ABSTRACT

The massive data transfer rates of nowadays mobile communication technologies demand devices not only with outstanding electric performances but with example stability in a wide range of conditions. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices provide a high Q-factor and properties inherent to the employed materials: thermal and chemical stability or low propagation losses. SAW resonators and filters based on Sc0.43Al0.57N synthetized by reactive magnetron sputtering on single crystal and polycrystalline diamond substrates were fabricated and evaluated. Our SAW resonators showed high electromechanical coupling coefficients for Rayleigh and Sezawa modes, propagating at 1.2 GHz and 2.3 GHz, respectively. Finally, SAW filters were fabricated on Sc0.43Al0.57N/diamond heterostructures, with working frequencies above 4.7 GHz and ~200 MHz bandwidths, confirming that these devices are promising candidates in developing 5G technology.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Older adults constitute the most vulnerable population group to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Mexico, their biopsychosocial conditions might intensify their vulnerability. METHOD: Affiliation to health systems, health conditions and gerontological evaluation of 3,218 older adults were analyzed following the methodology of the PAHO-Mexico Health, Well-being and Aging Survey. RESULTS: 88.6 % of older adults referred being affiliated to health systems; 30.2 %, 52.4 %, 10.3 %, 4.1 % and 5.6 % referred suffering from diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease and cerebrovascular disease, respectively; 15.6 % reported urinary incontinence, and 11.3%, fecal incontinence; 12.1 % of the women referred having suffered from breast cancer at some point, and 6.3 %, cervical cancer. The habit of smoking tobacco was observed in 11.1 %, risk of malnutrition in 32.8 %, established malnutrition in 4.1 %, functional dependence for basic and instrumental activities of daily life in 16.3 % and 17.6 %, respectively. CONCLUSION: Comprehensive gerontological evaluation is essential for efficient care of older adults who suffer from COVID-19, and for adequate care of the effects or health conditions at the conclusion of the confinement imposed by the pandemic.

CONCLUSIÓN: La evaluación gerontológica integral es fundamental para la atención eficiente de los adultos mayores que padecen COVID-19 y para la adecuada atención por los efectos o condiciones de salud al terminar el confinamiento por la pandemia.

ABSTRACT

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The agents capable of causing damage to genetic material are known as genotoxins and, according to their mode of action, are classified into mutagens, carcinogens, or teratogens. Genotoxins are also involved in the pathogenesis of several chronic degenerative diseases, including hepatic, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular disorders; diabetes; arthritis; cancer; chronic inflammation; and ageing. In recent decades, researchers have found novel bioactive phytocompounds able to counteract the effects of physical and chemical mutagens. Several studies have shown the antigenotoxic potential of different fruits and plants (Part 1). In this review (Part 2), we present a research overview conducted on some plants and vegetables (spirulina, broccoli, chamomile, cocoa, ginger, laurel, marigold, roselle, and rosemary), which are frequently consumed by humans. In addition, an analysis of some phytochemicals extracted from those vegetables and the analysis of a resin (propolis),whose antigenotoxic power has been demonstrated in various tests, including the Ames assay, sister chromatid exchange, chromosomal aberrations, micronucleus, and comet assay, was also performed.

ABSTRACT

A novel compact optical biochip based on a thin layer-sensing surface of nitrocellulose is used for in-situ label-free detection of metalloproteinase (MMP9) related to dry eye disease. In this article, a new integrated chip with different interferometric transducers layout with an optimal sensing surface is reported for the first time. We demonstrate that specific antibodies can be immobilized onto these transducers with a very low volume of sample and with good orientation. Many sensing transducers constitute the presented biochip in order to yield statistical data and stability in the acquired measurements. As a result, we report the recognition curve for pure recombinant MMP9, tests of model tears with MMP9, and real tear performance from patients, with a promising limit of detection.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health problem, which significantly affects older adults. . The prevalence and biopsychosocial conditions of DM in older adults in the State of Hidalgo, Mexico, are analyzed using the Health and Aging Survey 2014 (SABE-Hidalgo, Mexico). RESULTS: DM in older adults presents a prevalence of 28.22% in the State, predominating in women and becoming more common with increasing age. The highest frequency occurs in residents of urban areas (57.2%), those with less schooling (79.6%), and those who live with relatives (77%). In addition, 54.7% of older adults with DM had cognitive impairment, 67.9% had arterial hypertension and 45.28% presented joint disease. 41.2% suffered falls, 68.52% visual problems and 87.3% tooth loss. Finally, 85.8% receive care but only 29.2% perceive improvement in their health. CONCLUSIONS: It is fundamental to develop integral programs and policies to care for older adults with DM.

ABSTRACT

The negative epoxy-based SU-8 photoresist has a wide variety of applications within the semiconductor industry, photonics and lab-on-a-chip devices, and it is emerging as an alternative to silicon-based devices for sensing purposes. In the present work, biotinylation of the SU-8 polymer surface promoted by light is reported. As a result, a novel, effective, and low-cost material, focusing on the immobilization of bioreceptors and consequent biosensing, is developed. This material allows the spatial discrimination depending on the irradiation of desired areas. The most salient feature is that the photobiotin may be directly incorporated into the SU-8 curing process, consequently reducing time and cost. The potential use of this substrate is demonstrated by the immunoanalytical detection of the synthetic steroid gestrinone, showing excellent performances. Moreover, the naked eye biodetection due to the transparent SU-8 substrate, and simple instrumental quantification are additional advantages.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we show the electronic transport and the quantum phase transitions that characterize the quantum Hall regime in graphene placed on SiO(2) substrates at magnetic fields up to 28 T and temperatures down to 4 K. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the Hall and longitudinal resistivity reveals intriguing non-universalities of the critical exponents of the plateau-insulator transition. These exponents depend on the type of disorder that governs the electrical transport and its characterization is important for the design and fabrication of novel graphene nano-devices.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, label-free biosensing for antibody screening by periodic lattices of high-aspect ratio SU-8 nano-pillars (BICELLs) is presented. As a demonstration, the determination of anti-gestrinone antibodies from whole rabbit serum is carried out, and for the first time, the dissociation constant (KD = 6 nM) of antigen-antibody recognition process is calculated using this sensing system. After gestrinone antigen immobilization on the BICELLs, the immunorecognition was performed. The cells were interrogated vertically by using micron spot size Fourier transform visible and IR spectrometry (FT-VIS-IR), and the dip wavenumber shift was monitored. The biosensing assay exhibited good reproducibility and sensitivity (LOD = 0.75 ng/mL).
