ABSTRACT

This case report describes a patient in her late 60s, previously diagnosed with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome who presented with difficulty walking. A year prior to her presentation she had a fall which made her notice a painless foot drop on the right. Her right leg was profoundly hypertrophied compared with the left, and a port-wine stain was present on the lateral side, extending from the hip to the mid-shin. The patient's differential diagnosis based on clinical examination and investigations is discussed leading to a final diagnosis of sciatic neuropathy secondary to an arteriovenous malformation due to Parkes Weber syndrome.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, huge amounts of antibiotics have been administered to farm animals, and as a result, residues of these antibiotics can accumulate in livestock products and, once consumed, may be transmitted to humans. Farm animals' antibiotic treatment may therefore present a risk for consumers health, especially for children and adolescents. In children, the immune system is not fully developed, and thus, they are more susceptible than adults to resistant bacteria. A dietary exposure assessment was conducted on veterinary antibiotics found in raw pork meat among children and adolescents in Cyprus, since pork is the most consumed red meat in Cypriot population. The study was based on the results of the occurrence of 45 residual antibiotics in raw pork meat samples in Cyprus between 2012 and 2017 in combination with data on the consumption of pork meat on children and adolescents taken from the latest demographic report in Cyprus. Estimated daily intake (EDI) values of veterinary antibiotics for children aged 6-9 years old, were higher compared to EDI values for adolescents aged 10-17 years old. The percentage ratio of the estimated daily intake to the acceptable daily intake for all the veterinary antibiotic residues was less than 5.6. The results indicate that antibiotic residues in pork meat of inland production are below the acceptable daily intake and are of low risk to human health related to the exposure of antibiotics. Nevertheless, continuous exposure to low levels of antibiotic residues in respect to age vulnerability should be of a great concern.

ABSTRACT

A stability indicating, reversed-phase ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed and validated for the determination of risedronate in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The determination was performed on a BDS C(18) analytical column (250 mm x 4.6 mm i.d., 5 microm particle size); the mobile phase consisted of 0.005 M tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and 0.005 M pyrophosphate sodium (pH 7.0) mixed with acetonitrile in a ratio (78:22, v/v) and pumped at a flow rate 1.00 mL min(-1). The ultraviolet (UV) detector was operated at 262 nm. The retention times of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, which was used as internal standard and risedronate were 4.94 and 5.95 min, respectively. The calibration graph was ranged from 2.50 to 20.00 microg mL(-1), while detection and quantitation limits were found to be 0.48 and 1.61 microg mL(-1), respectively. The intra- and inter-day percentage relative standard deviations, %R.S.D., were less than 5.9%, while the relative percentage error, %E(r), was less than 0.4%. The method was applied to the quality control of commercial tablets and content uniformity test and proved to be suitable for rapid and reliable quality control.
