ABSTRACT

Silicon is an important anode material for lithium-ion batteries because of its high theoretical capacity. However, the large volume expansion of silicon anodes hinders its commercial utilization. As an alternative, silicon oxycarbides (SiOCs) mitigate the expansion of anodes during lithiation, and the synthesis of SiOC beads from silanes is rather simple and at a low cost. In this study, we compared three different reactor setups for making the SiOC beads from methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and found that the control of residence time was crucial. Thereby, the batch reactor turned out to be the easiest one for making monodispersed beads. We also reduced the O/Si ratio of the SiOC beads by adding dimethyldimethoxysilane (DMDMS) for better battery performance. The first-cycle delithiation capacity of the most stable material was over 1796 mA h/g, with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 82%, while the capacity retention after 170 cycles was 67% (992 mA h/g) at a charging rate of 2 A/g in the potential range of 0.01-3 V. This was among the best of the reported data so far for the SiOC beads from MTMS.

ABSTRACT

Mg, Fe co-doped near-stoichiometric lithium tantalite (SLT) single crystals were grown by employing the zone-leveling Czochralski (ZLCz) technique. The optical properties, holographic parameters, as well as the composition of the grown crystals were measured. It was found that the Li/Ta ratio decreased with the doping of Mg and Fe ions. A red shift was observed in absorption spectrum for the Mg, Fe co-doped crystals compared to the undoped and Mg-doped ones. The effect of the iron ions (Fe2+ and Fe3+) was further discussed based on the specified absorption bands. Moreover, the occupation mechanism for the defects was discussed by using the IR absorption spectrum, which was attributed to the FeTa3- defects in the highly Fe-doped crystal. In addition, the holographic parameters were also found to be improved with a higher Fe/Ta ratio in the crystals.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates a simple method for thickness estimation with single layer accuracy for self-assembling opal crystals prepared by the dip-coating method. The thickness (number of layers) of the opal crystals was estimated by an analysis of the optical reflectance from s-polarization incident light, and then verified with SEM. The opal crystals were considered as periodic dielectric layers and were analyzed with the transfer matrix method. The reflectance simulation showed a good agreement with the experimental results. The lattice constant and the thickness were determined at the peak position and by the fringes of the reflection spectra, respectively.
