ABSTRACT

The neuropeptide kisspeptin (Kiss) is crucial in regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. It is produced by two main groups of neurons in the hypothalamus: the rostral periventricular region around the third ventricle and the arcuate nucleus. Kiss is the peptide product of the KiSS-1 gene and serves as the endogenous agonist for the GPR54 receptor. The Kiss/GPR54 system functions as a critical regulator of the reproductive system. Thus, we examined the effect of intracerebroventricular administration of 3 µg of Kiss to the right lateral ventricle of ovariectomized rats primed with a dose of 5 µg subcutaneous (sc) of estradiol benzoate (EB). Kiss treatment increased the lordosis quotient at all times tested. However, the lordosis reflex score was comparatively lower yet still significant compared to the control group. To investigate receptor specificity and downstream mechanisms on lordosis, we infused 10 µg of GPR54 receptor antagonist, Kiss-234, 5 µg of the progestin receptor antagonist, RU486, or 3 µg of antide, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) receptor antagonist, to the right lateral ventricle 30 min before an infusion of 3 µg of Kiss. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in the facilitation of lordosis behavior by Kiss at 60 and 120 min when Kiss-234, RU486, or antide were administered. These findings suggest that Kiss stimulates lordosis expression by activating GPR54 receptors on GnRH neurons and that Kiss/GPR54 system is an essential intermediary by which progesterone activates GnRH.

ABSTRACT

The inflorescences of the Mexican gordolobo are used as a folk medicine to treat various respiratory diseases. Currently, the botanical species that bear the name Mexican gordolobo belong to the genera Gnaphalium and Pseudognaphalium. Despite a long history of traditional use, most Mexican gordolobo species have never been fully chemically characterized, and the range of constituents in the species has not been comprehensively reported. To establish a quality control and chemical characterization method, a total of 49 samples belonging to 18 species of Pseudognaphalium and four species of Gnaphalium were studied. Nine flavones were quantified using a UPLC-PDA method. The method was validated in terms of linearity (R2 > 0.99), precision (intra- and inter-day: 0.1-3.9%), accuracy (96-103%), detection limit (10 ng/mL), limit of quantification (25 ng/mL) and robustness. 3-Methylquercetin, luteolin, quercetin, 3,5-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone, apigenin and gnaphaliin A were present at relatively high levels in most of the samples analyzed. The samples of P. oxyphyllum and P. liebmannii showed the highest content of the 9 compounds analyzed. Whereas the samples of the 5 species of Gnaphalium showed the lowest levels, including non-detectable, of the 9 compounds quantified. This marks an important difference with Pseudognaphalium species. Furthermore, using UHPLC-ESI-QToF data with targeted and non-targeted approaches, 57 compounds, were identified in Mexican gordolobo samples. Flavonoids were the main group of compounds found in Mexican gordolobo.

ABSTRACT

Given the binary nature of nanoalloy systems, their properties are dependent on their size, shape, structure, composition, and chemical ordering. When energy and entropic factors for shapes and structure variations are considered in nanoparticle growth, the spectra of shapes become so vast that even metastable arrangements have been reported under ambient conditions. Experimental and theoretical variations of multiply twinned particles have been observed, from the Ino and Marks decahedra to polyicosahedra and polydecahedra with comparable energetic stability among them. Herein, we report the experimental production of a stable doubly truncated double-icosahedron structure (TdIh) in Au-Ag nanoparticles, in which a twinned Ag-rich alloyed shell is reconstructed on a Au-Ag alloyed Ino-decahedral core. The structure, chemical composition, and growth pathway are proposed on the basis of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis and excess energy calculations, while its structural stability is estimated by large-scale atomic molecular dynamics simulations. This novel nanostructure differs from other structures previously reported.

ABSTRACT

T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma is an uncommon lymphoid neoplasm in adults, although more frequent in children and teenagers, that often affects the mediastinum and bone marrow, requiring intensive chemotherapy protocols. Its prognosis is poor if a cure is not achieved with first-line treatments. We present a case report of a 19-year-old man diagnosed with this type of lymphoma due to significant respiratory distress and a mediastinal mass. He received treatment according to the hyper-CVAD regimen, with a complete metabolic response. However, seven months later a new mediastinal growth was observed, leading to salvage treatment with a combination of nelarabine and daratumumab. We observed not only refractoriness, but also leukemization, which prompted consideration of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Based on this case, we conducted a review of pharmacological treatment options for refractory or relapsed lymphoblastic lymphoma, as well as the role of radiotherapy in managing mediastinal disease. This case report highlights the limited evidence available regarding later-line treatments, with unusual reports regarding employing our combination of daratumumab and nelarabine, and emphasizes the importance of achieving cures in the first line of treatment.

For the first time, the sequential combination of UVC-LED (276 nm) and photo-Fenton/UVA-LED (376 nm) process has been assessed in continuous flow mode for wastewater reclamation according to the new European Regulation for reuse in agricultural irrigation (EU 2020/741). The results show that it is possible to obtain water quality class B (Escherichia coli ≤ 100 CFU/100 mL) by UVC-LED irradiation alone, operating the system with a hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 6.5 min and liquid depth of 5 cm in the case of secondary effluents with low Escherichia coli load (8.102-3.1.103 CFU/100 mL). As for high bacteria concentrations (1.2-4.2.104 CFU/100 mL), HRTs longer than 30 min are required. The bacterial load has not influenced decontamination, removing 18 ± 4 % of microcontaminants. Coupling the UVC (30-min HRT and 5.0 cm liquid depth) and the UVA/photo-Fenton (60-min and 15-cm liquid depth) systems allows 58 ± 4 % of real organic microcontaminants to be removed, in addition to achieving water quality class B.

ABSTRACT

The inflorescences of Pseudognaphalium liebmannii are used as folk medicine to treat various respiratory diseases. In this work, we report the isolation of seven known flavones: 5-hydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyflavone 1, 5,8-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyflavone 2, 5,7-dihydroxy-3,8-dimethoxyflavone 3 (gnaphaliin A), 3,5-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone 4 (gnaphaliin B), 3,5-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone 5, 3,5,7-trimethoxyflavone 6 and 3-O-methylquercetin 7. All these flavones except 1 and 6 showed a relaxant effect on guinea pig tracheal preparation with EC50 between 69.91 ± 15.32 and 118.72 ± 7.06 µM. Aminophylline (EC50 = 122.03 ± 7.05 µM) was used as a relaxant reference drug. The active flavones shifted the concentration-response curves of forskolin and nitroprusside leftward, and significantly reduced the EC50 values of these drugs. Furthermore, these flavones dose-dependently inhibited phosphodiesterase (PDE) in an in vitro assay. This reveals that the inflorescences of P. liebmannii contain several flavones with relaxant effect on airway smooth muscle and with PDEs inhibition that contribute to supporting the anti-asthmatic traditional use.

Agricultural residues adequate managing contributes to reduce CO2 emissions and easy the circular economy. In this paper, cucumber, tomato and pepper greenhouse crop residues were characterized both chemically and energetically to potential of waste as a biofuel. When compared to other herbaceous and woody biomass, the data show higher moisture, ash and chlorine contents. The gross calorific values of these residues are in the same range as the herbaceous biomass (14.92 MJ/kg), with net values of 13.71, 14.58 and 15.73 MJ/kg for cucumber, tomato and pepper, respectively. The study also included other not common elements, finding the highest values for calcium (13-25 mg/kg) and potassium (23-30 mg/kg). To date, empirical correlations have been defined to predict the CV as a function of total C content (expressed as % in dry weight) for these residues individually. The empirical correlations obtained had maximum absolute errors (MAE) of 0.11, 0.32 and 0.58 % for cucumber, tomato and pepper whereas the marginal mean bias errors (MBE) were 0.016, 0.002 and 0.004 %, respectively, which confirms the value of using this method to determinate the gross calorific value of these residues. The correlations shown provide a useful tool for developing energy production processes based on crop residues, that would appear to be an interesting source of renewable energy to produce heat.

Besides direct mortality, wind farms also affect aerial fauna by modifying their communities, reducing species diversity and richness through disturbance. During three consecutive years, we used mist nets and acoustic recorders, and conducted carcass searches, to characterize the assemblage of bat species and to estimate bat mortality at two nearby wind farms sited <5 km apart in a highly biodiverse region. We asked whether the diversity, richness and evenness of the assemblages varied yearly, predicting it would decrease through time. Richness and evenness did not change, but the diversity of species recorded acoustically, 96% being aerial insectivores, was significantly lower the third year. We estimate 4 - 15.7 fatalities/MW/year by wind farm, with 63% of species found as carcasses being aerial insectivores. We found >40% of dissimilarity in the species composition of bat assemblages between wind farms despite the short distance between them, with species turnover accounting for more than half of the dissimilarity every year. Similarly, species turnover accounted for >15% of the dissimilarity in the composition of the assemblage of live bats (captured and recorded acoustically) and the assemblage obtained through carcass searches. Our findings suggest that nearby wind farms impact bat communities differentially and aerial insectivores disproportionally. Long term, multi-method surveys are needed to characterize bat communities in highly diverse regions and to evaluate the post-construction effects that wind farms have on them.

Urea is the nitrogen-containing fertilizer most used in agricultural fields; however, the nutrient given by the urea is lost into the environment. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of two soil textures by applying a prolonged-release system of urea (PRSU) on the N losses. This research shows an important decrease of the nitrate and ammonium losses from 24.91 to 87.94%. Also, the microbiological population increases after the application of the PRSU. It was concluded that both soil textures presented the same loss-reduction pattern, where the N from the nitrates and ammonium was reduced in the leachates, increasing the quality of the soil and the microbial population in both soil textures after the PRSU application.

ABSTRACT

Gender dysphoria is the diagnosis included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association, which refers to the marked incongruence that exists between the gender that is felt or expressed and the one assigned at birth. The discomfort generated by the incongruity can cause gender affirmation to be requested through hormonal treatment or surgical sex reassignment, which is expected to disappear such discomfort. However, not all people with gender incongruence manifest discomfort and when the discomfort exists it is not always of psychopathological characteristics (dysphoria), which for some authors represents gender affirmation for aesthetic purposes (correct the incongruity). There are reports of increased medical care for transgender people who request somatic transition, but in Mexico there are no standardized protocols for their care; it is only recommended to promote access to hormonal treatment and mental health services to transgender people who request it. The eventual inclusion of surgical management in the Mexican guidelines will require clarity of concepts and unification of criteria to select the cases that should enter the health system for treatment, which is why health personnel must be prepared to identify those who can benefit from the somatic transition. The presence of dysphoria and psychiatric comorbidity may be key elements when the evaluation is carried out.


Disforia de género es el diagnóstico incluido en el Manual diagnóstico y estadístico de los trastornos mentales, editado por la Asociación Americana de Psiquiatría, que se refiere a la marcada incongruencia que existe entre el género que se siente o se expresa y el que fue asignado al nacer. El malestar generado por la incongruencia puede ocasionar que se solicite afirmación de género mediante tratamiento hormonal o reasignación quirúrgica de sexo, con lo que se espera que desaparezca tal malestar. Sin embargo, no todas las personas con incongruencia de género manifiestan malestar y cuando el malestar existe no siempre es de características psicopatológicas (disforia), lo que para algunos autores representa afirmación de género con fines estéticos (corregir la incongruencia). Existen reportes del incremento de atención médica de personas transgénero que solicitan transición somática, pero en México no existen protocolos estandarizados para su atención; solo se recomienda promover el acceso a tratamiento hormonal y servicios de salud mental a las personas transgénero que así lo soliciten. La eventual inclusión de manejo quirúrgico en las guías mexicanas requerirá claridad de conceptos y unificación de criterios para seleccionar los casos que deban ingresar al sistema de salud para tratamiento, por lo que el personal sanitario deberá estar preparado para poder identificar a quienes puedan beneficiarse con la transición somática. La presencia de disforia y comorbilidad psiquiátrica pueden ser elementos claves cuando se lleve a cabo la evaluación.

ABSTRACT

The role of microalgae in the production of bioproducts and biofuels, along with their ability to provide a sustainable pathway for wastewater treatment, makes them promising alternatives to conventional processes. Nevertheless, large-scale downstream processing requires an understanding of biomass rheology that needs to be addressed further. This study aimed to characterize microalgal concentrates rheologically in different culture media. The presence of bacteria was quantified by photorespirometry and plate counting techniques. The culture medium was found to significantly influence viscosity, with primary wastewater exhibiting the highest viscosity and seawater plus pig slurry the lowest. The concentration of heterotrophic bacteria was directly related to the viscosity. Extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) in supernatant exhibited an inverse viscosity trend compared to biomass concentrates, with pig slurry cultures having higher concentrations. These findings emphasize the profound influence of culture medium and EPS on the rheology of microalgal biomass, underscoring the need for continued research aimed at facilitating and optimizing large-scale downstream processes within the framework of a circular economy and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (6,8, and 12).

ABSTRACT

The capability of a mobile robot to efficiently and safely perform complex missions is limited by its knowledge of the environment, namely the situation. Advanced reasoning, decision-making, and execution skills enable an intelligent agent to act autonomously in unknown environments. Situational Awareness (SA) is a fundamental capability of humans that has been deeply studied in various fields, such as psychology, military, aerospace, and education. Nevertheless, it has yet to be considered in robotics, which has focused on single compartmentalized concepts such as sensing, spatial perception, sensor fusion, state estimation, and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Hence, the present research aims to connect the broad multidisciplinary existing knowledge to pave the way for a complete SA system for mobile robotics that we deem paramount for autonomy. To this aim, we define the principal components to structure a robotic SA and their area of competence. Accordingly, this paper investigates each aspect of SA, surveying the state-of-the-art robotics algorithms that cover them, and discusses their current limitations. Remarkably, essential aspects of SA are still immature since the current algorithmic development restricts their performance to only specific environments. Nevertheless, Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Deep Learning (DL), has brought new methods to bridge the gap that maintains these fields apart from the deployment to real-world scenarios. Furthermore, an opportunity has been discovered to interconnect the vastly fragmented space of robotic comprehension algorithms through the mechanism of Situational Graph (S-Graph), a generalization of the well-known scene graph. Therefore, we finally shape our vision for the future of robotic situational awareness by discussing interesting recent research directions.

ABSTRACT

Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of aggressive lymphoma. Approximately 60% of fit patients achieve curation with immunochemotherapy, but the remaining patients relapse or have refractory disease, which predicts a short survival. Traditionally, risk stratification in DLBCL has been based on scores that combine clinical variables. Other methodologies have been developed based on the identification of novel molecular features, such as mutational profiles and gene expression signatures. Recently, we developed the LymForest-25 profile, which provides a personalized survival risk prediction based on the integration of transcriptomic and clinical features using an artificial intelligence system. In the present report, we studied the relationship between the molecular variables included in LymForest-25 in the context of the data released by the REMoDL-B trial, which evaluated the addition of bortezomib to the standard treatment (R-CHOP) in the upfront setting of DLBCL. For this, we retrained the machine learning model of survival on the group of patients treated with R-CHOP (N=469) and then made survival predictions for those patients treated with bortezomib plus R-CHOP (N=459). According to these results, the RB-CHOP scheme achieved a 30% reduction in the risk of progression or death for the 50% of DLBCL patients at higher molecular risk (p-value 0.03), potentially expanding the effectiveness of this treatment to a wider patient population as compared with other previously defined risk groups.

BACKGROUND: The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is one of the regions that is most vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change, yet the potential public health impacts have been underexplored compared to other regions. We aimed to examine one aspect of these impacts, heat-related mortality, by quantifying the current and future burden in the MENA region and identifying the most vulnerable countries. METHODS: We did a health impact assessment using an ensemble of bias-adjusted statistically downscaled Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) data based on four Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios (SSP1-2·6 [consistent with a 2°C global warming scenario], SSP2-4·5 [medium pathway scenario], SSP3-7·0 [pessimistic scenario], and SSP5-8·5 [high emissions scenario]) and Bayesian inference methods. Assessments were based on apparent temperature-mortality relationships specific to each climate subregion of MENA based on Koppen-Geiger climate type classification, and unique thresholds were characterised for each 50 km grid cell in the region. Future annual heat-related mortality was estimated for the period 2021-2100. Estimates were also presented with population held constant to quantify the contribution of projected demographic changes to the future heat-mortality burden. FINDINGS: The average annual heat-related death rate across all MENA countries is currently 2·1 per 100 000 people. Under the two high emissions scenarios (SSP3-7·0 and SSP5-8·5), most of the MENA region will have experienced substantial warming by the 2060s. Annual heat-related deaths of 123·4 per 100 000 people are projected for MENA by 2100 under a high emissions scenario (SSP5-8·5), although this rate would be reduced by more than 80% (to 20·3 heat-related deaths per 100 000 people per year) if global warming could be limited to 2°C (ie, under the SSP1-2·6 scenario). Large increases are also expected by 2100 under the SSP3-7·0 scenario (89·8 heat-related deaths per 100 000 people per year) due to the high population growth projected under this pathway. Projections in MENA are far higher than previously observed in other regions, with Iran expected to be the most vulnerable country. INTERPRETATION: Stronger climate change mitigation and adaptation policies are needed to avoid these heat-related mortality impacts. Since much of this increase will be driven by population changes, demographic policies and healthy ageing will also be key to successful adaptation. In many small communities in the Mediterranean area, groundwater is usually the only water body available. Depending mainly on the surrounding geology, their concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides may pose a radiological hazard. Removal of uranium and radium from drinking water is the best way to avoid it, i.e., reverse osmosis (RO), but consuming a lot of energy. Thus, two modified drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) using zeolites coated with manganese dioxide as adsorbent material were analyzed as an alternative to RO. Groundwater salinity can negatively affect this process. Radium removal decreased as water salinity increased; but it had a major impact on uranium, rendering the adsorption effectless in one DWTP. Waste management and how to avoid it from becoming radioactive are of major concern. Radium and uranium were associated to the reducible fraction in the filter material and also to the carbonate fraction in the case of uranium. Regeneration of the filter material using KCl solutions was able to remove 81% and 63% of uranium and radium, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Alterations in resting metabolic rate (RMR), the largest component of daily total energy expenditure, with aging have been shown in various studies. However, little is known about the associations between RMR and health outcomes in later life. AIMS: To analyze whether RMR is associated with incident disability and mobility decline in a 10-year longitudinal study, as well as the moderating role of frailty in these associations. METHODS: Data from 298 older adults aged 70 and over from the Frailty and Dependence in Albacete (FRADEA) study in Spain were used, including a baseline measurement in 2007-2009 and a follow-up measurement 10 years later. RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry. Outcomes were incident disability in basic activities of daily living (BADL, Barthel Index), incident disability in instrumental ADL (IADL, Lawton index), and mobility decline (Functional Ambulation Categories scores). Fried's frailty phenotype was used as an indicator of frailty. Logistic regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Fully adjusted and stratified analyses revealed that only in the pre-frail/frail group, a higher RMR was associated with a lower risk of incident BADL disability (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.23-0.96, p = 0.037), incident IADL disability (OR = 0.39, 95% CI = 0.18-0.84, p = 0.017), and mobility decline (OR = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.14-0.64, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first study looking at the associations between RMR and functional health using a longitudinal research design. The results suggest that RMR could be used as an early identifier of a specific resilient group within the pre-frail and frail older population, with a lower risk of further health decline.

In recent years, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems have shown significant performance, accuracy, and efficiency gain. In this regard, Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) methods refer to the SLAM approaches that employ cameras for pose estimation and map reconstruction and are preferred over Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR)-based methods due to their lighter weight, lower acquisition costs, and richer environment representation. Hence, several VSLAM approaches have evolved using different camera types (e.g., monocular or stereo), and have been tested on various datasets (e.g., Technische Universität München (TUM) RGB-D or European Robotics Challenge (EuRoC)) and in different conditions (i.e., indoors and outdoors), and employ multiple methodologies to have a better understanding of their surroundings. The mentioned variations have made this topic popular for researchers and have resulted in various methods. In this regard, the primary intent of this paper is to assimilate the wide range of works in VSLAM and present their recent advances, along with discussing the existing challenges and trends. This survey is worthwhile to give a big picture of the current focuses in robotics and VSLAM fields based on the concentrated resolutions and objectives of the state-of-the-art. This paper provides an in-depth literature survey of fifty impactful articles published in the VSLAMs domain. The mentioned manuscripts have been classified by different characteristics, including the novelty domain, objectives, employed algorithms, and semantic level. The paper also discusses the current trends and contemporary directions of VSLAM techniques that may help researchers investigate them.

ABSTRACT

The seemingly simple step of molding a cholesteric liquid crystal into spherical shape, yielding a Cholesteric Spherical Reflector (CSR), has profound optical consequences that open a range of opportunities for potentially transformative technologies. The chiral Bragg diffraction resulting from the helical self-assembly of cholesterics becomes omnidirectional in CSRs. This turns them into selective retroreflectors that are exceptionally easy to distinguish-regardless of background-by simple and low-cost machine vision, while at the same time they can be made largely imperceptible to human vision. This allows them to be distributed in human-populated environments, laid out in the form of QR-code-like markers that help robots and Augmented Reality (AR) devices to operate reliably, and to identify items in their surroundings. At the scale of individual CSRs, unpredictable features within each marker turn them into Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs), of great value for secure authentication. Via the machines reading them, CSR markers can thus act as trustworthy yet unobtrusive links between the physical world (buildings, vehicles, packaging,…) and its digital twin computer representation. This opens opportunities to address pressing challenges in logistics and supply chain management, recycling and the circular economy, sustainable construction of the built environment, and many other fields of individual, societal and commercial importance.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to analyse the impact of COVID-19 during 2020 and 2021 on the prescription of enteral nutritional support and its expenditure in the Community of Madrid, Spain, compared to pre-pandemic data from 2016 in the general population vs. elderly. We analysed official electronic prescriptions of all public hospitals of the Community of Madrid. The population over 75 years of age have the higher prescription of nutritional supplements (p < 0.001 vs. other age groups), with no differences between the 45−64 age group compared to the 65−74 age group (χ2 = 3.259, p = 0.196). The first wave of COVID-19 or the first time there was a real awareness of the virus in Spain is similar in a way to the first peak of prescription of enteral nutrition in March 2020. The second peak of prescription was observed in the over 75 age group in July 2020, being more pronounced in December 2020 and March−April of the following year (F = 7.863, p = 0.041). The last peaks correspond to summer 2021 and autumn of the same year (p = 0.031­year 2021 vs. 2020, p = 0.011­year 2021 vs. 2019), where a relationship between increased prescription of enteral nutrition and COVID-19 cases is observed. High-protein and high-calorie dietary therapies were the most prescribed in patients with or without diabetes. All of this entailed higher cost for the Community of Madrid. In conclusion, COVID-19 significantly affected the prescription of nutritional support, especially in the population over 75 years of age.

ABSTRACT

The optimization of downstream processing is a critical step in any microalgae-related process. The microalgal biomass is separated from the initial diluted cultures to form a concentrated slurry, the properties of which greatly influence the design and performance of further processing steps, such as enzymatic hydrolysis. In this work, the rheological behaviour of two microalgal concentrates produced both in freshwater (Scenedesmus almeriensis) and seawater (Nannochloropsis gaditana) were studied. Measurements were performed on the entire range of biomass concentrations, from 0.5 g/L to 264 g/L. Non-Newtonian behaviour was observed whatever the water type and biomass concentration used, especially at high biomass concentrations above 10 g/L. The rheological data were adjusted to the Power Law model, and the consistency and flow behaviour indexes were correlated with the biomass concentration. The results show that the freshwater and seawater biomasses exhibited different behaviours, with freshwater slurries being more viscous than seawater ones. The high viscosity of freshwater slurries requires increased energy consumption for mixing, with an estimated cost increase of 60% when using them under the non-Newtonian conditions considered. These findings highlight the considerable effect of algal biomass rheology on the mixing power required during microalgal biomass processing.
