterior wall of the stomach underwent three types of vagotomy: truncal vagotomy (TV)-6 dogs; selective proximal vagotomy (SPV)-3 dogs; and antral vagotomy (AV)-4 dogs. Electrical and contractile activities of the stomach were examined before and after these vagotomies on both the fasting and postprandial states. TV caused an increased incidence of dysrhythmia and a 12 to 33% reduction of the propagation velocity of the basic electrical rhythm (BER). Following feeding, the characteristic waxing and waning pattern of normal gastric contraction was altered to a monotonic steady pattern, increasing overall contraction activity of the pyloric sphincter. These changes seem to be attributable to delayed gastric emptying following truncal vagotomy. SPV reduced the propagation velocity of the BER slightly (2.5-7.3%), preserving the inherent physiological contractile activity in the antrum and pyloric sphincter, and transforming the contractile activity in the corpus to a more monotonic pattern. AV effected a localized monotonic contractile activity in the antral region with no changes discernible in the body and pyloric sphincter. The propagation velocity was not changed significantly by antral vagotomy. The discharge interval of the BER was not altered significantly by these vagotomies.

ABSTRACT

Ten mongrel dogs equipped with four bipolar electrodes and three waterproof strain gauges were used for experiments. In fasting, mean discharge interval of BER of stomach ranged from 10.8 sec. to 13.7 sec.. Following feeding, discharge interval of BER showed a considerable prolongation ranging from 13% to 37% during the initial 60 minutes, and from 4.4% to 23% during the next 9 hour postprandial period. Propagation velocity of BER was almost constant in each animal, however the velocity showed a tendency to decrease slightly following feeding. The velocity in the corpus, antrum and prepyloric area was 0.4 cm/sec., 1.0 cm/sec. and 1.5 cm/sec., respectively. Irregegular electrical (dysrhythmias) were observed in the antrum most frequently, although their incidence was less than 2% in total duration during the entire observation period. In postprandial period, the contractile activities of the corpus showed a somewhat monotonic pattern with a steady amplitude. The contractile activities of the antrum and the pyloric sphincter showed a waxing and waning pattern with a varying amplitude. Characteristically, the pyloric sphincter showed an intermittent relaxing phase much more frequently as compared with the antrum.
