ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate visual performance after bilateral implantation of an extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: This multicenter, prospective, observational study included 100 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery with a toric or non-toric EDOF IOL (Tecnis Symfony), and 96 patients completed the final assessment at 4 to 6 months. Binocular corrected distance visual acuity and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), spectacle independence, visual symptoms, and patient satisfaction were evaluated. RESULTS: Mean decimal visual acuity results showed a binocular corrected distance visual acuity of 1.10 ± 0.18, UDVA of 1.04 ± 0.17, UIVA of 0.96 ± 0.16, and UNVA of 0.68 ± 0.18. Binocular UDVA and UIVA were 0.8 (decimal) or better in 98% and 94% of patients, respectively. Binocular UNVA was 0.63 (decimal) or better in 76% of patients. Overall, 76% of the patients achieved spectacle independence across all distances, and more than 85% reported no or mild dysphotoptic phenomena. On a scale of 0 to 10, the median patient satisfaction score was 9 for far, 9.5 for intermediate, and 8 for near vision. CONCLUSIONS: The Symfony EDOF IOL provided excellent distance, intermediate visual outcome, and functional near visual acuity. The visual results were associated with prominent levels of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study are to investigate the combined heat and mass transfer enhancement using binary nanofluids as a working fluid in a H2O/LiBr absorber. The result of heat and mass transfer experiment with the additives (arabicgum, 2E1H) showed that the heat and mass transfer performance of binary nanofluid with 2E1H enhanced significantly. In the case of 0.01 wt% Al2O3 binary nanofluids with 2E1H, the vapor absorption rate increased up to 77% in comparison with that without the additives. The heat transfer rate of 0.01 wt% Al2O3 binary nanofluids with 2E1H increased up to 19%. Based on the experimental results, it is recommended that the Al2O3 binary nanofluid be good with 2E1H to improve the heat and mass transfer performance.

ABSTRACT

The fluorescence properties of ofloxacin (OFL), norfloxacin (NOR) and flumequine (FLU) were studied in H2O-CH3OH and H2O-CH3CN mixed solvents because these solvents were thought to behave as a biological mimetic system. The emission spectra of OFL and NOR were very sensitive to the composition of the solvents. In the Lippert-Mataga analysis of the steady-state fluorescence data of OFL and NOR, clear reverse solvatochromism was exhibited in both mixed solvents. This observation can be explained by the twisted excited-state intramolecular charge transfer, which is accelerated by water. Theoretical treatments further support these results. The radiative and nonradiative rate constants were analyzed as a function of solvent dipolarity-polarizability (pi*) and hydrogen-bond donor acidity (alpha). These results were well consistent with the suggested mechanism of the excited-state chemical process of OFL and NOR, which depended upon the solvent-solute interactions such as bulk dielectric effects and specific hydrogen-bonding interactions. However, the influence of dielectric effects was more significant. The solvent structures of H2O-CH3CN and the preferential solvation by water were also examined. The emission spectra of FLU do not exhibit any characteristic responses to the properties of the environment.
