ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Evaluation of postoperative pulmonary atelectasis using a portable computed tomography (CT) unit. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 5 spiral CT-examinations in low-dose technique were performed on each of 10 patients with partial pulmonary atelectasis after coronary bypass surgery. The patients were artificially ventilated using different levels (0 to +15 cm H2O) of positive end-exspiratory pressure (PEEP). The changes in atelectatic volumes were determined for each side. RESULTS: In 6 patients the primary volume of atelectasis was larger on the left side than on the right. Atelectatic volumes decreased with increasing PEEP. Re-expansion of atelectases was significantly (p < 0.01) better with a PEEP of +15 cm H2O. CONCLUSION: Computed tomography allows visualisation of postoperative atelectasis reliably, even in the low-dose technique. Concordantly, additional therapeutically relevant side findings can be detected compared to conventional chest X-ray. Risky patient transport becomes unnecessary.

ABSTRACT

601 faecal samples, 232 gastrointestinal tracts and 209 lungs from hedgehogs (Erinaceus europeaus L.) have been investigated parasitologically in the winter time of the years from 1980/81 to 1985/86. Developmental stages of parasites were discovered in 517 (= 86.0%) of the investigated faecal samples. 180 (= 86.0%) lungs harboured the worms of Crenosma striatum and/or Capillaria aerophilia. A total of 216 (= 93.1%) of the 232 investigated gastrointestinal tracts were parasitized with Capillaria spp., Brachylaemus erinacei, and Coccidia, respectively.

ABSTRACT

In 103 cases, liver metastases were found in 40 at autopsy. Of these, 34 could be further evaluated. In 15, the metastases had been demonstrated by scintigraphy. Six patients were not examined because of the rapid course of the disease, and in a further two diffuse metastases in the liver were not recognised. Of the patients in whom metastases had been missed, in eight the deposits were less than 1 cm, in another eight they were between 1 and 2 cm and, in the remaining three patients, they were between 2 and 3 cm. The findings are discussed in detail. False positive or inconclusive findings were obtained in two patients (3.2%). All thirteen cases with cirrhosis of the liver were correctly diagnosed. In four patients abnormalities of the liver parenchyma were incorrectly diagnosed (false positive). Patients with fatty livers were diagnosed equally as normal or as having parenchymal damage.

ABSTRACT

Light-oriented chloroplast movement is reversibly inhibited by cytochalasin B. The photoperception is not influenced by this inhibitor. These results support the assumption that contractile protein fibrils are essential for this intracellular movement.
