ABSTRACT

In our paper distinctive features of aerosol-drugs and the types of inhalers are presented. The authors indicate the possibility of aerosolotherapy as one of the supporting methods of treatment of patients with head and neck tumors: pracancerous states of the larynx (pachydermy, leucoplaky); states after laser CO2--surgery of tumour T1 of the larynx; states after surgical treatment widening true glottis narrowed by the paresis of nerve recur caused the tumour of thyroid gland or neighbouring structures; states after total laryngectomy; states in the course of or after complementary radiotherapy after surgical treatment head and neck tumour. On the basis of studied cases, which were treated with aerosol-drugs in Aerosolotherapy Unit, Department of Otolaryngology Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznan (Poland) in 1992-1998 years usefulness of this method in the states mentioned has been proved.

ABSTRACT

Primary neoplasms of parapharyngeal space are rare. In this location the so called non-malignant tumors occur many times more than the malignant ones. In our paper, employing statistics, objective symptoms and complaints connected with these tumors were ordered according to frequency. In recent five years in ENT Department of Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznan 9 persons were surgically treated. The differentiated histopathological picture is discussed and described (6 malignant and 3 non-malignant). It can be claimed that MR is more useful in diagnosis than CT. The treatment is usually surgical; both external and oral approaches are used.

ABSTRACT

61 patients with Down's syndrome were examined. Otitis media was diagnosed in 19 patients. Conductive hearing impairment after otitis media was observed in pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry. It was emphasized that conductive hearing loss in children with Down's syndrome is a very important factor in retarded speech development. Children with recurrent otitis media were treated by surgery (9 adenotomies) and conservative treatment such as insufflation and catheterisation of Eustachian tubes, pharmacotherapy. Treatment of otitis media was difficult because of anatomical anomalies of facialocranium, atrophic mucous membrane of upper respiratory tract, reduced immunity.

ABSTRACT

The majority of publications in the recent years emphasizes the importance of mucolytic preparations in the upper respiratory tract diseases. There have been very few report about the important role which mucolytic drugs may play in the diseases of the upper respiratory tract. This paper undertakes the task of attempting to evaluate the usefulness of Mucosolvan preparation in laryngological diseases. The main condition of the successful treatment of otolaryngological diseases is maintaining the efficient mechanism of the clearing of upper respiratory tract. This is achieved by means of the mucocilia apparatus, namely cilia and mucosa protecting the epithelium from harmful factors. Tests were carried out on 60 patients with paranasal sinuses and ear diseases. The first group comprised 45 patients who were qualified on the basis of inflammatory changes in paranasal sinuses. The second group comprised 12 children and 3 adults with otitis media with effusion. Mucosolvan which was used in the supplementary treatment fulfilled our expectations. The use of the mucolytic drug accelerated the healing process, proper regeneration of the epithelium and the reduction of the period of drug administration.

ABSTRACT

A rare case of carcinoma cuniculatum of the nasal cavity et paranasales sinuses is presented. This tumor is mature planoepithelial carcinoma, difficult to diagnose even by experienced histopathologists. It is characterized by very slow growth and local malignancy, develops it damages cartilages and bones.

ABSTRACT

In recent years there has been observed an increase in the infections of nose cavity and paranasal sinuses. This phenomenon is connected with a multidirectional alergization of the environment also with the insufficiency of conservative and surgical treatment. Messerklinger's research concerning cilial movements of mucosa in nasal and paranasal sinuses together with his endoscopic experiments are the basic for modern therapy of nasal and paranasal sinuses. In this paper 40 cases of acute and chronic inflammation of paranasal sinuses in children between 3 and 16 years of age were presented. In all cases regardless of the used method of conservative or surgical treatment children were given mucolytic preparations in the form of Mucosolvan by Boehringer Ingelheim. In all observed cases we noticed the shortening of the normal period of the antiinflammatory antibiotic treatment. A part from that, mucolitic preparations due to the decrease of mucous adhesiveness to the walls of paranasal sinuses allow for its evacuation largely decreasing the pain. After FESS treatment, the administration mucolytic preparations causes a factor regeneration of cilial epithelium, proper functioning of cilia and the speeding of mucocilial trnasport, which makes the recovery of an ill child much quicker.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was the examination of 60 children with Down's syndrome with particular attention paid to the organ of hearing. The investigation included anamnesis concerning the risk factors of hearing loss, psychomotoric development, otolaryngological examination, pure tone, impedance and speech audiometry. The main conclusion is: hearing impairment is more frequent in children with Down's syndrome (82.8%) than in normal population (0.5-2%). The type of hearing impairment is mainly conductive and mild degree.

ABSTRACT

The first qualification for cochlear implant "Nucleus" was performed on the basis of audiological tests. Next stage was conversation with a patient and his family about motivation of longterm rehabilitation. Then the two very important investigations were carried out--the computer tomography which showed inner ear structure, and electric promotory test. In rehabilitation process original "Nucleus" partially modified and Polish linguistic articulation lists were used.
