ABSTRACT

Despite the paradigmatic nature of the Fermi-polaron model, the theoretical description of its nonlinear dynamics poses challenges. Here, we apply a quantum kinetic theory of driven polarons to recent experiments with ultracold atoms, where Rabi oscillations between a Fermi-polaron state and a noninteracting level were reported. The resulting equations separate decoherence from momentum relaxation, with the corresponding rates showing a different dependence on microscopic scattering processes and quasiparticle properties. We describe both the polaron ground state and the excited repulsive-polaron state and we find a good quantitative agreement between our predictions and the available experimental data without any fitting parameter. Our approach not only takes into account collisional phenomena, but also it can be used to study the different roles played by decoherence and the collisional integral in the strongly interacting highly imbalanced mixture of Fermi gases.

ABSTRACT

Wild boar trapping has been used as a management tool to control wild boar populations. However, it is increasingly criticized due to animal welfare concerns. While cortisol levels have been used to assess trap-related stress in wild boar, data on trap-related injuries and behavioral data are scarce. We aimed to evaluate three different corral-style traps for wild boar according to available mammal trapping standards to investigate and refine animal welfare in wild boar trapping. We examined 138 wild boars captured and killed by head shot in 27 capture events. Traps were closed by remote control only if the complete group were trapped. The behavior of the animals in the trap and during culling was recorded on video. All wild boars were examined and a pathological and radiological examination of the heads for trap- and shot-related injuries followed. Trap-related injuries occurred in 33% of the animals with superficial mild skin defects to skull fractures. One out of three traps met all the set requirements. A wire-meshed trapping system failed all. After installing an incomplete barrier in the center of the trap to slow down trapped animals, the fracture rate in one trap type was significantly reduced by 29% (p < 0.05). Our data showed that the type of trap (p = 0.007) and the number of animals trapped at once (p = 0.002) had a significant influence on the number of escape attempts. Trapping larger groups reduced the escape attempts. We emphasize the importance of an accurate pathological examination to evaluate animal welfare in traps and call for adjusting the injury categories listed in the standards and make a proposal for wild boar live trapping.

ABSTRACT

The main aim of the present study has been the completion of genome size data for the diverse arctic-alpine A. ciliata species complex, with special focus on the unexplored arctic taxon A. pseudofrigida, the north-European A. norvegica, and A. gothica from Gotland (Sweden). Altogether, 46 individuals of these three Nordic taxa have been sampled from seven different regions and their genome size estimated using flow cytometry. Three other alpine taxa in the A. ciliata complex (A. multicaulis, A. ciliata subsp. ciliata, and A. ciliata subsp. bernensis) were also collected and analyzed for standardization purposes, comprising 20 individuals from six regions. A mean 2c value of 1.65 pg of DNA was recorded for A. pseudofrigida, 2.80 pg for A. norvegica, and 4.14 pg for A. gothica, as against the reconfirmed 2c value of 1.63 pg DNA for the type taxon A. ciliata subsp. ciliata. Our results presenting the first estimations of genome sizes for the newly sampled taxa, corroborate ploidy levels described in the available literature, with A. pseudofrigida being tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40), A. norvegica possessing predominantly 2n = 8x = 80, and A. gothica with 2n = 10x = 100. The present study also reconfirms genome size and ploidy level estimations published previously for the alpine members of this species complex. Reflecting a likely complex recent biogeographic history, the A. ciliata species group comprises a polyploid arctic-alpine species complex characterized by reticulate evolution, polyploidizations and hybridizations, probably associated with rapid latitudinal and altitudinal migrations in the Pleistocene-Holocene period.

BACKGROUND: Migratory birds generally have tightly scheduled annual cycles, in which delays can have carry-over effects on the timing of later events, ultimately impacting reproductive output. Whether temporal carry-over effects are more pronounced among migrations over larger distances, with tighter schedules, is a largely unexplored question. METHODS: We tracked individual Arctic Skuas Stercorarius parasiticus, a long-distance migratory seabird, from eight breeding populations between Greenland and Siberia using light-level geolocators. We tested whether migration schedules among breeding populations differ as a function of their use of seven widely divergent wintering areas across the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. RESULTS: Breeding at higher latitudes led not only to later reproduction and migration, but also faster spring migration and shorter time between return to the breeding area and clutch initiation. Wintering area was consistent within individuals among years; and more distant areas were associated with more time spent on migration and less time in the wintering areas. Skuas adjusted the period spent in the wintering area, regardless of migration distance, which buffered the variation in timing of autumn migration. Choice of wintering area had only minor effects on timing of return at the breeding area and timing of breeding and these effects were not consistent between breeding populations. CONCLUSION: The lack of a consistent effect of wintering area on timing of return between breeding areas indicates that individuals synchronize their arrival with others in their population despite extensive individual differences in migration strategies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Benchmarking has been proposed to reflect surgical quality and represents the highest standard reference values for desirable results. We sought to determine benchmark outcomes in patients after surgery for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study included patients who underwent MTLE surgery at 19 expert centers on five continents. Benchmarks were defined for 15 endpoints covering surgery and epilepsy outcome at discharge, 1 year after surgery, and the last available follow-up. Patients were risk-stratified by applying outcome-relevant comorbidities, and benchmarks were calculated for low-risk ("benchmark") cases. Respective measures were derived from the median value at each center, and the 75th percentile was considered the benchmark cutoff. RESULTS: A total of 1119 patients with a mean age (range) of 36.7 (1-74) years and a male-to-female ratio of 1:1.1 were included. Most patients (59.2%) underwent anterior temporal lobe resection with amygdalohippocampectomy. The overall rate of complications or neurological deficits was 14.4%, with no in-hospital death. After risk stratification, 377 (33.7%) benchmark cases of 1119 patients were identified, representing 13.6%-72.9% of cases per center and leaving 742 patients in the high-risk cohort. Benchmark cutoffs for any complication, clinically apparent stroke, and reoperation rate at discharge were ≤24.6%, ≤.5%, and ≤3.9%, respectively. A favorable seizure outcome (defined as International League Against Epilepsy class I and II) was reached in 83.6% at 1 year and 79.0% at the last follow-up in benchmark cases, leading to benchmark cutoffs of ≥75.2% (1-year follow-up) and ≥69.5% (mean follow-up of 39.0 months). SIGNIFICANCE: This study presents internationally applicable benchmark outcomes for the efficacy and safety of MTLE surgery. It may allow for comparison between centers, patient registries, and novel surgical and interventional techniques.

ABSTRACT

Complex incubation strategies have evolved to solve the trade-off between parent survival and care for their eggs with often brief departures (recesses) that maximize egg survival, and infrequent extended recesses maximizing adult condition. Here we examined incubation behaviour of sanderlings (Calidris alba), a species that exhibits both biparental and uniparental incubation behaviour. During 11 breeding seasons in Greenland, we have quantified incubation variability with thermologgers placed in nests. We estimated the impact of environmental conditions and individual characteristics on the occurrence and the duration of recesses. We found that extended recesses are a unique feature of uniparentals, and their frequency and duration increased in colder temperatures. The relationship was mediated by body condition, with individuals in poor condition performing longer extended recesses in colder temperatures. This suggests that extended recesses may represent a shift towards self-maintenance at the expense of the egg care, allowing birds to continue incubating under unfavourable conditions. Our study illustrates how extended recesses may be a key breeding strategy to overcome high energetic costs associated with incubation. Quantifying such behavioural flexibility paves the way for tracking future behavioural responses of individuals in the face of changing environments.

ABSTRACT

Diffusion noise represents a major constraint to successful liquid state nano-NMR spectroscopy. Using the Fisher information as a faithful measure, we theoretically calculate and experimentally show that phase sensitive protocols are superior in most experimental scenarios, as they maximize information extraction from correlations in the sample. We derive the optimal experimental parameters for quantum heterodyne detection (Qdyne) and present the most accurate statistically polarized nano-NMR Qdyne detection experiments to date, leading the way to resolve chemical shifts and J couplings at the nanoscale.

ABSTRACT

The hippocampus is an essential hub for episodic memory processing. However, how human hippocampal single neurons code multi-element associations remains unknown. In particular, it is debated whether each hippocampal neuron represents an invariant element within an episode or whether single neurons bind together all the elements of a discrete episodic memory. Here we provide evidence for the latter hypothesis. Using single-neuron recordings from a total of 30 participants, we show that individual neurons, which we term episode-specific neurons, code discrete episodic memories using either a rate code or a temporal firing code. These neurons were observed exclusively in the hippocampus. Importantly, these episode-specific neurons do not reflect the coding of a particular element in the episode (that is, concept or time). Instead, they code for the conjunction of the different elements that make up the episode.

ABSTRACT

Age at onset of epilepsy is an important predictor of deterioration in naming ability following epilepsy surgery. In 141 patients with left hemispheric epilepsy and language dominance who received epilepsy surgery at the Epilepsy Centre Erlangen, naming of objects (Boston naming test, BNT) was assessed preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Surgical lesions were plotted on postoperative MRI and normalized for statistical analysis using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VBLSM). The correlation between lesion and presence of postoperative naming deterioration was examined varying the considered age range of epilepsy onsets. The VBLSM analysis showed that volumes of cortex areas in the left temporal lobe, which were associated with postoperative decline of naming, increased with each year of later epilepsy onset. In patients with later onset, an increasing left posterior temporobasal area was significantly associated with a postoperative deficit when included in the resection. For late epilepsy onset, the temporomesial expansion also included the left hippocampus. The results underline that early onset of epilepsy is a good prognostic factor for unchanged postoperative naming ability following epilepsy surgery. For later age of epilepsy onset, the extent of the area at risk of postoperative naming deficit at 6 months after surgery included an increasing left temporobasal area which finally also comprised the hippocampus.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies in neurological emergency rooms (nERs) have reported many non-acute, self-presenting patients, patients with delayed presentation of stroke, and frequent visits of persons with seizures (PWS). The aim of this study was to evaluate trends during the last decade, with special focus on PWS. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who presented to our specialized nER during the course of 5 months in 2017 and 2019, and included information on admission/referral, hospitalization, discharge diagnosis, and diagnostic tests/treatment in the nER. RESULTS: A total of 2791 patients (46.6% male, mean age 57 ± 21 years) were included. The most common diagnoses were cerebrovascular events (26.3%), headache (14.1%), and seizures (10.5%). Most patients presented with symptoms lasting >48 h (41.3%). The PWS group included the largest proportion of patients presenting within 4.5 h of symptom onset (171/293, 58.4%), whereas only 37.1% of stroke patients presented within this time frame (273/735). Self-presentation was the most common admission pathway (31.1%), followed by emergency service referral (30.4%, including the majority of PWS: 197/293, 67.2%). Despite known diagnosis of epilepsy in 49.2%, PWS more often underwent accessory diagnostic testing including cerebral imaging, compared to the overall cohort (accessory diagnostics 93.9% vs. 85.4%; cerebral imaging 70.1% vs. 64.1%). Electroencephalography in the nER was only performed in 20/111 patients (18.0%) with a first seizure. Nearly half of the patients (46.7%) were discharged home after nER work-up, including most self-presenters (632/869, 72.7%) and headache patients (377/393, 88.3%), as well as 37.2% (109/293) of PWS. CONCLUSION: After 10 years, nER overuse remains a problem. Stroke patients still do not present early enough, whereas PWS, even those with known epilepsy, often seek acute and extensive assessment, indicating gaps in pre-hospital management and possible over-assessment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: MRI-negative drug-resistant epilepsy presents a challenge when it comes to surgical planning, and surgical outcome is worse than in cases with an identified lesion. Although increasing implementation of more powerful MRI scanners and artificial intelligence has led to the detection of previously unrecognizable lesions, in some cases even postoperative pathological evaluation of electrographically epileptogenic zones shows no structural alterations. While in temporal lobe epilepsy a standardized resection approach can usually be performed, the surgical management of extra-temporal lesions is always individual. Here we present a strategy for treating patients with extra-temporal MRI-negative epilepsy focus and report our histological findings and patient outcome. METHODS: Patients undergoing epilepsy surgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Erlangen between 2012 and 2020 were included in the study. Inclusion criteria were: (1) failure to identify a structural lesion on preoperative high-resolution 3 Tesla MRI with a standardized epilepsy protocol and (2) preoperative intracranial EEG (iEEG) diagnostics. RESULTS: We identified 8 patients corresponding to the inclusion criteria. Second look MRI analysis by an experienced neuroradiologist including the most recent analysis algorithm utilized in our clinic revealed a possible lesion in two patients. One of the patients with a clear focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) finding on a second look was excluded from further analysis. Of the other 7 patients, in one patient iEEG was performed with subdural electrodes, whereas the other 6 were evaluated with depth electrodes. MEG was performed preoperatively in all but one patient. An MEG focus was implemented in resection planning in 3 patients. FDG PET was performed in all, but only implemented in one patient. Histopathological evaluation revealed one non-lesional case, 4 cases of FCD and 2 cases with mild developmental malformation. All patients were free from permanent neurological deficits and presented with Engel 1A or 1B outcome on the last follow-up. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate that extra-temporal MRI-negative epilepsy can be treated successfully provided an extensive preoperative planning is performed. The most important diagnostic was stereo-EEG, whereas additional data from MEG was helpful and FDG PET was rarely useful in our cohort.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Discrimination against persons with epilepsy (PWEs) may persist. The aim of this study was to examine whether epilepsy is an obstacle to desired friendship. METHODS: A factorial survey (vignettes), which is less biased by social desirability, was applied to PWEs, their relatives, and lay persons. The vignettes described a person who was varied by the dimensions of age (younger, same age, older), gender (male, female), disease (healthy, mild epilepsy, severe epilepsy [generalized tonic-clonic seizures], diabetes), origin (German, non-German), contact (phone/internet, activities at home, activities outside), frequency of contacts (weekly, monthly), and distance (around the corner, 10 km away). Respondents rated their willingness to befriend the person on a 10-point Likert scale. Multivariate regression determined the contribution of each dimension on the judgment. RESULTS: Participants were 64 PWEs (age = 37.1 ± 14.0 years), 64 relatives of PWEs (age = 45.1 ± 13.6 years), and 98 controls without contact with PWEs (age = 24.4 ± 10.1 years). Controls were less interested in a friendship with a PWE with mild epilepsy (-3.4%) and even more avoided PWEs with severe epilepsy (-11.7%), whereas in PWEs with tonic-clonic seizures, a mild form of epilepsy was actually conducive to friendship (+7.0%). Controls preferred females (+5.0%) and disliked younger people (-12.3%) and contacts via the internet or telephone (-7.3%). PWEs were also less interested in younger people (-5.8%), and relatives of PWEs had a lower preference for friendships with longer distance (-2.3%). SIGNIFICANCE: PWEs still suffer from a risk of social avoidance, and this becomes more evident with generalized motor seizures.

AIM: The aim of this study was to re-evaluate risk factors for post-ICH epilepsy (PICHE) and examine the impact of surgical hematoma evacuation on epilepsy development after ICH. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Epilepsy is a common complication after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Information on risk factors is still scarce and the role of ICH evacuation remains uncertain. METHODS: We retrospectively included patients with spontaneous ICH treated in our hospital in 2006-2019. Patients' medical records were analyzed. In addition, mailed questionnaires and telephone interviews were used to complete the dataset. Uni- and multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) were applied to investigate risk factors for PICHE and the impact of surgical ICH evacuation. RESULTS: Among 587 ICH patients available for analyses, 139 (23.7%) developed PICHE (mean follow-up 1795 ± 1378 days). The median time of epilepsy onset was 7 months after ICH (range 1-132 months). Risk factors associated with PICHE were cortical hemorrhage (multivariable HR 1.65 [95% CI 1.14-2.37]; p = 0.008), ICH volume > 10 ml (multivariable HR 1.91 [95% CI 1.33-2.73]; p < 0.001) and acute symptomatic seizures (multivariable HR 1.81 [95% CI 1.20-2.75]; p = 0.005). Patients with cortical ICH > 10 ml who underwent surgical hematoma evacuation were less likely to develop epilepsy than those with conservative treatment alone (multivariable HR 0.26 [95% CI 0.08-0.84]; p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: Post-ICH epilepsy is frequent and predicted by large cortical ICH and acute symptomatic seizures. Hematoma evacuation reduced the risk of PICHE by more than 70% in patients with large cortical ICH. This finding could be considered in the clinical decision making on the acute treatment of ICH.

ABSTRACT

Spin-based applications of the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamonds require an efficient spin readout. One approach is the spin-to-charge conversion (SCC), relying on mapping the spin states onto the neutral (NV0) and negative (NV-) charge states followed by a subsequent charge readout. With high charge-state stability, SCC enables extended measurement times, increasing precision and minimizing noise in the readout compared to the commonly used fluorescence detection. Nanoscale sensing applications, however, require shallow NV centers within a few nanometers distance from the surface where surface related effects might degrade the NV charge state. In this article, we investigate the charge state initialization and stability of single NV centers implanted ≈5 nm below the surface of a flat diamond plate. We demonstrate the SCC protocol on four shallow NV centers suitable for nanoscale sensing, obtaining a reduced readout noise of 5-6 times the spin-projection noise limit. We investigate the general applicability of the SCC for shallow NV centers and observe a correlation between the NV charge-state stability and readout noise. Coating the diamond with glycerol improves both the charge initialization and stability. Our results reveal the influence of the surface-related charge environment on the NV charge properties and motivate further investigations to functionalize the diamond surface with glycerol or other materials for charge-state stabilization and efficient spin-state readout of shallow NV centers suitable for nanoscale sensing.

BACKGROUND: In the last years, research on feline cardio-pulmonary parasites has considerably increased in Europe. Not only domestic cats (Felis catus), but also European wildcats (Felis silvestris) can serve as definitive hosts for these nematodes. The F. silvestris population in Germany has been growing rapidly within the last decades; therefore, the assessment of its cardio-pulmonary parasite status is of importance to unravel whether the wildcat population serves as a substantial reservoir for these nematodes and might pose a health threat to domestic cats. METHODS: As part of a nature conservation project for European wildcats in the German federal state Rhineland-Palatinate, lungs (n = 128) and hearts (n = 111) of 128 F. silvestris found dead were examined for cardio-pulmonary parasites. All isolated parasites were identified morphologically, and results were confirmed by molecular analysis of a total of 3-11 specimens of each worm species. RESULTS: A total of 70.3% (90/128) wildcats were positive for at least one lungworm species. Angiostrongylus chabaudi was most common (53.1% [68/128]), followed by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (42.2% [54/128]), Troglostrongylus brevior (31.3% [40/128]) and Capillaria spp. (3.1% [4/128]). Of note, about two-thirds of the infected wildcats harboured coinfections. Infection intensities ranged from 1 to 167 nematodes per wildcat. Generalised linear models revealed a strong correlation between A. chabaudi and A. abstrusus infection, and prevalences were higher in adult than in younger wildcats, except for T. brevior. Moreover, the T. brevior prevalence varied significantly with nutritional status. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that feline cardio-pulmonary nematodes are common parasites in European wildcats in Germany but do not appear to have a serious impact on the overall health of the population. Due to presumed spillover events via prey, cardio-pulmonary nematodes may circulate between the wildcat population and domestic cats and might therefore pose a health risk to individual domestic cats.

Aims and objectives: Digital teaching, learning and assessment have been part of medical education and continuing education for decades. The objective of this review paper is to highlight developments and perspectives in these areas in the GMS Journal for Medical Education (GMS JME). Methodology: In the spring of 2020, we conducted a systematic literature search of the Journal for Medical Education (JME) and analysed the articles with regard to different categories such as article type, digital tools used or mode of data collection. Results: Of the 132 articles analysed, 78 were digital interventions (53 of which were exploratory-descriptive), 28 were project descriptions, 16 were surveys of needs or equipment and 10 were concept papers. About one-third of the studies and project reports each dealt with virtual patients or case-based learning, whereas no articles were published on trends such as serious games or virtual reality. Overall, our analysis shows that in many respects, the studies on digital teaching were more broadly based, especially between 2006 and 2010, after which this trend tended to decline again. Conclusions: Our analysis shows that publications in the JME consider some key aspects of digital teaching in medical education and continuing education, such as educational videos or virtual patients. The variability of information and methods of presentation advocate the use of guidelines to optimise the quality of scientific papers. Furthermore, clues for future research topics and experimental study designs are identified.

ABSTRACT

Capture of wild boar in corral-style traps with subsequent culling is increasingly used for population management. The method is debated due to animal welfare concerns making welfare studies in traps necessary. While previous studies focused on behaviour and injuries, this study dealt with the physiological aspect. Cortisol levels in wild boar caught in corral-style traps (50-90 qm2, n = 138) were compared with those killed during single (n = 37) and driven hunts (n = 90). Collected sera were purified by solid phase extraction (SPE) and analysed via radioimmunoassay. Cortisol levels in blood samples were stable under cooled (4-7 °C) conditions for a storage time of up to 87 h before centrifugation. Cortisol levels were significantly higher in wild boar killed in corral-style traps than during driven hunts and single hunts. Wild boar caught in groups of five or more showed lower cortisol levels than single animals or in smaller groups. Therefore, time span inside the trap and of culling should be reduced to a minimum, and capturing groups of animals should be preferred to reduce stress. For animal welfare assessment of wild boar live-trapping, additional data from behavioural analyses and pathological examinations must be integrated.

ABSTRACT

Modifying light fields at the single-photon level is a key challenge for upcoming quantum technologies and can be realized in a scalable manner through integrated quantum photonics. Laser-written diamond photonics offers 3D fabrication capabilities and large mode-field diameters matched to fiber optic technology, though limiting the cooperativity at the single-emitter level. To realize large coupling efficiencies, we combine excitation of single shallow-implanted silicon vacancy centers via high numerical aperture optics with detection assisted by laser-written type-II waveguides. We demonstrate single-emitter extinction measurements with a cooperativity of 0.0050 and a relative beta factor of 13%. The transmission of resonant photons reveals single-photon subtraction from a quasi-coherent field resulting in super-Poissonian light statistics. Our architecture enables light field engineering in an integrated design on the single quantum level although the intrinsic cooperativity is low. Laser-written structures can be fabricated in three dimensions and with a natural connectivity to optical fiber arrays.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine patients' characteristics and regions in the temporal lobe where resections lead to a decline in picture naming. METHODS: 311 patients with left hemispheric dominance for language were included who underwent epilepsy surgery at the Epilepsy Center of Erlangen and whose picture naming scores (Boston Naming Test, BNT) were available preoperatively and 6-months postoperatively. Surgical lesions were mapped to an averaged template based on preoperative and postoperative MRI using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VBLSM). Postoperative brain shifts were corrected. The relationship between lesioned brain areas and the presence of a postoperative naming decline was examined voxel-wise while controlling for effects of overall lesion size at first in the total cohort and then restricted to temporal lobe resections. RESULTS: In VBLSM in the total sample, a decline in BNT score was significantly related to left temporal surgery. When only considering patients with left temporal lobe resections (n = 121), 40 (33.1%) significantly worsened in BNT postoperatively. VBLSM including all patients with left temporal resections generated no significant results within the temporal lobe. However, naming decline of patients with epilepsy onset after 5 years of age was significantly associated with resections in the left inferior temporal (extent of BNT decline range: 10.8- 14.4%) and fusiform gyrus (decline range: 12.1-18.4%). SIGNIFICANCE: Resections in the posterior part of the dominant fusiform and inferior temporal gyrus was associated with a risk of deterioration in naming performance at six months after surgery in patients with epilepsy onset after 5 years of age but not with earlier epilepsy onset.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Because resources are limited in modern health care systems, the decision on the allocation of expensive drugs can be supported by a public consent. This study examines how various factors influence subjectively perceived "fair" pricing of antiseizure medication (ASM) among four groups including physicians, persons with epilepsy (PWEs), their relatives, and a control group. METHODS: We conducted a factorial survey. Vignettes featured a fictional PWE receiving a fictional ASM. The characteristics of the fictional PWE, ASM, and epilepsy varied. Participants were asked to assess the subjectively appropriate annual cost of ASM treatment per year for each scenario. RESULTS: Fifty-seven PWEs (mean age (SD) 37.7 ± 12.3, 45.6% female), 44 relatives (age 48.4 ± 15.7, 51.1% female), 46 neurologists (age 37.1 ± 9.6, 65.2% female), and 47 persons in the control group (age 31.2 ± 11.2, 68.1% female) completed the questionnaire. The amount of money that respondents were willing to spend for ASM treatment was higher than currently needed in Germany and increased with disease severity among all groups. All groups except for PWEs accepted higher costs of a drug with better seizure control. Physicians and the control group, but not PWEs and their relatives, tended to do so also for minor or no side effects. Physicians reduced the costs for unemployed patients and the control group spent less money for older patients. SIGNIFICANCE: ASM effectiveness appears to justify higher costs. However, the control group attributed less money to older PWEs and physicians allocated fewer drug costs to unemployed PWEs.
