ABSTRACT

The combined impact of high-hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and ultrasound (US) on the cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside (C3R), quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (Q3R), and volatile compounds from fig (Ficus carica) paste was investigated. The HHP increased the content of C3R and Q3R, from 70 to 133 mg/kg fw and 31 to 44 mg/kg fw, respectively. The combination of HHP and US further enhanced the extraction of these bioactive compounds. Specifically, processing fig paste with US for 5 min at 40 °C yielded approximately 250 mg of C3R/kg fw and 45 mg of Q3R/kg fw, after 20 min. More than 25 volatile compounds were identified, with benzaldehyde being the predominant compound, accounting > 75%. Trace amounts of hydroxymethylfurfural (< 0.36 mg/100 g fw) were detected in HHP-processed fig paste. The application of HHP at mild temperatures and short time, combined with US, effectively promotes the content of bioactive compounds present in fig paste without adversely affecting the fruit's volatile compounds. ABSTRACT

The economy of a country is exposed to disruptions caused by natural and man-made disasters. Here we present a set of probabilistic risk indicators, the Average Annual Loss (AAL) and the Loss Exceedance Curve (LEC), regarding to production, employment, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Gross Regional Product (GRP), export volume, inflation, tariff revenue, among others, due to earthquakes. All indicators are computed using a systematic probabilistic approach, which integrates the seismic risk assessment with spatial computable general equilibrium models, both robust and well-known frameworks used worldwide in their respective fields. Our approach considers the induced damage and frequency of occurrence of a vast collection of events that collectively describe the entire seismic hazard of a country, giving us a better and more complete understanding of the full consequence of earthquakes. We illustrate this approach with an example developed for Chile.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: vegan diets exclude the consumption of animal-derived products, and health advantages have been reported when followed. However, heterogeneous eating habits, food availability, and sociocultural characteristics among regions could lead to different physiological results Case reports: twelve patients following a strict vegan diet for an uninterrupted period of ≥ 3 years were subjected to clinical assessment. Patients significantly exceeded the suggested intake for sugar, presented six mineral deficiencies, and exhibited three vitamins below the recommended consumption. We further identified hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, subnormal serum vitamin B12 concentrations, as well as macrocytosis and microcytic anemia in several participants. Discussion: this Mexican vegan diet is strongly influenced by endemic and cultural adaptations that could limit the benefits reported in other populations. Professional guidance is required to avoid specific deficiencies with potential repercussions. We urge country-specific vegan guidelines considering local eating habits, food availability, and sociocultural perspectives around food (AU)


Introducción: la dieta vegana excluye el consumo de productos de origen animal y se ha vinculado con una disminución del riesgo de morbimortalidad. Sin embargo, los distintos hábitos alimentarios entre países podrían condicionar los beneficios reportados para las dietas basadas en vegetales. Casos clínicos: doce pacientes siguiendo una estricta dieta vegana por ≥ 3 años se sometieron a una evaluación clínica. Exhibieron una ingestión de azúcar que supera el consumo sugerido, presentaron tres deficiencias vitamínicas y seis de minerales. Se identificó la presencia de hiperglucemia, hipertrigliceridemia, concentraciones séricas subnormales de vitamina B12, macrocitosis y anemia microcítica en varios participantes. Discusión: la dieta vegana de este grupo resultó fuertemente influenciada por adaptaciones culturales que podrían limitar los beneficios reportados en otras poblaciones. Se requiere orientación profesional para evitar desequilibrios nutricionales. Enfatizamos la necesidad del desarrollo de guías alimentarias y de práctica clínica que consideren los hábitos alimentarios locales, la disponibilidad de alimentos en la región y las perspectivas socioculturales en torno a la dieta vegana (AU)

ABSTRACT

Survival depends on a balance between seeking rewards and avoiding potential threats, but the neural circuits that regulate this motivational conflict remain largely unknown. Using an approach-food vs. avoid-predator threat conflict test in rats, we identified a subpopulation of neurons in the anterior portion of the paraventricular thalamic nucleus (aPVT) which express corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) and are preferentially recruited during conflict. Inactivation of aPVTCRF neurons during conflict biases animal's response toward food, whereas activation of these cells recapitulates the food-seeking suppression observed during conflict. aPVTCRF neurons project densely to the nucleus accumbens (NAc), and activity in this pathway reduces food seeking and increases avoidance. In addition, we identified the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) as a critical input to aPVTCRF neurons, and demonstrated that VMH-aPVT neurons mediate defensive behaviors exclusively during conflict. Together, our findings describe a hypothalamic-thalamostriatal circuit that suppresses reward-seeking behavior under the competing demands of avoiding threats.

ABSTRACT

Isolated limb perfusion (ILP) is a method for treating unresectable lesions of limbs in patients with melanoma or sarcoma by using high doses of tumor necrosis factor alpha and melphalan. These high doses can result in high systemic toxicity if there is a drug leak from the isolated circulation of the limb to the systemic. This makes it imperative to monitor the leakage rate (F[%]) during the infusion, currently performed with radiotracers. The objective of this work was to develop a leakage monitoring protocol as accurate as possible to ensure safe ILP. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We built a phantom with 3compartments (body, limb and precordial area) and a high sensitivity collimator fitted to a portable gammacamera. We simulate ILP with scheduled leaks every 10minutes from 1% to 9% (theorical F[%]). We mesured F(%) using 2equation: one is the proposed in the literature and another corrected by decay of the radioisotope. We test the optimal radiopharmaceutical doses to minimize the detector dead time error and compare F(%) mesured by both equations regarding the theoretical F(%). The leakage monitoring protocol was used in 17 ILP of 16 patients and an analysis of the recorded data was performed. RESULTS: We found significant differences between F(%) mesured using the first equation and theoretical F(%), obtaining results very adjusted to the theorical after applying the decay correction. CONCLUSIONS: The decay correction of the radioisotope is a simple manner to carry out the procedure more safely, reducing the error in the calculation of F(%).

ABSTRACT

Water quality degradation by organochlorine pesticides and potentially toxic elements is of worldwide concern. This research explores groundwater conditions, regarding organochlorine pesticides and potentially toxic elements, in Hopelchen, Campeche, which is located in the buffer zone of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. Unfortunately, agriculture is allowed and agrochemical use is not monitored and sanctioned. Results show that Heptachlor, Endosulfan, and Dieldrin, all recognized carcinogens, had concentrations above the Mexican normative recommended values. Conversely, Cd and Ni concentrations were below recommended values. These results demonstrate that government intervention involving immediate control over agrochemical use is mandatory. Also, the results underscore the contamination of groundwater in several of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve's buffer zones by organochlorine pesticides concentrations, posing a probable threat for local inhabitants who consume this water and use it for recreation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Ceramide is a sphingolipid with anti-angiogenic and pro-apoptotic properties that has shown to be increased in plasma of women with pre-eclampsia. We aimed to compare plasma and placental sphingolipid content among normotensive pregnant women and pre-eclamptic women with and without HELLP syndrome and we aimed to assess whether ceramide is related to hypertension and proteinuria in pre-eclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study. Participants were recruited from the Department of Obstetrics at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In total 48 pregnant women were included: 24 with pre-eclampsia and 24 normotensive controls. Of the 24 pre-eclamptic women, 11 had HELLP syndrome. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Plasma and placental ceramide content and correlation with blood pressure and protein excretion in pre-eclampsia. RESULTS: Total plasma, but not placental, ceramide was higher in pre-eclamptic women with HELLP syndrome (11200 95% CI 9531-12870 nmol/ml, n = 11) compared to pre-eclamptic women without HELLP (7413 95% CI 5928-8898 nmol/ml, n = 13, p < 0.001) and normotensive pregnant women (7404 95% CI 6695-8112 nmol/ml, n = 24, p < 0.001). Maternal circulating ceramide levels were strongly associated with proteinuria (r = 0.621, n = 24, p = 0.001) in pre-eclamptic women and inversely correlated with gestational age at delivery (r = 0.771, p < 0.01) in pre-eclamptic women with HELLP syndrome. Plasma ceramide was not correlated with blood pressure. CONCLUSION: Plasma but not placental ceramide content is increased in women with pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. The strong positive correlation with proteinuria and the inverse correlation with gestational age at delivery indicate that excess plasma ceramide may contribute to the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia and HELLP.

ABSTRACT

Phenolic compounds (PC) have been proposed as natural antioxidant agents that protect cells against oxidative stress-related diseases. Nonetheless, their low bioavailability forecasts controversy about mechanisms on their in vivo scavenging activity against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It has been proposed that PC reduce directly ROS concentration. An alternative or complementary action of PC could be the activation of the cell's antioxidant pathway, involving the regulation of gene expression, like that initiated by the Nrf2 transcription factor. To date there is not enough experimental data to support or discard this possibility. In the present study, we evaluated the use of several PC to prevent peroxidation of macromolecules and to elicit the activation of the Nrf2 transcription factor in H2O2-stresed IEC-6 enterocytic cell line. Synchrotron microspectroscopy demonstrated that PC compounds protected proteins, lipids and nucleic acids against oxidation induced by H2O2. Immunofluorescence results showed that treatment with quercetin (Qc), catechin (Cat) and capsaicin (Cap) induced the translocation of Nrf2 into the nucleus, at the same level as did H2O2 treatment, thus mimicking the action of the endogenous cell response to peroxidation. Even though the detailed mechanism still needs to be elucidated, we demonstrated the activation of Nrf2 by PCs in response to oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT

The locally elaborated shrimp pâté is highly susceptible to microbial spoilage and deterioration during storage due to its content in nutrients. These conditions limit its commercialization in a larger scale. High hydrostatic pressure is an alternative to heat treatments technology used to inactivate microorganisms. The aim of this project was to evaluate the effect of high hydrostatic pressure on quality parameters and microbiological stability of Pacific white shrimp ( Litopenaeus vannamei) pâté during storage. Shrimp pâté was pressurized to 400, 500 and 600 MPa for 90 and 180 s. Samples were analysed for physicochemical, microbiological and flavour profile up to 21 days of storage at 4 ℃. A hedonic test was made to evaluate the acceptance of pâté. No microorganisms were detected at 600 MPa for 180 s and a shelf life of 14 days was reached. No relevant changes in pH or colour of pressurized samples were detected; flavour profile did not show any changes after being pressurized or during storage. Shrimp pâté treated with 600 MPa for 180 s presented good sensory acceptance. High hydrostatic pressure treatments could improve microbiological quality of shrimp pâté without a sensible modification of the physicochemical and sensorial qualities of this product.

INTRODUCTION: Retinoblastoma is the most frequent malignant intraocular tumour in childhood, and both its cure and the sequelae arising from it, mainly depend on an early diagnosis. There is currently no consensus on its diagnostic and therapeutic management. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, and non-randomised study was conducted on a series of cases (39 patients -58 eyes), treated during the period 2006-2013, in the Regional Reference Centre for Tumours of the National Health Service Quality Agency. RESULTS: The most frequent presentation sign is leukocoria (71.8%), followed by strabismus (17.9%). All cases of bilateral tumour had a germline mutation of the RB1 gene, and 20% had a family history. Stage E was observed in 55% of the patients, and 90% required chemotherapy treatment. The eye was maintained in 57% of those who had mild stages, compared to 43% who maintained it in advanced stages. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis included 58 eyes. There are no previous studies in our community and there are few series so numerous throughout the country. Based on non-standardised treatment, the most appropriate is chosen according to the characteristics of the tumour. The multidisciplinary management, formed by ophthalmology, paediatric oncology, radiotherapy, and radiophysical oncology, is fundamental for the selection of the most appropriate treatment. Chemo-reduction, along with consolidation treatments, offers encouraging results in the control of these tumours, especially in those of less severity. Enucleation continues to be the method of choice in the most advanced staging with vitreous involvement, with the importance of early diagnosis being highlighted.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Adduct congenital talipes equinovarus (CTE) or clubfoot is a common musculoskeletal malformation affecting between 1 and 4.5 out of every 1000 live births. It is usually associated with arthrogryposis and Moebius syndrome with the latter two being more difficult to treat as they require aggressive surgery to achieve a plantigrade foot. We therefore ask what is the evidence level and grade of recommendation of the Ponseti method to treat syndromic talipes equinovarus resulting from arthrogryposis and Moebius syndrome. METHODS: Systematic review according to the recommendations of the Cochrane group identifying medical subheadings (MeSH) and of the Boolean method to identify the articles that met the selection criteria through the search of primary sources such as OVID, Cochrane, EBSCOhost, Elsevier, Medigraphic. RESULTS: A total of six papers met the selection criteria through the search in the primary sources. Five of them address the treatment of adduct CTE with the Ponseti method in patients with arthrogryposis, and one in patients with Moebius. Evidence levels and grades of recommendation of these papers were: IV-D (3), III-D (1) y II (B). CONCLUSIONS: The Ponseti method is an first-line treatment for arthrogryposis and Moebius syndrome. It is unexpensive, non-invasive and does not require a physician to perform it (however, it does require trained staff). Its use is recommended as it avoids extensive surgeries and medical complications that go beyond the hospitals economic possibilities.


ANTECEDENTES: El pie equino varo aducto congénito (PEVAC) es una malformación musculoesquelética común que afecta de uno a 4.5 de cada 1,000 nacidos vivos; se asocia de manera común a artrogriposis y síndrome de Moebius; éstos son más difíciles de tratar y requieren de tratamientos quirúrgicos agresivos para lograr un pie plantígrado; por lo tanto, ¿cuál es el nivel de evidencia y grado de recomendación del uso del método de Ponseti en el pie equino varo sindromático por artrogriposis y síndrome de Moebius? MÉTODOS: Estudio de diseño de revisión sistemática de acuerdo a las recomendaciones del grupo Cochrane por medio de la identificación de Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) y del método booleano para ubicar artículos que cumplieran con los criterios de selección mediante búsqueda de fuentes primarias como OVID, Cochrane, EBSCOhost, Elsevier, Medigraphic. RESULTADOS: En total, seis artículos cumplieron con los criterios de selección a través de la búsqueda de fuentes primarias: cinco de ellos sobre el tratamiento del PEVAC con método de Ponseti en pacientes con artrogriposis y uno para pacientes con Moebius. Se encontraron artículos con niveles de evidencia y grado de recomendación: IV-D (3), III-D (1) y II (B). CONCLUSIONES: El método de Ponseti es un tratamiento inicial en artrogriposis y síndrome de Moebius; es barato, no invasivo y no requiere de un médico para poderse realizar (pero sí un personal capacitado); se recomienda su uso para evitar cirugías extensas y complicaciones médicas que trascienden al orden económico intrahospitalario.

Melanopsin is the photopigment of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells that mediate non-visual responses to light. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze melanopsin gene expression in the rabbit retina at different ages and compare its expression with the prototypic gene of retinal ganglion cells (Thy-1 gene). Expression levels of OPN4, Thy-1, and GADPH genes were measured by real-time PCR at 3, 4, 8, 11, 12, 17, 19, 20, 23, 27, 32, and 47 postnatal days. We also regrouped the days before and after day 12 of life (pre-photic and post-photic stage, respectively). Average expression of the OPN4 gene between days was similar (P = 0.713), but was statistically different in the Thy-1 gene (P = 0.004). Also, no significant differences were found in OPN4 gene expression pre-photic and post-photic stage (P = 0.629); however, Thy-1 expression was higher in the pre-photic stage, almost double, than in the post-photic stage, with significant differences (P = 0.001). This is the first report describing OPN4 gene expression in the rabbit retina at different ages. We demonstrated that the OPN4 gene is constantly expressed at all early stages, even before the onset of photoentrainment by the pups and that Thy-1 and OPN4 gene expressions are out of phase.

BACKGROUND: Diets with increasing levels of energy were fed for 42 days to 200, 1-day old male broiler chickens to evaluate growth performance, carcass characteristics and chemical composition of meat. The study was performed in the subtropical area of northeastern Mexico. Treatments diets (T) for starter and finisher phases had apparent metabolizable energy (AME; kcal/kg) of: 2960 and 3040 (T1); 3000 and 3080 (T2); 3040 and 3120 (T3); 3080 and 3160 (T4), respectively. Within each of the growing phases the four treatment diets were formulated to contain similar levels of crude protein, amino acids, and other nutrients. In a completely randomized design, birds were allocated to the four treatments with five replicates (floor pens) of 10 birds each. The trial was divided in two phases (starter and finisher) of 21 days each (42 days total). RESULTS: Weight gain was not influenced by energy level; however, feed conversion efficiency was improved in the diets with 3040 and 3120 kcal/kg AME (T3; P < 0.05). There was no influence of treatment on total carcass weight or carcass cuts (P > 0.05). Meat from breast muscle had similar crude protein percentages among treatments; ether extract was higher in T1 than T4 (P < 0.05). The percentages of water, ether extract, ash and crude protein in thigh meat were not significantly different (P > 0.05) among treatments. CONCLUSIONS: For this study carried out in a dry tropical area, the moderate increase in dietary energy concentration (diet with 3040 and 3120 kcal/kg AME, T3) enhanced feed conversion efficiency of broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Sphingosine-1-phosphate plays vital roles in cardiomyocyte physiology, myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, and ischemic preconditioning. The function of the cardiomyocyte sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 1 (S1P1) in vivo is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cardiomyocyte-restricted deletion of S1P1 in mice (S1P1 (α) (MHCC) (re)) resulted in progressive cardiomyopathy, compromised response to dobutamine, and premature death. Isolated cardiomyocytes from S1P1 (α) (MHCC) (re) mice revealed reduced diastolic and systolic Ca(2+) concentrations that were secondary to reduced intracellular Na(+) and caused by suppressed activity of the sarcolemmal Na(+)/H(+) exchanger NHE-1 in the absence of S1P1. This scenario was successfully reproduced in wild-type cardiomyocytes by pharmacological inhibition of S1P1 or sphingosine kinases. Furthermore, Sarcomere shortening of S1P1 (α) (MHCC) (re) cardiomyocytes was intact, but sarcomere relaxation was attenuated and Ca(2+) sensitivity increased, respectively. This went along with reduced phosphorylation of regulatory myofilament proteins such as myosin light chain 2, myosin-binding protein C, and troponin I. In addition, S1P1 mediated the inhibitory effect of exogenous sphingosine-1-phosphate on ß-adrenergic-induced cardiomyocyte contractility by inhibiting the adenylate cyclase. Furthermore, ischemic precondtioning was abolished in S1P1 (α) (MHCC) (re) mice and was accompanied by defective Akt activation during preconditioning. CONCLUSIONS: Tonic S1P1 signaling by endogenous sphingosine-1-phosphate contributes to intracellular Ca(2+) homeostasis by maintaining basal NHE-1 activity and controls simultaneously myofibril Ca(2+) sensitivity through its inhibitory effect on adenylate cyclase. Cardioprotection by ischemic precondtioning depends on intact S1P1 signaling. These key findings on S1P1 functions in cardiac physiology may offer novel therapeutic approaches to cardiac diseases.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of pre-pregnancy diabetes mellitus (DM) on the population birth prevalence of congenital anomalies in Canada. METHODS: We carried out a population-based study of all women who delivered in Canadian hospitals (except those in the province of Quebec) between April 2002 and March 2013 and their live-born infants with a birth weight of 500 grams or more and/or a gestational age of 22 weeks or more. Pre-pregnancy type 1 or type 2 DM was identified using ICD-10 diagnostic codes. The association between DM and all congenital anomalies as well as specific congenital anomaly categories was estimated using adjusted odds ratios; the impact was calculated as a population attributable risk percent (PAR%). RESULTS: There were 118,892 infants with a congenital anomaly among 2,839,680 live births (41.9 per 1000). While the prevalence of any congenital anomaly declined from 50.7 per 1000 live births in 2002/03 to 41.5 per 1000 in 2012/13, the corresponding PAR% for a congenital anomaly related to pre-pregnancy DM rose from 0.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.4-0.8) to 1.2% (95% CI: 0.9-1.4). Specifically, the PAR% for congenital cardiovascular defects increased from 2.3% (95% CI: 1.7-2.9) to 4.2% (95% CI: 3.5-4.9) and for gastrointestinal defects from 0.8% (95% CI: 0.2-1.9) to 1.4% (95% CI: 0.7-2.6) over the study period. CONCLUSION: Although there has been a relative decline in the prevalence of congenital anomalies in Canada, the proportion of congenital anomalies due to maternal pre-pregnancy DM has increased. Enhancement of preconception care initiatives for women with DM is recommended.


TITRE: Influence du diabète antérieur à la grossesse sur les anomalies congénitales au Canada entre 2002 et 2012. OBJECTIF: Examiner l'influence du diabète antérieur à la grossesse sur la prévalence à la naissance des anomalies congénitales au Canada. MÉTHODOLOGIE: Nous avons réalisé une étude en population chez l'ensemble des femmes ayant accouché à l'hôpital au Canada (hors Québec) entre avril 2002 et mars 2013, ainsi que chez leurs enfants nés vivants ayant un poids à la naissance d'au moins 500 grammes ou un âge gestationnel d'au moins 22 semaines. On a attribué les codes de diagnostic de la CIM-10 au diabète de type 1 ou de type 2 antérieur à la grossesse. L'association entre le diabète et l'ensemble des anomalies congénitales ainsi qu'avec les diverses catégories prises séparément a été estimée à l'aide des rapports de cotes ajustés et son influence a été calculée sous forme de pourcentage de risque attribuable dans la population (%RAP). RÉSULTATS: Sur les 2 839 680 naissances vivantes, 118 892 nouveau-nés étaient atteints d'anomalies congénitales (41,9 pour 1 000). Même si la prévalence des anomalies congénitales est passée de 50,7 pour 1 000 naissances vivantes en 2002­2003 à 41,5 pour 1 000 en 2012­2013, le %RAP d'une anomalie congénitale liée au diabète antérieur à la grossesse est passé de 0,6 % (intervalle de confiance [IC] à 95 % : 0,4 à 0,8) à 1,2 % (IC à 95 % : 0,9 à 1,4). Plus précisément, le %RAP des cardiopathies congénitales est passé de 2,3 % (IC à 95 % : 1,7 à 2,9) à 4,2 % (IC à 95 % : 3,5 à 4,9) et celui des anomalies gastrointestinales de 0,8 % (IC à 95 % : 0,2 à 1,9) à 1,4 % (IC à 95 % : 0,7 à 2,6) au cours de la période étudiée. CONCLUSION: En dépit de la diminution relative de la prévalence des anomalies congénitales au Canada, la proportion d'anomalies congénitales pouvant être attribuées au diabète maternel antérieur à la grossesse a augmenté. On recommande l'amélioration des initiatives en matière de soins préconceptionnels destinées aux femmes diabétiques.

ABSTRACT

Congenital Anomalies in Canada 2013: A Perinatal Health Surveillance Report is the second national surveillance report from the Public Health Agency of Canada dedicated to congenital anomalies. It provides comprehensive data on congenital anomalies in Canada, focussing on 6 categories of congenital anomalies: Down syndrome, neural tube defects, congenital heart defects, orofacial clefts, limb deficiency defects and gastroschisis. The report presents national-level birth prevalence data and temporal trends, provincial and territorial estimates, and international comparisons. Known risk factors, prevalence-related impacts of prenatal diagnosis and preventative measures are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Anomalies congénitales au Canada 2013 : Rapport de surveillance sur la santé périnatale est le deuxième rapport national de surveillance des anomalies congénitales publié par l'Agence de la santé publique du Canada. Il dresse un portrait d'ensemble des anomalies congénitales au Canada en utilisant principalement six grandes catégories : le syndrome de Down, les anomalies du tube neural, les cardiopathies congénitales, les fentes labio-palatines, les malformations des membres et le gastroschisis. Le rapport fournit des données et des tendances à l'échelle nationale concernant la prévalence à la naissance, des estimations par province et par territoire et des comparaisons internationales. Sont également abordés les facteurs de risque connus, les effets du diagnostic prénatal sur la prévalence à la naissance et les mesures de prévention.

ABSTRACT

The Canadian Perinatal Surveillance System (CPSS) is a national health surveillance program of the Public Health Agency of Canada. The CPSS mandate is to monitor and report on key indicators of maternal, fetal and infant health. These indicators include both determinants and outcomes of perinatal health. Perinatal Health Indicators 2013 reports on 13 priority indicators using the most recent data from vital statistics, hospitalizations, the Canadian Community Health Survey and the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth.

OBJECTIVES: Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) have been used frequently as a model for human essential hypertension. However, both the SHR and its normotensive control, the Wistar Kyoto rat (WKY), consist of genetically different sublines. We tested the hypothesis that the pathophysiology of vascular remodeling in hypertension differs among rat sublines. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied mesenteric resistance arteries of WKY and SHR from three different sources, at 6 weeks and 5 months of age. Sublines of WKY and SHR showed differences in blood pressure, body weight, vascular remodeling, endothelial function, and vessel ultrastructure. Common features in small mesenteric arteries from SHR were an increase in wall thickness, wall-to-lumen ratio, and internal elastic lamina thickness. CONCLUSIONS: Endothelial dysfunction, vascular stiffening, and inward remodeling of small mesenteric arteries are not common features of hypertension, but are subline-dependent. Differences in genetic background associate with different types of vascular remodeling in hypertensive rats.

ABSTRACT

Bioactive compounds have become very important in the food and pharmaceutical markets leading research interests seeking efficient methods for extracting these bioactive substances. The objective of this research is to implement preparative scale obtention of mangiferin and lupeol from mango fruit (Mangifera indica L.) of autochthonous and Ataulfo varieties grown in Nayarit, using emerging extraction techniques. Five extraction techniques were evaluated: maceration, Soxhlet, sonication (UAE), microwave (MAE) and high hydrostatic pressures (HHP). Two maturity stages (physiological and consumption) as well as peel and fruit pulp were evaluated for preparative scale implementation. Peels from Ataulfo mango at consumption maturity stage can be considered as a source of mangiferin and lupeol using the UEA method as it improves extraction efficiency by increasing yield and shortening time.
