ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the association between length variation of the CD209L neck region and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 susceptibility, disease progression, and treatment response outcomes, we genotyped 139 HIV-1-seropositive and 109 seronegative individuals. The heterozygous genotype 6/5 showed a significant increased risk of HIV-1 infection (OR 3.03, 95% CI 0.99-9.33, p 0.046). Moreover, after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), HIV-1-seropositive individuals carrying the 6/5, 7/5 and 7/7 genotypes and alleles 5, 6 and 7 showed good CD4(+) T-cell recovery. In addition, individuals with the 7/5, 6/6 and 7/7 genotypes showed a significant decrease in viral load during the treatment period as compared with baseline (p < 0.05). Interestingly, we found that alleles 4 and 6 were associated with protection against AIDS progression. D209L variation may influence susceptibility to HIV-1, response to treatment, and disease progression.

ABSTRACT

Therapeutic of apexification with calcium hydroxide has been extensively used in clinical practice, but this technique has some drawbacks (long duration of treatment, weakening of the radicular walls). Different studies have proposed to close the apex opened with MTA (Mineral trioxide Aggregate) which is biocompatible, bacteriostatic, this material induces regeneration of the periapical region through the formation of cementum, bone and periodontal ligament (1, 2). This case report describes the technique of setting up in a single step of the Mineral trioxide Aggregate as an apical barrier for immature permanent roots. This method has allowed us an immediate apical sealing and a root canal filling and a coronary restore permanently as soon as possible. The radiological control confirmed that this type of apexification could be successful with periapical regeneration ad-integrum.

ABSTRACT

The goal of this study is to analyze using structural cephalometric superimpositions the quantity of mesial molar drift in the maximum anchorage cases, with mainly extractions of the first four premolars. Molar anchorage is appreciated in cases treated with or without use of directional forces. The influence of various parameters: age, facial divergence, discrepancy and incisor repositioning, on the loss of anchorage is also evaluated. The statistical study called upon the test of Student for independent groups. A value of the risk of first species p<0.05 was considered as significant. The loss of anchorage seems less important with the use of the directional forces. On the other hand it is raised in teenagers and the cases of important incisor repositioning.

ABSTRACT

STUDY AIM: The aim of this retrospective study was to report the results of the surgical treatment in 188 patients operated on for pulmonary aspergilloma in a series of 206 patients observed in Morocco. PATIENTS AND METHOD: From 1982 to 1998, 206 patients were treated for pulmonary aspergilloma in the same hospital; 188 were operated on and surgery was contraindicated in the other patients with general or respiratory failure. Hemoptysis was the main symptom, present in 190 patients (92%). Surgery was performed on principle with 108 lobectomies, 38 segmentectomies, 18 lobectomies and segmentectomies, 21 pleuropneumonectomies and 3 thoracoplasties. RESULTS: Postoperative complications occurred in 36% of the patients including: pyothorax (n = 15), hemothorax (n = 10), rehabitation defects (n = 17) and respiratory failure (n = 10). Reoperation was necessary in 6 patients. Postoperative mortality rate was 6.4% (12 patients including 5 treated by pleuro-pneumonectomy). CONCLUSION: The surgical treatment, in spite of its high morbidity, has to be proposed to all patients with pulmonary aspergilloma, even in asymptomatic patients when there is no surgical contraindication. Pleuropneumonectomy is a very high risk procedure and its indications must be restricted. Thoracoscopy was rarely performed in this series.

ABSTRACT

The current controversy on the predictive value of the Type A Behavior Pattern (TABP) as a coronary risk factor brought into a reconsideration of the assessment methods of this pattern. The Video Structured Interview (VSI) is a scoring method of TABP by a trained investigator, consisting of a rating scale based both on the content of the answers and on the psychomotor signs, with regard to the two main components of the TABP: sense of time urgency and hostility. The VSI appears a more objective instrument than self-assessment questionnaires, avoiding the bias of denial, a coping mechanism widely used by type A subjects. The VSI proved more sensitive and more specific than the self-assessment methods or the structured interview (SI), the initial instrument aimed to assess TABP among coronary risk patients in american populations. We here present the french version of the VSI, the technical modes of the interview and the principles of this scoring method, in order to introduce in France its use in further studies related with coronary risk factors.
