ABSTRACT

PIP: The metabolic effects of daily administration of 5 mg norethynodrel or 2 mg. chlormadinone acetate were studied on 6 women maintained on 80 mcg mestranol. Metabolic studies were made for 7 days on mestranol alone and for 3 weeks after the progestagen was given. In each case in which it was measured, body weight remained fairly constant but lean and fat body mass shifted toward a decrease in fat or a loss in body water or a real increase in high density components. There was a positive nitrogen balance and a more negative phosphorus balance when subject received the progestogen. When progestagen and estrogen were used there was more marked sodium retention than with estrogen alone.^ieng
