ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Distress tolerance (DT)-willingness to face internal discomforts-has a fuzzy boundary with neuroticism (low emotional stability), raising questions about its independent role in models of personality and mental health. METHOD: We investigated DT's overlap with neuroticism and other Big Five factors in a structural model of personality and personality disorder features in samples of university students (N = 1025), emotional disorder patients (N = 225), and substance-use patients (N = 210). RESULTS: In exploratory factor analyses, we found that DT indicators clustered with neuroticism and were essentially unrelated to other Big Five domains. Big Five personality dimensions collectively explained approximately 40%-70% of variation in DT, across different samples and methods of quantifying shared variance. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that DT and neuroticism are near neighbors in empirical space and speculate that much of the observed correlation between DT and mental health outcomes in the literature may be carried by shared neuroticism variance. We suggest that clearer distinctions between the two constructs in empirical research could improve our understanding of DT's unique role in the development and treatment of psychopathology.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: To decrease psychological risk for content moderators, the study initiated the first steps of developing a robust employment screening tool, namely, the Cognitive Adaptability and Resiliency Employment Screener. Method: The study consisted of three phases with 4,839 total participants. Results: In Phase 1, a set of 76 items were developed and tested via exploratory factor analysis, yielding three factors (i.e., Psychological Perseverance & Agility, Rumination & Emotional Lingering, and Expressiveness & Sociability) and also reducing the scale to 68 items. In Phase 2 through confirmatory factor analysis, the three-factor structure showed good fit (CFI = 0.92, RMSEA = 0.05) and demonstrated sufficient overall reliability. In Phase 3, the convergent validity and divergent validity of the tool were established relative to constructs such as resilience, cognitive control and flexibility, emotion regulation, and optimism. Discussion: Altogether, the findings revealed that the scale demonstrated good psychometric properties that, pending future studies, may serve as a promising employment screener for content moderators.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Human platelet lysate (HPL) has been proposed as a safe and efficient xeno-free alternative to fetal bovine serum (FBS) for large-scale culturing of cell-based medicinal products. However, the use of blood derivatives poses a potential risk of pathogen transmission. To mitigate this risk, different pathogen reduction treatment (PRT) practices can be applied on starting materials or on final products, but these methods might modify the final composition and the quality of the products. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We evaluated the impact of applying a PRT based on riboflavin and ultraviolet irradiation on the raw materials used to manufacture an improved Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)-grade HPL product in a public blood center. Growth promotion and the levels of growth factors and proteins were compared between an inactivated product (HPL4-i) and a non-inactivated product (HPL4). Stability studies were performed at 4°C, -20°C, and -80°C. RESULTS: The application of a PRT on the starting materials significantly altered the protein composition of HPL4-i as compared with HPL4. Despite this, the growth promoting rates were unaffected when compared with FBS used as a control. While all products were stable at -20°C and -80°C for 24 months, a significant decrease in the activity of HPL4-i was observed when stored at 4°C. CONCLUSION: Our results show that the application of a PRT based on riboflavin and ultraviolet light on starting materials used in the manufacture of HPL modifies the final composition of the product, yet its cell growth promoting activity is maintained at levels similar to those of non-inactivated products.

ABSTRACT

Cyclobutanols undergo an oxidative ring expansion with Co(acac)2 and triplet oxygen to give 1,2-dioxanols. The formation of an alkoxy radical drives the regioselective cleavage of the ring on the more substituted side before insertion of molecular oxygen. The reaction is particularly effective on secondary cyclobutanols but works also on certain tertiary alcohols. Further substitution with neutral nucleophiles under catalytic Lewis acid conditions led to original 1,2-dioxanes with a preferred 3,6-cis-configuration.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The difficulty in diagnosis and the spectrum of clinical manifestations that can determine the choice of treatment for antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) has fostered the development of recommendations by the Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SER), based on the best possible evidence. These recommendations can serve as a reference for rheumatologists and other specialists involved in the management of APS. METHODS: A panel of 4rheumatologists, a gynaecologist and a haematologist with expertise in APS was created, previously selected by the SER through an open call or based on professional merits. The stages of the work were: identification of the key areas for the document elaboration, analysis and synthesis of the scientific evidence (using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, SIGN levels of evidence) and formulation of recommendations based on this evidence and formal assessment or reasoned judgement techniques (consensus techniques). RESULTS: Forty-six recommendations were drawn up, addressing 5main areas: diagnosis and evaluation, measurement of primary thromboprophylaxis, treatment for APS or secondary thromboprophylaxis, treatment for obstetric APS and special situations. These recommendations also include the role of novel oral anticoagulants, the problem of recurrences or the key risk factors identified in these subjects. This document reflects the last 25, referring to the areas of: obstetric APS and special situations. The document provides a table of recommendations and treatment algorithms. CONCLUSIONS: Update of SER recommendations on APS is presented. This document corresponds to part II, related to obstetric SAF and special situations. These recommendations are considered tools for decision-making for clinicians, taking into consideration both the decision of the physician experienced in APS and the patient. A part I has also been prepared, which addresses aspects related to diagnosis, evaluation and treatment.
