ABSTRACT

Aims: To assess the use of digital photography in dentistry and its relation with the professional experience of the dental practitioners in Romania. Methods: An anonymous questionnaire including eight questions was distributed online to collect information on the use of dental photography. Results: 84.84% of the respondents were using a photographic equipment in their clinical practice. Regarding the type of photographic equipment used, 51.79% of the participants indicated DSLR cameras, 44.05% smartphones, 2.38% compact cameras and 1.78% other devices for taking clinical images. There was a significant association (p<0.05) between the experience of the practitioners and the use of dental photography, type of equipment and protocol used. Conclusions: Respondents with more than 10 years of experience were more likely to use digital photography in their practice than those with less experience. Most of the digital photography users with more than 10 years of experience were taking images with a DSLR Camera (65.52%) followed by 31.04% smartphone users. Conversely, 56.42% of the clinical photography users with less than 5 years of experience mainly preferred a smartphone device and 41.02% a DSLR Camera.

ABSTRACT

Aims To investigate the influence of the system used for digital photography upon the aesthetic analysis in dental medicine.Materials and methods The aesthetic parameters were evaluated on photographs taken with different systems: two DSLR camera set-ups (DSLR + ring flash and DSLR + twin flash) and a smartphone-based system using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire.Results Generally, the DSLR camera + twin flash photographic method performed the best with an overall average score of 4.3, receiving the highest scores for eight statements included in the questionnaire, followed by the smartphone-based system with an average score of 4.04 (the highest values for three statements) and DSLR camera + ring flash with an average score of 3.92 (the highest values for four statements). The scores recorded for the images taken with the DSLR camera + twin flash, DSLR camera + ring flash and smartphone-based system were significantly different for each statement (p <0.05).Conclusions When analysing the characteristics of the dental arches and of individual teeth, images taken with the DSLR camera and twin flash photographic method received the best evaluation, while for the examination of the dentofacial relations and the gingival characteristics, the images obtained with the DSLR camera and ring flash setting, respectively, with the smartphone-based system were considered optimal.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIM: The biomaterials used in guided bone regeneration have undergone significant diversification in recent years. This study aimed to evaluate alveolar bone addition and bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) expression using an improved autologous and xenogeneic biomaterial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chronic marginal periodontitis was induced in sheep; the intervention group received bone addition as periodontal therapy, using a composite system with lyophilized bovine bone enriched with atelocollagen type 1, platelet-rich plasma and advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF). Six weeks after the intervention, the dentoalveolar structures were evaluated using hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining, to evaluate bone addition and BMP7 expression. RESULTS: The untreated sheep showed inflammation, periodontal ligament destruction, remnants of calculus and bacterial plaque as well as foreign bodies in the desmodontal space, without sings of repair. In the treated sheep, fibroblasts/fibrosis, cartilage and/or new bone, cellular cementum and desmodontium, along with remnants of biomaterial with various degrees of cellularity were observed. In the untreated group, the presence of BMP7 was found in osteoblasts and osteocytes while in the treated group, it was mainly found in the biomaterial remnants, while immunohistochemical staining was less intense in the newly formed osteo-periodontal tissues. Quantitative analysis using the Mann-Whitney U-test showed highly statistically significant differences between the two groups, demonstrating the efficiency of this composite system. CONCLUSION: The current composite system meets all the necessary conditions for promising guided alveolar bone regeneration.

BACKGROUND: The updated model for the mechanism of gastric carcinogenesis demonstrates that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a risk factor in every step of the process. The expression of certain gastric mucins is altered by H. pylori infection in adult patients. The aim of our research was to assess the impact of H. pylori infection on the expression of secretory mucins in the pediatric antral mucosa. METHODS: Slides were stained with monoclonal antibodies for MUC5AC, MUC6 and MUC2, digitalized and scored using both a semiquantitative and a quantitative approach. RESULTS: The expression of MUC5AC was significantly lower in infected children. Also, MUC2 expression was more pronounced in infected children. MUC6 expression did not differentiate between infected and noninfected children. Additionally, the presence of chronic inflammation significantly altered the expression of MUC6 and MUC2. The expression of MUC6 was significantly higher in patients with gastric atrophy. CONCLUSION: The minor differences in mucin expression at distinct ages might stem from different H. pylori exposure periods. Further research is needed to determine the particular patterns of expression according to age and to evaluate the effects of the interaction between H. pylori and mucins in the progression of the gastric carcinogenesis cascade.

BACKGROUND: Current pediatric guidelines recommend the use of the Updated Sydney Classification for gastritis to assess histological changes caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphometric alterations of the antral mucosa in relation to pediatric H. pylori infection. METHODS: A total of 65 cases were considered eligible. Apart from scoring the biopsies according to the recommendations, foveolar hyperplasia (FH) was assessed. The following measurements were performed on digital slides: total mucosal thickness, foveolar and glandular length, number of glandular cross sections per 40X field, glandular diameter, and distance between glands. RESULTS: The thickness of the antral mucosa increased along with the bacterial density and the intensity of inflammation in H. pylori-infected children (p < 0.05). FH was significantly associated with the presence of H. pylori (p < 0.001) and also exhibited a greater length of the foveolar and glandular structures and an increased glandular diameter (p < 0.05), but without influencing the thickness of the mucosa. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reinforce the fact that FH is not only an important histologic characteristic of gastropathy, but is also a significant change observed in H. pylori infection in children and may be considered for reporting when evaluating pediatric gastric biopsies.

INTRODUCTION: p16INK4a immunohistochemistry (IHC) is widely used to facilitate the diagnosis of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated neoplasia, when ≥70% of cells show strong nuclear and cytoplasmic positivity. In this study, we aim to compare partial expression patterns that do not fulfill the above criteria and seek biological implications in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: p16INK4a IHC staining was conducted on representative sections of archived tissue from 88 LSCCs. Immunoreactivity was described based on four parameters: intracellular localization of immunostaining, intensity of immunostaining, distribution pattern and percentage of positive cells. RESULTS: Six patterns of p16INK4a immunoexpression were observed and defined as: strong diffuse (strong immunostaining, expression in cytoplasm and nucleus in >70% of tumor cells), weak diffuse (moderate or weak immunostaining, expression in cytoplasm in >70% of tumor cells), marginal (strong cytoplasmic immunostaining, limited to the periphery of tumor islets), strong scattered (strong immunostaining, expression in cytoplasm and nucleus in <50% of tumor cells), weak scattered (moderate or weak immunostaining, expression in cytoplasm in <50% of tumor cells), negative (no expression). The pN stage of the patients was associated with p16INK4a immunoexpression patterns, the marginal pattern was only found in the pN0-Nx stages, while the weak diffuse pattern was more frequently observed in pN2-N3 stages. CONCLUSIONS: Partial immunostaining with architecturally distinct p16INK4a immunoexpression patterns may prove significant in stratifying characteristic clinicopathological subgroups among LSCC. Our observations may support the hypothesis that p16INK4a has different roles in different subcellular locations, with tumorigenic molecular pathways unrelated to HPV infection.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of a polarizing filter on the accuracy of dental shade matching using digital photography. A comparison was performed using ΔEab parameters between CIE L*a*b* values obtained from digital images taken under two different conditions (with direct light and with polarized light) and the values given by the dental spectrophotometer SpectroShade Micro, which is considered to be the standard. Color differences (ΔEab) calculated between the parameters recorded with the dental spectrophotometer and polarized photography were below or at the level of the 50:50% acceptability threshold of 2.7 in 23% of the cases. Interdevice agreement found between the dental spectrophotometer and polarized photography exceeded 0.82 for all the three parameters recorded. Digital photography with polarizing filters might be a useful tool for dental shade matching.

ABSTRACT

The present study refers to a quantitative, morphometric analysis of exfoliative cytology smears collected from diabetes mellitus (DM) patients, in order to distinguish subtle changes in cellular and nuclear parameters. The study was carried out on 30 adult subjects: a control group of 10 healthy subjects and a study group of 20 diabetic subjects (type 1 and type 2 DM). Another factor that was taken into consideration was the abundance of the microbial flora. The oral smears were stained using Hematoxylin and Eosin and several parameters were measured (nuclear diameter, perimeter and area, cell large diameter and area), and calculated: nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio and nuclear roundness factor. We found out that the cells collected from DM patients had higher values of the nuclear parameters (the nuclei were larger) and lower cell dimensions. The nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio was increased in these patients, but the nuclear roundness factor was closer to one in the study group. Also, an increased number of bacteria, often seen in DM patients, decreased the nuclear parameters. Our findings complete recently descriptive cytology studies with the morphological measurements in case of bacterial abundance and sustain the possible value as screening method for morphometry.
