ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In Northeast Brazil, the use of melon cactus (Melocactus spp.) is quite common and varied. Thus, the present study aimed to perform various analyzes in cladodes of melon cactus [Melocactus zehntneri (Britton & Rose) Luetzelburg], to understand the reasons for the use of this species. The cladodes were collected in the city of Campina Grande and taken to the Food Engineering Laboratory of the Federal University of Campina Grande, where we performed the following analyses: mass, height, diameter, color, moisture, acidity, pH, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds, both in the epidermis and in the aquifer parenchyma. The results showed that the epidermis has a higher acidity, ascorbic acid content and lower pH compared to the aquifer parenchyma. The contents of carotenoids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds, were different from the both parts analyzed. The epidermis always had greater quantities of carotenoids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds than the aquifer parenchyma for the three plants, showing that most of the plant defense takes place in this tissue. Further studies, with more accurate techniques, are needed to identify the bioactive components of this species.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability of the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) applied by final level undergraduate physiotherapy students. Materials and methods An assessment of evaluation of diagnostic tests was done in 21 clinically healthy infants of both genders, aged 0 to 18 months, residents at Bucaramanga, Colombia. The evaluation was conducted by 12 raters, 11 physiotherapy students in final level and a physiotherapist with experience in pediatrics. The assessments were performed with an interval of one week and by video. An Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) was applied for the reliability analysis and Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) was obtained, considering an α=0.05.ResultsA very good inter-rater reliability for the total score (ICC>0.98) and the sitting subscale (ICC>0.97) were registered. The other subscales showed moderate reliability, ICC between 0.54 and 0.64. Intra-rater reliability showed low to excellent ICC. The SEM was low for the standing, prone subscales and total score (0.20 to 0.77).Conclusions The AIMS is a reliable tool that can be used in our context by undergraduate physical therapy students in their year of study in order to assess motor development in clinically healthy children (AU)
