ABSTRACT

Ultrastructure of both liposarcomas of different histological types and those with non-verified diagnosis are studied. Liposarcomas are shown to contain a basic complex of ultrastructural features of lipid differentiation and different histological types of these tumours have, in principle, identical features varying in the degree of their expression. The questions of a differential diagnosis of liposarcomas and other tumours can be successfully solved on the basis of the above findings, and even more, a group of liposarcomas with a severe cataplasia that does not have histological analogues may be distinguished. The results allowed to work out an ultrastructural classification of liposarcomas in which the degree of cataplasia is directly taken into account.

ABSTRACT

Human embryonal liposarcoma and embryonal fat have been studied histologically, in semithin sections, and electronmicroscopically. Specific ultrastructural features of embryonal liposarcomas allowing them to distinguish from other tumours are as follows: the presence of lipid vacuoles varying in size, number and structure, small mitochondria with dense matrix, specific filamentous apparatus, basal-like material in plasma cell membrane and in the intercellular space cytoplasmic sprouts forming peculiar "pockets" and general cell architectonics. Similarities and differences in the ultrastructure of embryonal liposarcomas and embryonal fat are found.

ABSTRACT

The paper reports the results of a study of 586 gastrobioptical and cytological preparations obtained in the course of endoscopic examination of 223 patients with gastritis, polyps and gastric ulcers and resected material from 46 patients who had small-size malignant tumors of the stomach (up to 1 cm in dia). Gastrobiopsy revealed dysplasia-like changes in the epithelium in 33% of cases of chronic gastric diseases. Dysplasia in the mucosa surrounding tumor was identified in all cancer patients. Three degrees of dysplasia of gland epithelium--mild, moderate and severe--were distinguished, each allowing further division into two classes. It is suggested that patients with dysplasia of gastric mucosa epithelium, identified by gastrobiopsy, should be referred to a group at high risk and followed up closely.

ABSTRACT

A comparative study was made on different morphological pictures of the sinuses of the regional lymph nodes in gastric cancer patients with T1--4N0M0 with a 5-year survival, also the influence of age, depth of invasion, size and histological structure of the tumor on sinus histiocytosis was studied. Marked sinus histiocytosis, contrary to sinus fibrosis, was found to be a favourable prognostic sign. Sinus histiocytosis is influenced in a somewhat directly proportional way by the tumor size and histological differentiation. The given material rendered impossible to reveal any effect of age and depth of tumor invasion on sinus histiocytosis.

ABSTRACT

The data are reported on studying the stromal response of 19 melanomas of analogous localization, showing the same type of growth, histological structure, the level of invasion and area of ulceration in patients with positive and negative delayed hypersensitivity reaction to injection of the polysaccharide fraction from melanoma tissue. A high degree of pronouncement of lymphoid-cellular infiltration of tumor stroma correlated with a positive delayed hypersensitivity response, whereas a low degree -- with a negative one.

ABSTRACT

Six human vascular neoplasms were studied in light and electron microscopes. Electron microscopic examinations revealed specific ultrastructural features of tumour pericytes, cells of smooth-muscle tumours and tumour endothelium. Some tumours were found to be polymorphic in their cellular composition. The electron microscopy method revealed polymorphism of the tumour with diffuse distribution of cell elements (the presence of endothelial strata in hemangiopericytoma or the presence of the pericytic component in an endothelioma) but proved to be of low effectiveness in focal distribution of cell elements. It is concluded from the foregoing that simultaneous utilization of light and electron microscopy is necessary for vertification of such complicated neoplasms as vascular tumours of man.

ABSTRACT

Based on the study of clinical and morphological criteria for estimation of the efficacy of distance gammatherapy under hyperbaric oxygenation in the combined treatment of patients with soft tissue sarcomas, it was concluded that hyperbaric oxygenation employed in radiotherapy contributed to the increased rate of neoplasms damage. The latter resulted in a decreased percentage of the recurrence. The attenuation of local radiation and less number of postoperative complications indicate that healthy tissues surrounding the tumor are preserved. No rise in the percentage of distant metastases was noted in irradiation under hyperbaric oxygenation.

ABSTRACT

A total of three observations on alveolar microlithiasis are described: two in female patients aged 19 and 44, and one in a man aged 56 years. In two patients diagnosis was established following biopsy of the lung tissue, and in one--posthumously. Basing on the literature data, the authors discuss problems of pathogenesis, clinico-morphological manifestations and differential diagnosis of the disease.
